hey guys im new to the forum and after scanning over it it seems most people have the PC version but i got the PSX version and am wondering what all the wonders do and why it takes so long to build them in a small city and how do i get more sheilds

HI welcome.Ok so ya need som help alright(1)the reason it takes sooooooo long is because you dont have very many sheilds(you can try to speed-up production by buying the wonder very expensive)(2)Ah the question of the ages it all depends on your resource screen (i dont have psx version but am asumming it is the same as PC )You probaly want to make a fairly large city to get more sheild mess with the screen until your grtting in a lot of wheat and sheilds you can make a square produce more by sending out a settler to build roads, irrigation, ect(if your really new u can always automate your settler under the orders menu)Check your manuel for more detailed instructions on resource management or go to the civ2 site here im sure there's something there for you

Check out the War Academy. Go to A COOL PLACE and look under the Civ 2 section for the War Academy link. Some very good stuff there.

Cities need to produce shields in order to build things, obviously this includes wonders. The reason small cities have difficulty doing so quickly, is that they very rarely have good shield production, unless they are situated in ideal terrain with many resources around them. You can get more shields by modifying your city's terrain with settlers/engineers. Try Mining hills for starters. They will give you 1 food and 3 shields under most governments.

Oh, and build your coastal cities near whale tiles. Definitely the best early resource to utilize, as it provides shields, trade, and food.

yeah got that but im looking through thesse post and i seee 98 sheilds or more? and then special things to civilization advances like the lighthouse adding to ship distance

Oh and forest are good shield producer and all special tiles like wool or coal and rivers andhills and...

but how do you know if its a special tile, cuz i stated out asas the chineses and im stuck on this island all by myslef and i neeed to up my sheild produtcion so i can get off it

If you are brand new to the game, then you may just want to start a new game that won't be as hard for you to learn the basics. In this one, you would have to research map making in order to build triremes to get off the island, but be careful, they can sink if they don't end their turn adjacent to land.

Basically, grasslands (plain green squares) provide good amounts of food and may have a shield as well. Plains (yellowish squares) provide ok food and 1 shield. water (open water sqaures) provide one food and good trade. Forest (tree sqaures) provide 1 food and 2 shields. Hills (green bumby sqaure) only give one food, but you can mine it to add 3 shields to it. Mountains (big silver colored bumby sqaures) give on shield and can be mined for more shields also.

Basically 'special' resource sqaures are those that have some picture in them (examples are pheasant, silk, buffalo, whales, fish, coal, gold, wheat, oil, etc...)
These provide that same as the regular sqaures they are on, but give an added bonus depending on the type.

I don't know if the PSX version has the 'civlopedia' on it, but that can show you what all the terrain looks like and what they supply. It also has info about the wonders, governments, and things like railroads and trade.

The main thing is, you need to have enough food in your city to let the population grow, once it gets enough extra food, it will add a person to the city and that means another citizen to be working the fields. Once you get far enough in the game, you can add city improvements that improve the cities production.

Whew, that was a mouthful.

Sorry i didnt explain it any better but yeah the duke kind of summed it up settlers are the key to a great nation on the regular grass squares he was talkin about if you put a road on them and then irragate them they produce a lot more. get map making and find other civ and trade techs w/ them.

and remember it a game have fun and stay on for 24hour periods!

yeah thats what ive been doing except for when i built a trieme i went into a russian city to make contact like ground soldiers can and i attacked them and then did the same thing with the germans on accident. the russians, germans, greeks, and celts all signed a non-aggression pact together. what should i do?

the game is very addicting ill admit that but whats the use of building city walls if u already have great wall?

The great Wall will expire once someone discovers metallurgy. Once that happens *poof* all your city walls are gone.

So before someone discovers it, you should build city walls in the cities that need it so you don't have any turns without the extra protection.

Anytime one of your units tries to move into the square where a computer player is (unit or city) it is generally considered an attack. (except for diplomats and spies, which have other options). If the other comps have signed pact against you, then you can't be doing too bad.

They will do this once they consider you a threat. Be sure you are able to defend your self against their attacks, then start with one of them (the closest, weakest, whichever you decide) and go for them. If you give the computer enough time they will send tons of units after you (although so stupidly that you will soon learn how to kill them easily).

you seem to be doing good
smile.gif
what civ are you btw i usally dont build city wall sept in big citys and after gunpowder there virtualy useless

ok thanx but can i rebuild th wall once mettulargy has been discovered or is it useless to me. and i discovered a place with a mountain chain would that be a good place to build a city. it has water a tile away to so i can use that as food

prob but hills r usaly bettr rebuild (walls)if ya want im not tellin ya how to run your game or nothin i just dont hardly build them and what nation are you! make sure the city will be able to grow alittle and maybe u can make it acity devoted to shield production
smile.gif

Once metallurgy is discovered, the Great Wall is useless (It still adds points to your score though).

A mountain chain a good spot for a city?? Maybe having a city near a mountain chain is ok, so you can use it as a defensive barrier, but having a lot of mountains in the city radius will make it grow very slowly and it will never get very big.

BTW, did anyone show you the War Academy ? It has tons of info on the game.

im playing as the romans now i kinda messed up the chinese one so i started over and the muntain chain is on the coast and has 4 red and 6 gold mountains in the city radius plus threee whales.
