I tried to play my first MP game tonight.

All I got was being kicked from all the non-password-protected games, and all my questions "can I play" were answered "no" even if there were many free places left.

I've played many other games in MP like Age of Mythology, Medal of Honor and many many others - but I've never experienced being rejected for no reason.

its all because they play ladder games. it pissed me off for the first half year when i wasnt part of the ladder league. i was so pissed off as i could only play with my 2 friends and thats it. finally i registered at www.myleague.com and i was allowed into the game. another thing to do which i wouldnt reccomend is to put ur sign in name as someone who is registered, this is considered bad however, but i gives them a kick in the nuts for kicking u out so many times.

This is easy, free, fun, and it allows you to join "Ladder" games. Which is what a majority of us who play civ online play.

There are lots of open games in the lobby. Just because someone doesnt host one right away doesnt mean it wont happen. Be patient.
Better still join the ladder. Nothing sucks more than playing a game for 2+ hours and then someone quits. In ladder, people do not quit. :)

And if you really need to play a game ASAP..host it yourself, it isnt rocket science :P

Hey rhye, great work on your mods
You'll see 2 kinds of games being hosted, open games and ladder games, dont join the ladder games unless u belong to the ladder as it is a league of dedicated players who report loss and wins etc. There are plenty of open games up join one of those if u r kicked from it maybe ur ping is high (no one likes a laggy game), most open games people quit when they lose interest or bad land etc so if u want a serious game join the ladder and you will have no problems getting a game.
Do not impersonate a ladder player as this is very frustrating for all involved in the game and can ruin the experience of honest ladder players. You suck for doing that juballs, of course youll get kicked out it says ladder doesnt it and you are not ladder what do you think will happen.

Don't play mutliplayers unless you know who you're going to play against ahead of time. This also gives you can insite into the kind of player you're going to be playing. Usually people are already going to play with certain people, so spots may not be left in their game. Anyway, that's what I've learned from my experience, after being rejected from a number of games ;).

As having the dubious honor for being the ... "original creator and grandfather of the ladder" http://civ3players.proboards2.com/index.cgi?board=PROFILE&action=display&num=1084221854 ...

let me explain a little about ladder games as they are getting a bad rep here.

First off, the reason for the ladder was because it is so difficult to get a game and a game that will continue to its conclusion.

In open mp games and I don't mean to insult the reputable people that do play them here, many open games collapse when someone gets tired, or is losing and they just leave. Very frustrating.

With the ladder games players are committed to play ... or they are penalized. The MP ladder game is cut throat total war and not for the faint hearted. Its not always the game I like to play but it is how MP play on the ladder has evolved for the maximum reports. There are various versions of games that are popular. Currently the FAD is Future (future scenario) CTON Games. A CTON is where alliances and trading are disallowed. If you like the true civ game ... building and democracy ... you can try an epic mp game but it is rare (honestly) that they play to conclusion.

I think if you want to play multiplay the ladder is still likely the best way of getting a game. Caution though, just because you join doesn't mean you will get acceptance right away. It takes effort and polite persistence to become of those recognized vets. Read more here about the players and there antics http://civ3players.proboards2.com/index.cgi

Note this weekend is the CCC tournament ... there will likely be nearly 200 people online fired up and verbally abusing each other.
