"No longer able to work on Hanging Gardens"?

I have been trying to build wonders and I work on them for a while and then a note comes up and says "No longer able to work on Hanging Gardens"? or whatever I have been working on and switches me to something else. I have ten stone in my recourse box or whatever. I am very confused what is happening or why I am undable to produce these things. Can anyone help me?

Either another civ built them or you discovered the tech that them obsolete.

Even if it was obsolete he would still be able to complete construction, so the only possibility is that someone else has already built it. Obviously he missed the announcement of such.

Does such an announcement show up only when you have contact with the civ that builds a wonder?

no you can have no contacts at all but your advisor will pop up and say something like " we have information that [civ] finished [wonder]"
