Hi all

After a few games on regent, i found it was too easy so ive started a new game on monarch... archi, 70% water as the english (i know, easy settings, but its first time at this level)

Things were going fine, after conquering my neighbour i secured the biggest single island for myself... and got a tech lead.

Then came steam power, great i thought!, i can railroad my land up which makes defence a doddle... and then discovered theres no coal on my island at all.

So i swapped maps with the ai and went hunting...and there doesnt seem to be any coal on the entire map??

Is this possible? I would have thought the game would ensure every resource was on the map?. I suppose its possible someone built a city on one of them?

Also at monach do the ai get combat bonuses?.

I was routing out an enemy city, held by 2 spearmen, i had cavalry and lost 4 veteran cavalry killing them...either they were 'super spearmen', or something strange was going on?

Thanks.

Generally, you will have about the same number of each strategic resources as their are civilizations on the map. The AI has been known to build cities directly on top of future resources, as I have seen that. The problem with coal is that it blends in so well if it is in the jungle or the mountains. I have also gone crazy looking for coal. It is probably in either jungle or mountains, you are just going to have to look very carefully. Also, check every island that could possibly have coal on it based on the terrain.

The "super spearman" is an issue that regularly comes up. Just wait until you loose a couple of tanks to them. In theory, the AI never receives any combat bonuses, but there are those that would differ on that.

Cheers timerover, ill take another look at the map, and as for the spearmen, well i guess ill be less lazy and use my artillery to soften them up next time-- i was sooo annoyed at the time though and its made me more reluctant to take over neighbours with better defences ;).

You can use a hot key to remove things from the map, so you can see the resources easier. IIRC it is cntrl-shift-M, N will let you set the view. Then you can see the coal, if it is under a town.

And Civ-Assist II will show you directly where a resource is, a feature I find incredibly helpful when cities have been built atop them, or when they hide out in tundra forests.

Hmm, next time I will defer to the Windows experts, since I use a Mac, which cannot run Civ-Assist II, and where the hot keys do not work. My apologies for commenting in the first place.

I set the clean map preferences up to hide everything except borders, resources and pollution, this is extremely useful without the need for other apps

I keep finding new uses for the clean map preferences: recently I hid everything but units and rivers to find out if I am attacking across a river, they are not always easy to see either.
