I am currently using the Americans on the Chieftain level, and am at ~1400AD....I was playing and playing and when I finally shut down for the night, I realized, that there has yet to be a war in the game. Not only have I not been involved in any wars, but other countries haven't even warred with each other...VERY strange...all of the civs are very close in their progress, with the Greeks holding a slight lead on me...but basically all the civs are the same size (i.e. land controlled/cities owned)...has anyone experienced this? I've played CivII thousands of times, and I'm usually in the thick of a war 10 turns in.

Yeah I have noticed this too. In my game there wasn't a war until the early industrial age. Once you get nationalism (mutual protection pact) things seem to heat up real fast :D.

I havent noticed this, it seems like I always get pulled into a war, and i really dont want to be in them. It usually happens to me when m y culture expands my borders to the edge of an enemys city. They get mad and attack.

Answer:

START THEM

I always find bribing other civs to war on eachother is great. You get to continue peaceful expansion while the admittedly quite vicious AIs tear eachother apart.

I also find the occasional Mongol blitzkrieg to be effective. In your case, I would target the Greeks, because they are doing slightly better than you. Gather an army, and send it at their capital, burning everything along the way. If you do it good, in the middle game, they will never recover, particularly as capital burning tends to result in a major loss of culture. You also get a few workers into the bargain.

This is good strategy only drawback is wars mean possible leaders, which means rushed wonders or armies which might not be good down the road.
