Nonexistant Interface

I am running Civ: BTS on Vista, freshly installed this morning, and when I go to play a game I have no interface, what I mean is no buttons in the top right for menu/advisors and the lot, no scores in the lower right hand corner, no buttons for unit actions, and no tech research bar. I was able to get interface once during a Play Now option, I tried again and the following game again was interface-less.

When I begin a game, after the loading stage and before the opening greeting as the leader and founder of civilization blah blah, I get this technology advisor screen with the first few religious techs showing. Not detrimental but a little weird?

is this game patched?
did you install with admin rights?
is this a digital copy or a cd/dvd one?

just patched up, working fine. probably should've done that first
