I have found that, pretty consistently, if I go to the "Trade Screen" for the civ who is attacking one of my CS allies, and ask them to make peace with that CS, they will. The only times that they won't make peace with my CS ally is when that CS has declared perma-war against that particular civ.

Ya, getting them to make peace is fairly simple, they do it on their own most of the time. Only once has the AI denied my request, and it was Alex whilst 'guarded' or 'hostile'

Many times, if they attacked unprovoked they'll do it again in 10 turns, and again, and again till all the CS are at perma war with them >_>
