We're all here to learn and have fun.

its all good. I just have lots of things to work on. Look at my SG for proof of that. I'm still not fast enough.

Its my new mantra...fasterfasterfaster...next time, no libraries!!! Just pointy things.

Hehe...
But take into consideration: it all depends on the circumstances. "Next time" libraries followed by a quick beeline to Cavalry may be faster than pointy things... :mischief:

My rule of thumb is: "the bigger the map and the higher the difficulty level, the more advanced weapons one needs for a fast military victory." Exactly where to draw the borderline, however, is a very tricky question. It's always interesting to make a comparison of the results, if in the same GOTM two experienced players tried different approaches. E.g. one sticked with horsemen, while the other one researched up to Knights. And even after the game it sometimes is not easy to determine, which approach was the better one. Things like luck with getting leaders, how close important wonders (like Temple of Artemis, Pyramids) get built by the AI, etc. may have a big influence on the game. And sometimes two different strategies may turn out to be about equivalent to each other. For example, in the recent Iroquois game GOTM144, templar_x stayed with Mounted Warriors until the end of the game, while I researched all the way up to Cavalry -- and we both finished in exactly the same turn... :crazyeye: Garvarg also used Cavalry and was three turns faster than us. Is this a "significant" difference? Or still within the boundaries of "luck factors"? Interesting question.

@Lanzelot

Good point. I am convinced it's a question of the right feeling resp. a kind of ingenous understanding of the whole game. That's why I'll always be best of the rest...

I agree. I seem to miss some game mechanic that the great players can tap into to keep up the tempo. I know I don't trade optimally, My initial worker use is good but I still make mistakes in the first 50 turns as far as tile improvement and tile usage. I can do an ok archer/horseman rush, but I can't figure out how to keep the momentum going after the first burst.

My mm skills are B/B- (somewhere around 80 out of 100), but that slips as the game wears on. I tend to focus on the 10 productive cities around my core/FP and neglect the rest.

Oh well. I'll be right behind you Cotta in the rankings.
