Noob Questions about the AI

I just started playing Civ 4 today and I had a couple quick questions (I looked for answers in other threads but didn't find what I wanted)...

For the workers, is there any way to tell them to automatically build a certin thing exclusively? Like if I want a bunch of farms, can I tell my worker to just go around building farms, but not have to tell him to build each one individually?

And for the AI that decides what the city will build next, is there any way to tell it to build only buildings and not units? I keep having the problem of the city building insane ammounts of troops.

Thanks!

For both, no, unless you want to modify the XML. I can't provide you with any links on how to, but I think there are a few 'crash course' topics in the Customization forum.

Well, I'm not sure about the second one, since I never use governors.

Welcome to CivFanatics!
Jerrymander is right, there is no way to "customize" the automated city governor or worker actions. I'd suggest easing yourself into manually handling at least city builds, as the AI doesn't do a very good job of selecting them for you (if you need advice on what's best to build in a certain situation, there are many people here who can help you out.)

Well, first off you should never automate production of your city. The only thing I ever automate is citizens, and which tiles to work ( I change it if I'm going for something like a wonder though )

..And keep in mind improvements only benefit you if the tile is being worked on by the city.

I like to automate cities (mainly the newly captured ones) when I know I'm going to win and it is just a matter of time.

Basically, I don't care what they build in this situation, I just don't want that stupid city build window to pop up!

@jikanta

What you can do is give consecutive orders by holding shift. So if you want 5 farms, you can hold shift, order the move to the first site, click build farm, order move to the second site etc. That should keep the worker off your back for a while :-)

Oh hey, that thing with the shift key sounds helpful, I'll try that on my next game. Thanks!

I wonder if it works on cities too... like maybe I can que up 4 or 5 buildings in a row for my city to build so it won't keep asking me every few turns...

Am I crazy or didn't Civ 3 have an AI for your city that you could selectively set to create buildings, units or both?

It's a little bit different for cities. Clicking on an item while holding shift will put it on the bottom of the queue, with ctrl on the top, with alt it will build it indefinitely; alt-shift and alt-ctrl are also possible.

Alt-clicking is really useful if you're going all-out militarily. It would be nice if you could somehow created queues in advance, say a commerce queue and production queue containing the appropriate buildings, and select them on founding a city. Although I find choosing a new building once every 10+ turns not that much of a bother...
