Non Cultural borders.

New to these forums so don't know if this has been suggested before or if there is a Mod that implements this...

But I've always found that when I am playing CIV the thing I would most like to see would be the ability to "claim" territory regardless of cultural borders.

For instance when the nessecary technologies have been invented to allow maps to be traded why not allow the CIVS to draw their own borders? This could allow for more diplomacy options surrounding border disputes and the like.

Thoughts?
 
Good idea! I was considering some oother previous civ games features would allow this idea applicable! For example, coordinates! If Civ 4 had (x, y) coordinates, the concept of non cultural borders would be possible! We could have territorial treaties, as well great diplomats and the concept of embassies! I think the better way would be that: up to a specific point the border would be cultural, until you can have a mapmaking technology, (in that case the paper technology, for civ 4)!
 
I would definitely like "diplomatic borders" in place of or in addition to cultural borders. The player could simply "paint" the tiles he or she wants to claim or trade. This would be especially useful in peace negotiations; I may not want that city of yours, but I sure as hell want that Uranium mine of yours!

The only problem is to make the AI understand and cope with it, I guess.
 
How about claim by military occupation?

And I think it should still default to cultural borders if no occupation or treaties have claimed the land.
 
or, maybe units could put a flag in a tile,and would then control some of the surrounding tiles. Cultural borders would still exist, though.
 
I like the cultural borders.

But I would also like a military/political border on top of it.

However, I would like to see a feature that disappear from the past Civilisations, yet modified. .. Guerrillas units should spawn on plots you don't have the cultural border over, yet you have the military/political border over. These units should be barbarians but with a move of 0, they should sack the plots. Finally, their cultural ancestors should be able to "purchase" them, which would assimilate these units in his army.

Additionnally, destroying such guerrillas units should send a warning...so they stop and pause before spawning more. Nobody wants to die...but if hell break loose, then everyone spawn at the same moment. Maybe all guerrillas would vanish if you destroy half of them in a turn, except these with XP. They should be more likely to spawn if you are at war, if you are at war with their homeland, or if many guerrillas are alread there.
