Every time I check out the online game browser I seem to find it empty for some reason. I am playing the Steam version (on my iMAC and occasionally on my Aspire w/ Win7) and whether the servers are actually quite or something else isn't right, I don't know.

I can understand if the servers being quite having something to do with others being too engrossed in a single player game or just find hotseat and single player better looking with animations as opposed to both network MP modes offering none.

Does anyone actually play Civ5 over internet?

Well, for me I do play over the internet, but only play with my friends...so only host private games.

Correct, there's hundreds of games going at once, but most of us play privately.

Counter strike servers are fundamentally different from civ multiplayer games. Cs servers are hosted on dedicated servers. The only way you can personally host a cs game is to make your computer a dedicated server itself (there is a steam tool to do this). On the other hand civ hosted games are just run on a persons general bandwidth and are not servers at all (which is part of the reason why they are all so bad). So where as in private cs servers the only main difference is the need of a password, private civ games are quite literally private.

2K chose to make the games list regional and ping filtered. There are lots of games being played you just can't see them if they are not close to you. Steam does give us a way around this, they give us the ability to operate Steam group chat rooms were we can organize games. Just come visit the CivPlayers Steam chat lobby at www.civplayers.com and click on the Chatroom(steam req) link on the left side menu. And any player in the lobby will be glad to explain how games are setup.
