News: COTM57 Pre-Game Discussion

don't trade alphabet for anything, ever.

On the contrary. Trade or gift Alphabet around as soon as you can, so that the AI can research Mathematics for you. They generally won't go for Writing before they have gotten all first-tier techs anyway. (With the exception for Scandinavia, which will certainly research Writing).

Never ever trade Writing before the Sling-Shot appears to be safe.

On the contrary, sometimes you basically either get to trade Writing before finishing Code of Laws or you won't get anything for it.

At Monarch, the slingshot should be pretty safe. Even trading Writing is not out of the question, though it should be done with much aforethought. I wouldn't unless I was desperately behind. On Monarch with a decent start...unlikely. The one problem with this start is a small core, coastal starts are fine for 20K, but suck for other VCs. At some point, a Palace jump might be considered, at least for me.

This question was just answered in this thread. You research CoL yourself, then Philosophy. And don't forget to road all worked tiles and work the ones with the most commerce.

Wake up. It's not my question. If the answer isn't literature, say so.

Good morning, Stevie! This was your question, actually your two questions:

Question: I want to go for the republic slingshot. What to do after writing on this level? Researching COL on my own, or going directly to Philosophy and hoping that another civ can deliver me COL?

The answer is not Literature.

After a good deal of deliberation, I decided on Predator since the game is sub-Demigod...it shouldn't affect it too much, right?

The first COTM of the month I ever played was Iroquois, and Rome was right next door :( and horsies were far enough away that it was a pain in the ass to get to them :(

Are the Zulus 1-2-3? What a pain that would be. 2-3 bowmen..

Research for this would be wheel (to find the horses), then cry when there are none, then bronze working to fight off the hordes of barbs, THEN go for slingshot.

Can we get 5-2-1 Immortals next year?

Or how about 6-4-2 Conquistadores

PS: and Treading all terrain at cost of 1/9?

In the previous COTM using the boosted units, the Celts ended up very strong, extra movement seemed to be a big benefit to the AI. I still wonder if China had been on a continent how a 4 move Rider would have been like on the battlefield. Cooped up on an Island, they were no impact at all. IIRC, the Persians were in that game and were cultural lions, but the boosted Immos were not very different. I will have to start this soon just to see what Civ-Steve gave us.....

Indeed, boosted ATT is not too worrying, because in a boosted game just as in a normal game, we arrange for the AI's attackers to always fight on the defensive. Boosted MOV is more dangerous because it makes it harder to make that arrangement. And boosted DEF comes into play the most because we do have to kill most or all of the AI's defenders, and they still get to fight on the defensive.

Bah. Look at how ungrateful you are -- imagine if we had to play as Mongols. *ducks*

While I doubt the defensive penalty would have been doubled, I'm curious as to how the keshik would have been adjusted. Extra movement, perhaps? Or perhaps lowering the build cost to 50?
