Civ 4 normally runs fine for me, but today it's aburptly stopped working. I haven't changed or updated any hardware or software.

When I load it up it runs fine for a minute or two, then suddenly the screen goes black, then I get the no input message from my monitor.

The only way to get my pc working again seems to be resetting it.

This happens every time I play.

Can anyone help me?

Use something like Speedfan and GPU-Z to check the temperatures of your CPU and Graphics card. It sounds like something is getting a little too hot. :)

Oh, you think this is the card/processor deliberately cutting out to protect itself?

If so, why would it only start yesterday? Every day in the past two weeks was hotter than yestersay. Could it have been triggered by some sort of dust buildup?

I'll get the monitoring software right away, thanks.

After installing the monitoring programs I loaded up Civ 4, only to find that it had changed from the globe background to the BtS background. I can't understand why.

I tried to change it back, but when I clicked on the background I wanted, it changed to it, but then immediately froze, the speakers making a constant loud note, the mouse not moving, the keyboard not responding.

So I didn't even get to load a game up.

your graphics driver is :old: - nay make that ancient ;)
it predates the release of the game.

Get a new one: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownlo...px?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.13&lang=English

this is for 32 bit windows xp - but I think its the right one for you.

Also for the love of your computer and all data on it: install XP service pack 3, security support for pre Service Pack 3 will be discontinued by microsoft next week.

W-wow, thanks!
I never know which drivers to get.

I didn't even realise I didn't have SP3. XD

Well, I've finished installing SP3 and that new driver, but I've got too much coursework to play Civ 4 now. XD
Still, hopefully it'll be fine when I do.

Thanks everyone, for all the help.

Edit: I've tested it out on a nice big map, through a full game, and there were no problems. :)
