BOTM 10: Holy Roman Empire

It's arrived... this is the month when you get to find out whether deity BtS is as hard as deity vanilla or Warlords! Good luck... (you'll need it )

Game Details:

Game settings:
Civilization: Holy Roman Empire (Leader: Charlemagne; Traits: Protective and Imperialistic)
Rivals: 6 AIs
Difficulty: Deity
Map: Tectonics (60% water)
Mapsize: Standard
Climate: Cold
Starting Era: Ancient
Speed: Epic
Options: None.
Defeat Conditions: all enabled

Charlemagne:
Charlemagne is Protective and Imperialistic, and the Holy Romans start with mysticism and hunting. Protective gives free city garrison I and drill I promotions to archery and gunpowder units and double production speed of castles and walls. Imperialistic gives +100% great general emergence and 50% faster settler production.

Unique unit: Landesknecht (replaces pikeman)
The pikeman has a strength of 6 but gets +100% against mounted units. The landsknecht gets +100% against melee units too, meaning that, unlike pikemen, they can stand up to macemen. Both units require iron and engineering. Personally I think the landesknecht is pretty powerful for defending your stacks - but only if you can first prove your worth on deity by being able to build it before the AI has musketmen.

Unique building: Rathaus (replaces courthouse)
Like the courthouse, the rathaus gives +2 espionage points per turn and can turn one citizen into a spy. But where the courthouse only gives -50% maintenance, the rathaus gives -75%.

This is the start of the game (click for a bigger image):

Adventurer Class bonuses:
 1. Fishing: You start knowing fishing (just so your scout doesn't feel too isolated over there...)
 2. Overfishing We want to give you a helping hand at overfishing the clams. So you start with a workboat.
 3. Worker: You have a worker (sharing a tile with the settler).

Because of the difficulty level, we are relaxing adventurer eligibility: If you wish, you can play adventurer provided you have never won any Civ deity game before. Remember though that adventurer submissions are not eligible for any awards.

Challenger Class Equalisers:
 1. No techs: Guess what. Yep. Your people know nothing at all.

To Enter the Competition:

You can get the starting saves here. Use the same URL to submit your completed entry, which you must do by 15 October 2008.

Civ version

This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Warlords or vanilla Civ), patched to version 3.17. It must also be played with the HOF mod version 3.17.001. Note that for game security reasons this HOF mod version requires you to be logged in with an account that has admin privileges when you are playing for your game to be a valid entry to the GOTM competition. You'll see a warning dialog if you attempt to start a session without appropriate privileges.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

Sorry if this has been asked befor, but I spent over an hour searcing for the answer last night and I'm just not looking in the right places at all!

Ive got an error upon reloading Civ4 +HOF, for all 3 verisions, vanilla to bts:

"You must log in with an administrator account"

But er, im on XP with (I thought) only one account...the 'admin' one...?

windows.com is pretty funny to find answers from, it keeps suggesting A. Spyware B. Virus C. 3rd party app.

which pretty clearly reads to me: ITS NOT OUR FAULT!

(basically I can't play the Tokugawa or Charlie games; Stalin and Alex seemed ok..)

It may be worth your trying to explicitly create another account, give it administrator privileges, and then use that account. I have heard of reports of the built-in admin account having some issues in its setup on Vista, though I'd not heard anything about XP before.

(Though before trying all that, you should probably check the properties of the account you are running under at the moment to see if it really is an admin account).

The Alex game (WOTM 19) doesn't require admin privileges because it's using an older version of the HOF mod. I'm surprised you're claiming the Stalin game (BOTM 09) is behaving differently though. That uses exactly the same patch and HOF mod version as BOTM 10, so the two games should be identical in how they behave regarding the admin warning.

Ju st a thought. Is it possible that saves created with an admin account provide problems for normal users?

I know that I can rarely play XOTMs on my XP laptop, normal user, but they work fine on my Vista pc, admin user.

I don't think who created the save matters (And I was using the same account on my machine when I created the BOTM 09 and BOTM 10 saves).

The admin privileges are required by the latest HOF mods in order to be able to record some additional aspects of your session data that we use to help detect replaying.

Thanks, well my Stalin winning adventurer save was accepted. So I'll ignore and try :).

Or as an adventurer does that mean no points at all?

I was hoping my 'global' might still be affected by Adventurer saves?

On a quick check, it looks like you did have the appropriate permissions when you played your Stalin game. Can you think of anything you've changed in your Windows setup between completing that game and starting one that's giving you the warning?

Starting a game if you're getting the warning is risky. The warning is telling you that something in your windows setup is denying the HOF mod permission to take the action it needs to do to record session data. Carrying on risks having your game rejected.

Cheers, bummer coz the games going ok :)

I think I will do a reinstall, maybe even resummon windows, drastic but should do the trick!

I found my bts disk 2. Re-installed vanilla and Bts on C: drive. Civ4 patched itself, and then I installed the patch and the HoF mod for Bts.

I can load vanilla, but attempting to load Bts gives me a 'Fatal Error'. Failed initializing Python.

I had changed registry keys in my previous attempts to work the new patch, but the re-install seems to have reverted them to their default settings.

So... why the Python error?

I had the same problem some times ago. It seems you have problem with the registry.

Uninstall all once more, clean registry using special softvare like Absolut Uninstaller or Ccleaner or similar, install again vanilla and bts (do not change default directories!), install last patches and HOF modes. All mast be OK then.

PS you can clean registry using REGEDIT instruction (menu START->RUN->regedit) if you feel your own enough expirienced but in this case be ready to reinstall operating system.

Thanks! But, are you sure? The only thing I'd changed in the registry was which drive was indicated. I just re-installed, and those registry items are back to normal. I could be wrong of course, but I don't see how the registry can be the problem if it is as it should be

I remember an issue with gamecoredll files. I can't find that thread now... could that be it instead?

Don't mean to be a pest, but here's what regedit says about my registry settings:

InstallDIR C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4
InstallDIR C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword

The game is on the C: drive now, the registry points to the C: drive, and previously I had only changed registry settings to point to the D: drive in an attempt to get the new patch to work off the D: drive, with no luck.

EDIT: Wow! Quite an effort just to get started. Sorry I doubted you Gosha190, you had the right idea. Thanks to DS for pointing me to some more details on all this.
Here goes!
