Alright; I have come up for air (and temporarily reclaimed the family computer from the facebookers) to start the next COTM. It will be Spain! Monarch level Pangaea (but take note of the Predator challenges) and only 6 AI to contend with; should be very doable! Good Luck!

The saves are available >>here<< right now, Aug. 18th. You have roughly 1 1/2 months to finish this one.

Civilization: Spain
Rivals: 6
Barbarians: Roaming
Difficulty: Monarch
Land Form: Pangaea, 70% ocean, Standard map.
Geology:5 billion years old, Normal and Warm.
AI Aggression: Normal

Conquest-Class Bonuses:

  1. Free Pottery
    2 bonus Spearmen
    100 Free Gold

Open-Class Bonuses
Nothing!

Predator-Class Obstacles:

  1. Do not have Ceremonial Burial
    Galleys cost 35 shields
AI get +2 Free Unit Support, and +1 Unit Support per City

Hmm... settle in place, I guess. Maybe 20k... lots of mountains, but not much in terms of bonus resources. Still need to finish the GOTM though... (and this COTM will probably be the last I can do before semester starts again, if I can get around to it)

we are seafaring but do not start by the water, and still in the predator obstacles ("bonuses") we have more expensive galleys... :crazyeye:

As an HoF player I don't know how many maps with some cattle that I would throw away, because I had so many mountains near the starting site. Even if I had a grassland cow instead of say the plain square at the "4" spot from where the settler lies, I'd probably decline on playing this map out just on the basis of it not seeming to have enough shield potential.

From what I know of them, I agree that mountains can work out well for XOTM 20k games.

How good of a 20k site you have here depends in part on what sort of tiles you have in the squares you can't see. If we assume no food bonuses, then with this map it looks you have 8 mountains, 1 hill, 3 plains, 6 grassland available, and 1 deer plain available. I may speak mistakenly here, but the deer plain can give you 4 food in Repubilc when irrigated. 6 mined grassland give you 12 food. The 3 plains give you 6 food, and the hill 1. No food from the mountain. Taking into account the city center you have SUM(2, 4, 12, 6, 1, 1)=26 food if no other food bonuses lie around for SUM(1, 1, 6, 3, 1, 1)=13 squares. If I've gotten the deer right, the 11 flatland squares give you 1 shield each, the hill 3, and the mountain 3 also in a Republic. That makes for 17 shields at size 12. Using another mountain instead of a plains square yields 19 shields at size 12 with 24 food per turn for the city. The bonus grassland takes that up to 20 shields.

I may have made some mistakes there, I haven't checked it.

Thanks for the detailed analysis! I'd probably still play 20k if I have time for this, just because it's my favorite victory condition, though I'd be on the lookout for good non-capital sites as well.

I'll be wasting a couple of worker moves (and maybe settler moves) to look around first. Downstream would be a bit of a hike, but it might be worth it. At least with the mountains we'll be able to see well.
