Nobles' Club 268: Victoria of England

I have read the spoilers for your other games, but I haven't finished my game (at Prince difficulty).

Spoiler 1340 AD T194 :

In 75 AD T118, my England is the largest civ in the game, and the only civ to know Currency or Philosophy. I have no state religion. One turn later, in 100 AD T119, Washington asks me to declare war against Mao Zedong. I say no. I like Washington, but I don't want to go to war with my weak army of Chariots and Warriors. I ruined a past game when I was too eager to join the AI's wars. Now I want to stay out of wars, settle more cities, and get more Workers.

Also in 100 AD T119, my Warrior maps the missing coast tiles north of Chehalis. After I end my turn, this Warrior survives an attack from a wounded barb Archer, and I get the trade connection past Chehalis to Zara Yaqob and Ragnar.

In 150 AD T121, I settle my 11th city of Standelf (south of Deephallow, to grab 2 furs and 1 iron). I notice on this turn that Darius I no longer wants Currency. I decide to sell Currency to other civs before they can would get it from Darius. I don't want to trade with Rangar (worst enemy of Washington) or Boudica (worst enemy of Saladin), but I will trade with Mao (other enemy of Washington). I had been selling techs for only gold, but Mao has only 10 gold, so I ask for more. Mao pays 10 gold plus Polytheism plus Priesthood plus Archery to get Currency. I take all the gold from Washington, Saladin, and Zara Yaqob. Now that I have Priesthood, I can see that most civs know Monotheism and Monarchy. I don't know them, because I got Representation from the Pyramids, so I didn't aim for Hereditary Rule from Monarchy. In 300 AD T127, as I sell Aesthetics to other civs, I take Monotheism from Mao and Monarchy from Saladin, then adopt both Caste System and Organized Religion. (I still have no state religion, but I can use Organized Religion to build missionaries.)

In 250 AD T125, Washington's Combat I Axeman is next to the barb city Chehalis. I want to conquer Chehalis before Washington does. I have my wounded Warrior and an Axeman by Chehalis. I promote my axe to City Raider I to check the chance. My axe has a 21.9% chance to slay the defending Archer and conquer Chehalis. I let Washington attack first. On the next turn, I don't see Washington's axe, and the barb Archer isn't wounded. I wait until I have 2 axes, then attack Chehalis in 325 AD T128. My axe loses the 21.9%, but my 2nd City Raider axe wins the 96.1%.

2021-01-28.png

Chehalis becomes my 12th city. It has no buildings, so I begin a Granary. After I build roads, Chehalis might add wheat and wine to my network. I can't import resources (for now; I later import dye). In 425 AD T132, I begin selling resources to civs, as I sell a sheep to Darius for 2 gold per turn, and a rice to Washington for 2 gold per turn. I was giving the rice to Washington, but I cancel the deal so I can sell the rice. I have no other resource deals in 425 AD T132; I stopped giving a pig to Saladin centuries ago when a barb pillaged the pig.

In 500 AD T135, I win the race to Music's Great Artist. I was slow to Music because I didn't get Aesthetics until after Philosophy, but the AI civs were slower. Also in 500 AD, I settle my 13th city of Needlehole (on the coast north of Chehalis). I move Miles Davis (Great Artist) out of Camelot to settle him in Stock. I don't want a golden age this early, because my cities are small and don't work many tiles. My cities are growing because I know Calendar and am connecting more resources. If I run 20% science in 500 AD, I would lose 3 gold per turn. This should get better as my Workers improve tiles and I build a few Courthouses. I continue to alternate between 0% and 100% science. My research isn't stuck because I have scientist specialists. When my cities run out of good tiles, the citizens become scientists. Representation (from the Pyramids) adds extra science to my specialists. I have enabled scientists by adopting Caste System, and before that, by building Libraries for culture.

In 620 AD T141, I accept Washington's offer of Metal Casting, and Saladin's offer to declare war against Boudica. The war will be nominal: Boudica is too far away. Saladin has (at least 2 times) retaken Medina from Boudica. Boudica's Celtic army would need to cross Darius's Persia, then Saladin's Arabia, before attacking me. Boudica has no coastal city. Boudica soon makes peace with Saladin. I have a few Axemen, Chariots, and Spearmen on defense.

I complete some world wonders: Angkor Wat in Bywater in 640 AD T142, the Great Library in Camelot in 800 AD T150, my national Moai Statues in Stock in 820 AD T151, the Sistine Chapel in Bywater 940 AD T157, the Mausoleum of Mausolos in Camelot in 1080 AD T168, the Spiral Minaret in Bywater in 1170 AD T177, the extremely late Great Lighthouse in Stock in 1170 AD T177, and the Kong Miao in Bywater in 1200 AD T180. I lose Notre Dame to Washington and the Hagia Sophia to Boudica. I settle my 14th city of Pincup (south of Camelot, near my iron mine) in 920 AD T156, my 15th city of Nobottle (between Chehalis, Overhill, and Waymoot) in 1030 AD T163, and my 16th city of Woodhall in 1120 AD T172. I learn Divine Right and found Islam in Pincup in 1000 AD T160.

I begin in 680 AD T144 to add Buddhism to cities with my own missionaries. Mao Zedong completes a Jewish Apostolic Palace in 740 AD. My civ doesn't have Judaism. When religions spread without a missionary, I never got Judaism, but usually got my own Confucianism. (I had expected a Jewish AP from Mao or Ragnar; they both got Theology. In some games, the civ who founds Christianity completed the AP; but in this game, Ragnar founded Christianity and Mao completed the AP.)

2021-01-29.png

Ragnar in 960 AD T158 says, "I'm making you an offer you can't refuse." He offers only 5 gold to buy Calendar, so I do refuse. I have previously refused to help Ragnar, refused to join his war against Washington, and refused to adopt Hereditary Rule.

Ragnar declares war against me in 1030 AD. I had feared such an attack and kept some units in my northwestern cities nearest Ragnar, but I don't have enough units. My reply in 1040 AD T164 is to exit Caste System and adopt Vassalage and Slavery. Anarchy takes 2 turns. My slavers hurry a Maceman in Needlehole just before that city falls to Ragnar in 1070 AD. I lose 4 units (Maceman, Spearman, Warrior, Axeman) and slay 1 Berserker.

I have the largest civ. I rank 1st in all of crop yield, production, and gold. My Workers build roads toward Needlehole and chop forests. I get angry citizens (because Washington annexed my winery west of Chehalis as the war began), but the anger disappears as I whip my slaves and shrink my cities. I settle Woodhall and complete the Mausoleum of Mausolos, the Spiral Minaret, and the Great Lighthouse during the war. Most cities produce Barracks, Macemen, Pikemen, and Trebuchets. Ragnar's attack on Chehalis fails as my new Macemen reach the front. I get Pachacuti (Great General), who leads a Medic III Chariot.

2021-01-29 (1).png

How did I get the Great Lighthouse in 1170 AD T177? In NC267 Montezuma, I had completed the Great Lighthouse in 400 BC T99, and other players completed it earlier. In this game, everyone forgot to build it. You can build it only on the coast, but all civs started this game away from the coast. Washington and Boudica never got coastal cities! Ragnar and Saladin each got 1 coastal city. Mao got 2. Zara Yaqob and Darius I each got 3. I got 4. Some coastal cities are small and weak. Darius's Angle is a large coastal city, but might be too distracted by wars. I suspect that Angle was a barb city until Darius took it. Angle is now on the front of Darius's war against Boudica.

I win the Liberalism race in 1210 AD T181 and take Nationalism as my free tech. (Astronomy costs more bulbs, but Nationalism helps the war.) I attack Needlehole in 1220 AD T182, with 5 Trebuchets and then mostly with Macemen; I lose a Maceman and slay 10 units. I retake Needhole in 1230 AD T183. My maces, pikes, trebs, medic invade Vikingland; conquer Bjørgvin (my 17th city) in 1290 AD T189, Birka (18th) in 1330 AD T193. These 2 cities are on hills but have only 20% defense, so they fall quickly. In past games, when I attacked cities with maces, I stopped to bombard each city's wall or castle with Catapults. In this game, I have enough Trebuchets to bombard the 20% and attack units on the same turn.

After Birka falls, in 1330 AD, Ragnar becomes a vassal of Zara Yaqob, who joins the war on Ragnar's side. This act of the Zara surprises me. In past games, I have seen a civ capitulate to an enemy during war, or become a vassal during peace, but I have never seen a civ gain a war ally by becoming a vassal, as Ragnar now gains the Zara. (I feared something else: if the Apostolic Palace would declare war, then both the Zara and Mao would join. Now the Zara has joined, but Mao is still out.) This act of the Zara will slow my invasion of Vikingland, because I will split my army.

2021-01-30.png

Some units will stay in Birka to defend against the Zara. Other units will go west from Bjørgvin to continue attacking Ragnar. I have a road from Needlehole to Bjørgvin and Birka because I brought 2 Workers with my army. Now in 1340 AD T194, I have 8 Macemen, 3 Pikemen, and the Medic III Chariot defending Birka.

The problem is that the Zara knows Guilds and can build Knights. If he has enough Knights, along with some Catapults and Trebuchets, then he will slay my stack in Birka. I have no Knights, but I am 1 turn away from learning Military Tradition to unlock the Cuirassier, who is stronger than the Knight. I want to take the turn, then change civics. I want to exit Vassalage, Slavery, and Organized Religion; I want to adopt Nationhood, Caste System, Mercantilism, and Theocracy. I might also convert from no state religion to Buddhism. The anarchy will delay my Cuirassiers, but Nationhood should allow me to draft Musketmen, so I might have enough units to fight both Ragnar and the Zara.

I still fear the Jewish Apostolic Palace. Mao is the AP resident, but the Zara would become the resident if Ragnar votes for the Zara. As long as I hold Birka, a Jewish city, then the AP might not declare war, but the AP might stop the war and return Birka to Ragnar. I might defy an AP resolution so I can continue the war. I have never defied the Apostolic Palace in any game, and I don't know whether the penalty for defiance would ruin this game.

Prince Diplomatic Victory via the United Nations in 1939 AD T359.
Normalized score = 35164

This is by far my highest score ever. (My previous best was 12752 from a Monarch Cultural Victory.)

Spoiler 1816 AD T278, the 1st big war :

In the northwest of the world is Ragnar's Vikingland. Back in 300 BC T103, Ragnar declared war against Washington and sent his axes, chariots, and spears south to die at the walls of New York. That was his big mistake. If his army went southwest, he would have conquered the barb city of Chehalis. He left Chehalis for me. I took it in 325 AD T128. I became the largest civ on the map. Ragnar declared war against me in 1030 AD, but it was too late. Ragnar held my city of Needlehole from 1070 AD to 1230 AD, then lost his own cities of Bjørgvin and Birka. In 1330 AD, Zara Yaqob accepted Ragnar as a vassal and joined the war against me. This might be a wise move, if it is the Zara's last chance to stop my victory.

I flip the turn to 1350 AD T195 and learn Military Tradition. Leonard Nimoy quotes Sun Tzu, "Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win." The defeated warriors now belong to Zara Yaqob, who went to war first, then sought to win the city Birka from me. In 1340 AD, the Zara sacrifices a Chariot, a Maceman, and a Knight in failed attacks. The Zara's stack of Knights and Trebuchets don't arrive until later.

2021-02-03.png

In 1350 AD, I have a monopoly on Military Tradition, Liberalism, and Gunpowder. The Zara, Darius, and Saladin want these 3 techs. Washington wants these 3 plus Banking. I should watch Ragnar, the Zara, and Saladin, because they have Printing Press and might get Replaceable Parts and Rifling.

Mao and Ragnar are missing Nationalism (before Military Tradition). Ragnar is also missing Education (before Liberalism) and Guilds (with Education or Guilds before Gunpowder). Boudica is missing Paper (before Education). I go ahead and sell Banking to Washington to grab his 50 gold (and his world map again). Still in 1350 AD, I convert from no state religion to Buddhism. I have Buddhism in 13 of my 18 cities. Buddhism is also good for diplomacy; Washington and Saladin have Buddhist civs, and Darius has Free Religion. Mao won't like my Buddhism, but Mao is already Annoyed toward me.

In 1360 AD T196, I change civics. I exit Vassalage and Slavery.

2021-02-03 (1).png

I change 4 of 5 columns by adopting Nationhood, Caste System, Mercantilism, and Theocracy. I stay in Represention. I don't adopt Police State (though it would boost my production of war units) because the extra beakers from Representation are too good. In a previous game, I had the Pyramids and switched from Representation to Police State during a war, but then I was slow to research Macemen. In this game, the Buddhist conversion plus the civic change cost 4 turns of anarchy. I exit anarchy in 1390 AD T199 and immediately begin to draft Musketmen (using Nationhood).

I resume my invasion of Ragnar's Vikingland. I conquer Uppsala (my 19th city) in 1420 AD T202. Ragnar retakes Uppsala in 1460 AD, but I retake it in 1470 AD T207. (Also in 1470 AD, Mao declares war against Darius.) The Apostolic Palace proposes in 1480 AD T208 to stop the war against Zara Yaqob (who controls the AP). I believe that the resolution would stop all wars between civs with Judaism, but I want to continue the war against Ragnar. I defy the resolution. "Stop the fighting among our brothers in faith. Fails! (256 Votes - Required 163 of 264)." The penalty is less than I fear. It is +5 unhappy, but only in Jewish cities. That's only Birka and Uppsala.

I conquer Ragnar's capital of Nidaros (20th) in 1520 AD T214.

2021-02-04.png

Still in 1520 AD, I take 35 gold from Boudica to end my nominal war against her. Saladin had brought me into the war back in 620 AD T141, and I stayed in the war after Saladin made peace and Darius declared war on Boudica; but my only combat against Boudica was to lose my Warrior (out scouting Darius's Persia). I end the war after Darius made peace. The active wars are between Darius and Mao, and between me and Ragnar with the Zara.

I complete 2 more wonders in Stock: the extremely late Colossus in 1520 AD T216, and then the Dai Miao in 1540 AD T218. I conquer Haithabu (21st) in 1580 AD T226, after slowly bombarding it with only 4 Trebuchets. Haithabu is the Jewish and Christian holy city, but has no holy shrines. Meanwhile, the Zara brings stacks of Knights and Trebuchets against Birka, but I hold Birka, because my Cuirassiers tend to slay the Zara's Knights. (This might be the first game where I use Cuirassiers. In past games, I got Rifling before Military Tradition and skipped Cuirassier by jumping from Knight to Cavalry.)

I learn Rifling in 1585 AD T227. The game is effectively over. I begin to draft my unique unit, the Redcoat. I had learned Steel (for Cannons) before Rifling. My new Cannons and Redcoats arrive near Birka. I leave Ragnar with his last city and invade Ethiopia. So fall the Zara's cities: Adulis (22nd) in 1610 AD T232, Addis Abada (23rd) in 1640 AD T238, Matara (24th) in 1665 AD T243, Gondar (25th) in 1675 AD T245.

Whenever the turn ends in 8, the Apostolic Palace tries to stop the war, and I defy. Turn 208, defy. Turn 218, defy. Turn 228, defy. Turn 238, defy. (The penalty for defiance peaks at +15 unhappy in Birka, which is 3 stacked penalties. I don't see +20.) Turn 248, vote for Mao, who retakes the residency from Zara Yaqob. In 1710 AD T252, complete the Temple of Solomon in the Jewish holy city Haithabu; it yields 15 gold per turn.

I had joined my friends' wars against Boudica and Mao; in 1710 AD Boudica conquers Matara from me. The Zara begins to build Cuirassiers, but I have a mix of Cuirassiers and Cavalry. Boudica has more units in larger stacks, but her strongest units are Knights. I conquer the Zara's capital Aksum (25th) in 1715 AD T253.

2021-02-05.png

I conquer Debre Berham (26th) in 1720 AD, T254, then summon the Zara for peace talks.

2021-02-05 (1).png

I want him to capitulate, but, "We are afraid of your enemies." I accept the Zara's wise offer of 3 gold per turn and the city Yeha (27th). The peace also includes Zara's vassal Ragnar. (One turn later, Ragnar breaks free from the Zara and becomes a vassal of Saladin.) I have no defenders in Yeha, but the city lost its Ethiopian culture and became 100% English, so I can draft Redcoats in Yeha. I draft 3 Redcoats over 3 turns, and they successfully defend the city by slaying Boudica's attacking stack.

Boudica and I chase each others' units. In 1725 AD Boudica takes Aksum from me. In 1730 AD T256, I take Matara (27th). Turn 258 is the AP vote. I expected Mao to stop the war, but he instead proposes to return Gondar from me to the Zara. I vote yes, because I want to remove the penalty of defiance from my Jewish cities. Gondar had expanded borders 3 times, and its return cuts my access to Debre Barhan (northwest of Gondar) and Aksum (northeast). I regain access by opening borders with the Zara.

Aksum is stuck between Gondar and Lalibela. Boudica liberates Aksum to the Zara in 1745 AD, but I proceed to attack Aksum, where I slay Boudica's stack. I summon Boudica for peace talks.

2021-02-05 (2).png

She pays 140 gold, plus 8 gold per turn, to exit the war. My last opponent is Mao, who is also at war against Darius and Washington. In 1790 AD T268, I conquer Xian (27th). In 1802 AD, Mao attacks my stack trying to advance from Xian to Guangzhou. The turn 268 resolution was to stop trading with Darius. I vote no, but it passes. The turn 278 resolution is to stop the war. I summon Mao on turn 278 for peace talks.

2021-02-06.png

This deal isn't so good: Mao's map, 10 gold, plus 10 gold per turn. (I expect Mao to cancel the gold per turn after 10 turns, as the Zara and Boudica did.) I can't get Guangzhou in the deal because I have bombarded Guangzhou, but would need one more turn to attack its defenders. I take the deal because I would get nothing if the Apostolic Palace stops the wars. I get surprised in turn 279 when the resolution fails. A majority voted yes, but the resolution needs 231 of 374 votes to pass; my 165 no votes are enough to fail resolutions. I guess that I should have continued the war and attacked Guangzhou.

Spoiler 1914 AD T344, the 2nd big war :

The war is over! I noticed during the war that Washington is trying for a Cultural Victory. I want to win the Cultural Victory before Washington. I have a good chance if I build more wonders and spread more religions. I got Buddhism from Saladin, founded 3 religions, and got the other 3 religions from Ragnar's cities, so I have all 7 religions. Washington has only Buddhism and Confucianism.

I had crashed my economy during the war. As I approached Ragnar's capital Nidaros, I had almost 0 income at 0% science, because city maintenance was too high. I switched the production in many cities from military units to Buddhist Temples and Courthouses. I like a Courthouse to reduce city maintenance. I like a Buddhist Temple because it yields 2 gold (with the Spiral Minaret) plus 6 culture (with the Sistine Chapel), and allows a priest specialist (2 hammers with Angkor Wat). As I invaded Ethiopia, my economy crashed again, and my cities became unhappy (from the war, or from lack of Emancipation). I switched some cities to Wealth, and I gradually raised my culture rate from 0% to 40% to get 4 fewer angry citizens in each city. The peace treaty with Ethiopia fixed most of the unhappiness; my culture rate went down from 40% to 0% and back up to 20% in 1816 AD.

I start my 1st golden age in 1750 AD T260 with the Great Spy from Communism, and extend it with a Great Scientist and a Great Prophet. This golden age lasts 24 turns (with help from the Mausoleum of Mausolos). During this golden age, I switch from Theocracy back to Organized Religion so I can spread religions. My invasion of Mao's China happens during this golden age. As soon as I get the peace treaty with Mao in 1816 AD T278, I draft 3 more Redcoats and switch from Nationhood to Free Speech for more culture.

The goal of a Cultural Victory is 3 cities at 50000 culture. In 1816 AD,
  • Washington has Washington 9028, Philadelphia 6792, New York 5190.
  • I have Camelot 7737, Bywater 7309, Stock 5053.
My priorities are to research techs, to build wonders, and to spread religion. After I got Rifling, I researched Steam Power. Most of my cities are on rivers and built Levees. I now run from Electricity to Mass Media to unlock wonders. My economy combines Representation, Caste System, and Mercantalism to speed up research. Mercanatlism adds a specialist to each city. Representation adds science to each specialist. Caste System unlocks special scientists without a Library, and special artists without a Theatre.

Most of my cities are producing Wealth, missionaries, or temples. The production of Wealth increases my science rate. I had a Cultural Victory in a previous game where my cities didn't produce Wealth until after they completed several city buildings. In this game, I am producing fewer buildings (with help from Caste System) and more Wealth.

With the higher science rate, I continue to win races to techs. I had won Confucianism from Code of Laws, Taoism from Philosophy, the Great Artist from Music, Islam from Divine Right, and the free tech from Liberalism. I didn't get the Great Merchant from Economics, but I did get the Great Spy from Communism and the Great Scientist from Physics. I have stopped selling techs to other civs; I don't want them to have techs and build wonders.

I use 3 great people (merchant, prophet, scientist) to launch my last golden age in 1838 AD T289. I win the Great General from Fascism. 2 turns later, in 1842 AD T291, I join Saladin's war against Zara Yaqob. I'm in a golden age, so I easily switch back to Nationhood and Theocracy, then begin to draft Infantry. 13 of my 27 cities switch to producing military. I also raise my culture rate from 20% to 40%. (I go back to 20% after I complete the Eiffel Tower.)

I had seen Saladin's stack near Yeha one turn earlier, so I knew that I not fight alone in this war. Saladin has approached Qohaito (southeast of Yeha) with a large stack of Riflemen, Cavalry, and Cannons. My smaller stack is coming from Xian to attack Lalibela (northeast of Yeha). Ethiopia also builds Riflemen, Cavalry, and Cannons, but their army is too small, and the Zara has no more than 4 cities.

2021-02-06 (1).png

Saladin easily takes Qohaito. I lose Debre Barhan (on the wrong side of Gondar) to the Zara in 1848 AD, but conquer Lalibela (27th) in 1850 AD T295. The Zara becomes a vassal of Mao in 1850 AD, so Mao joins the war. Saladin's stack moves from Qohaito toward Mao, and I build a railroad to move some units toward Mao. I conquer Aksum (28th) in 1864 AD T302, Gondar (29th) 1868 AD T304, and finally retake Debre Barhan (30th) in 1878 AD T309 to end the Ethiopian civ and remove its culture. The fall of Ethiopia is my revenge for having lost the race to Stonehenge at the beginning of this game, because I now hold the obsolete Stonehenge in Aksum.

Over in China, Saladin has taken Guangzhou, which remains surrounded by Chinese culture. I invade along the coast and conquer Harappan (31st) from Mao in 1882 AD T311. Mao retakes Guangzhou in 1882 AD, but I go inland and take Guangzhou (32nd) in 1894 AD T317. I continue along the coast and conquer Cherokee (33rd) in 1906 AD T326 and Hangzhou (34th) in 1914 AD T334.

I complete the United Nations in 1902 AD T322. I win the Secretary-General election with 508 votes. I get votes from myself and Saladin. Washington gets votes from Ragnar and Darius. Mao and Boudica abstain. I can't reach the 543 votes for a Diplomatic Victory. My UN resolutions are the global currency in turn 328, and the global civic Environmentalism in turn 334; everyone votes for both. The Apostolic Palace becomes vacant; the AP elections of turns 298, 308, 318, and 328 fail to pick a resident, because no candidate has enough votes after I refuse to vote for my enemies, Zara Yaqob and Mao Zedong.

I exit the war in 1914 AD T334 as I slay all but 1 unit in Hangzhou, then summon Mao to peace talks.

2021-02-07.png

Mao wants to capitulate. He has made peace with Saladin, but Washington has attacked Mao and conquered his capital Beijing, so Mao wants my protection from Washington. I refuse his capitulation and ask for the city Hangzhou in a peace treaty. Mao refuses to give Hangzhou, so I slay its last unit and conquer it. Then Mao gives his map and gold for peace. As a result, I have the 3 Chinese coastal cities (Hangzhou, Cherokee, Harappan) plus Guangzhou. I also have Xian from the earlier war.

2021-02-07 (1).png

The Middlesea is now almost an English lake: I rule all but 4 coastal cities. Boudica has the coastal city of Angle (taken from Darius); Darius has Bactra; Saladin has Najrin and Qohaito, but my culture from Yeha and Xian has surrounded Qohaito, and my culture from Stock is pushing Najrin.

Spoiler 1939 AD T359, Prince Diplomatic Victory :

I set 100% culture rate in 1905 AD T325, before the end of the war. I use Cristo Redentor to exit Nationhood and Theocracy and return to Free Speech and Organized Religion. When my own UN revolution switches me from Mercantilism to Environmentalism, I also switch from Representation to Universal Suffrage. I build wonders in my 3 best cities of Washington, Bywater, and Stock. I lose the Pentagon to Saladin, and I never had a chance at the Statue of Liberty (also won by Saladin), but I complete almost every other wonder in the game. My new priority is to add temples and cathedrals to my 3 best cities.

The Apostolic Palace, after 40 turns of vacancy, gets a resident in turn 338, as I vote for Washington, who now rules Beijing, the AP site. I join Darius's war against Boudica, but exit the war with my UN resolution of turn 340. The 2nd UN sec-gen election is on turn 352; I win with 610 of 959 votes; I get votes from myself and Saladin; Boudica abstains; everyone else votes for Washington. I notice that a Diplomatic Victory is only 594 votes.

In 1938 AD T358, I propose my Diplomatic Victory. The question is whether Saladin will vote for me, and whether Saladin's vote will be enough.

I am racing ahead of Washington to a Cultural Victory...

2021-02-07 (2).png

I am 29 turns away from my Cultural Victory, when Stock would reach 50000 culture...

2021-02-07 (4).png

Saladin votes for me! I win the game! It is 1939 AD 359.

2021-02-07 (5).png

Washington is the other candidate. Ragnar had changed masters at least 3 times (from the Zara to Saladin to Boudica to Washington), but Ragnar is now a vassal of Washington, so Ragnar votes for Washington. Mao had capitulated to and votes for Washington. Darius chooses Washington over me. (Darius might remember that I cut trade with him in T268, because of the Apostolic Palace.) Boudica abstains. I win with votes from only myself and Saladin.

This is my 3rd victory in Civilization IV (not counting the tutorial). My other 2 wins were cultural, and this game would have been another Cultural Victory, but Saladin ends the game early by voting for me to win. Saladin likes how I share his state religion, Buddhism, and how I joined his war against the Zara and Mao.

I look at the Crop Yield graph for the last 200 turns. The white line on top of the graph is my crop yield.

Ragnar has the purple line on the bottom. Ragnar declared war against me in 1030 AD, near the left side of the graph. On the power graph, Ragnar and I were about equal in 1030 AD, but here, my crop yield is more than double Ragnar's. This is why I won the game. Crops feed people, and people make hammers and beakers to win wars. I had settled too many cities and annexed too much land before 1030 AD. Ragnar's attack was too late. My civ was too big, so I produced the larger army and won the war. In other games, I am rarely 1st in crop yield, so I have more trouble in wars.

My statistics for buildings look strange, because I completed fewer buildings than usual.

I built fewer Markets and Grocers than usual. In other games, I would build Markets and Grocers in most of my cities (because Markets and Grocers increase gold, so I can have a higher science rate). In this game, I built only 4 Markets and 6 Grocers. I got more gold from selling techs or resources to other civs. (I almost never sold techs or resources in previous games.) I also looted gold in wars; I didn't build a Market when I wanted another Cannon or Cuirassier for more loot. I also produced Wealth in some cities.

I also built fewer Forges and Libraries. My typical city in another game has a Granary for food, a Library for culture, and a Forge for hammers. In this game, I had so much land, I needed more Settlers, Workers, and army units, so I had fewer hammers for Libraries. I also made the strange decision to switch from Slavery to Caste System. With Caste System, I don't need a Library to unlock scientist specialists. In other games, I would stay with Slavery and whip the slaves for more Libraries. In this game, I built 20 Levees and only 11 Forges. This is strange, because this map has many rivers (to allows Levees), and because in other games, my cities tend to complete Forges before I get Steam Power for Levees.

I also built only 1 Buddhist Monastery and no other monasteries. I like to build monasteries for culture and science, but in this game, I quickly reached Scientific Method, so monasteries went obsolete. I used my Buddhist Monastery to continue spreading my state religion during Theocracy. I did build more temples than usual. I liked the Buddhist Temple (of my state religion, for extra culture from my Sistine Chapel) and the Jewish Temple (for extra hammers from Mao's Apostolic Palace, after I stopped defying the AP), but I had a mix of cities with different religions, so I built any available temple for culture and happiness. Later, I wanted temples to unlock cathedrals in my 3 best culture cities.

I made some late mistakes. For example, my 3 best culture cities wasted some hammers on wonders with no culture (like the United Nations). The mistakes weren't important, because I was so far ahead of the other civs.
