I know this has been posted before but...I've read the various advice posted so far and nothing helps. There games runs smoothly but I still have black terrain. I have 1.52 and have run out of ideas. Pleae don't just tell me to buy a new video card though.

Thanks

Well if you don't want to listen to your own advice then I'll guess you'll have to make do with the black terrain. It's a video card issue, nothing else.

Gee, thanks for the spectacularly unhelpful advice. That simply isn't true. When I first installed Civ4 on my laptop it had the blk terrain issue and after some tinkering now doesn't. Did I change my video card - no I did not. I've followed the other threads which have dealt with this issue and correspondent seem to say that their video cards meet minimum specs.

Ok fine if you can't help but please try to avoid glib, smart alec responses.

I had the black terrain with a matrox dual monitor card. So I pulled it out and stuck in a radion 7100 card. Still black terrain. So I read the manual for the minimum requirements, pulled out the radion card (and returned it to the guy who lent it to me to try) and put in an old ge-force 4 that I had in another computer. wha-la! no more black terrain.

Also made a huge difference with one of the other games I play (C&C Generals, Zero Hour).

It also helps to ensure you are using the right driver for your card. You might check that as well.

im not so sure that this is a graphic card problem i have the latest ati driver 6.1 my system is a x800 xt pe graphics card 1 gig of ram and a 3 gig cpu so my pc meets the min specs with ease and i get this problem of black terrain sometimes. My graphics card is fine for every other game bf2 age of empires III need for speed most wanted ect.. however my main problem seems to be lack of memory forcing the game to crash.

All I can offer is that I had it on my laptop. I fixed it with, install XP SP2, install v1.52 and replace the video drivers. I actually used the Omega drivers (Radeon Omega Drivers 2.6.75a (Catalyst 5.10a)).
This fixed the black screen, but left me with horses, cows etc disappearing to only shadows. I haven't found a solution to that one yet.
