I am very new to the game (about a couple of weeks). I have a couple of questions/observations (I did look through the FAQ):

1) Whenever I build the pyramids, I don't seem to have a granary in every city on the continent (or any more than the few I built at least). I have installed the latest patch from the Civ3 website (1.29 I believe). Am I missing something here.

2) When is a game hopeless, if I get several (4-5) technologies behind, do I have a prayer of catching up. I am presently playing the second level

I am having alot of fun with this game though. Problem is it is addicting in the sense that you are always waiting for the next something or another (perhaps that goes away with the newness). I particularly enjoted watching the iriquios and the romans beating each other up all over my territory

Welcome to CFC! [party]

1. The Pyramids put a granary in every city on the same continent. Period!

2. Certainly! Do you build libraries and universities? What govt are you in?

OT: Is it my connection or are we wading in syrup here today?

This is called the 'Just one more turn' syndrome :) We are all suffering from it (we aren't fanatics for nothing ;) )

Thanks for the quick reply.

My connection appears to be OK.

With regards to the granary, will the granary appear as a granary with the half+half on the bread display (and will it appear on the left side as a granary). Not looking to question you, just looking to see if I have a problem or if I have a bug etc.

I do build libraries + colleges, but I think I may have wallowed in Monarchy for too long before jumping to Democracy. Is monarchy a waste of time or should I typically take Republic as soon as I can get it.

One more question if you have the time, What are the three numbers next to your civilzations name in the lower right hand corner ex. (4.6.1). If this is something I missed in the manual please give me a slap on the wrist and tell me to read my book more :-)

Thanks,

BT

Welcome to the CFC, btaft. :)
The numbers you mention are the current values for tax, science and luxeries. A '3' means 30% of your income is spent on that subject. Use F1 (the domestic advisor) to modify these values.

Go for the Republic!

(4.6.1) is what you spend on research and lux (hit F1) and another number I don´t remember right now
I guess 6 is research and 1 is lux. I have a memory leak right now...

Edit: a space oddity beat me to it...

Monarchy is a very viable government. It's my gov of choice when I'm not in my favorite, Republic.

Advantages to Monarchy include:
  • No War Weariness (not exactly accurate: You don't suffer from it. But will if switching to a WW gov)
  • No despotism penalty (-1 to any food, shield, commerce above 2)
  • Cash Rush
  • Military Police <- useful for keeping the peace.
  • Unit Support, not available in Rep or Dem (pre-C3C)

It doesn't have the commerce bonus that Democracy and Republic enjoys, but it's a good government.

And I prefer Republic to Democracy. You can have more war in Republic than Demo, and when you get to Conquests, Republic has unit support which goes a long way to more money, since you don't have to suport as many units.

Thanks to all on the good responses, though I am hoping to still get some feedback on how the granary appears in each city with the pyramids (i.e. does it show up as a granary on the city improvements window of the city, does it show up as a split "bread basket" in that window or does it just show up as requiring fewer breads to increase in size and you have to do the math. I am still trying to figure out alot of these.

Last night I got beat by the Indians to building the Sistine Chapel by 1 turn. Is this reason enough for starting a war (just kidding....)

Thanks for all the help.

Try zoom to "Cityname", in the lower left side every city improvement and wonder are listed.

Did you swap to another wonder or did you waste all your shields? If you had to waste all your shields - I say take India... (j/k).

Hi Btaft --

I wanted to throw in regarding question #2 that the best way to keep up and catch up in tech is to trade actively with all of the AIs. It takes a little practice to get the hang of, but sometimes a brisk round of trading can rake in three or more techs for you.

Something that has really helped me as a newish player is the War Academy article on "Wonder Addiction." My game got a lot more successful when I started ignoring wonders for the most part. It's worth checking out, anyway...

If I remember right, if you own the Pyramids the granary should show up in the improvement box (lower left) of all your city screens. If they aren't there, check to make sure that you actually have the Pyramids!

On the subject of the Pyramids:

It gives you a granery in every city on the continent it has been build. So never build the Pyramids on a small island.

Every building in a city is displayed on the lower left part of the city screen. It is a list and if it gets long then you can scroll it. If a building is present due to a wonder then it won't cost any maintenance costs (presented by a number of piles of gold next to the building names in the list).

The dividing line in the food storage box that appears when you've build a granery only appears when more than half of the food box has been filled.

I hope the above solves your problems with the Pyramids

Did you swap to another wonder or did you waste all your shields? If you had to waste all your shields - I say take India... (j/k).

Yup, I lost most of the shields, all of the other wonders were taken. I did manage to get a very nice Colesium though at a bargain price. Now I have to build some boats to take on those Indians :)

Thanks to all about the granary help. I will double check tonight. This game is realy very deep (which is good). I really like that it is turn based so it doesn't become a click fest, though it can get that RTS feel when you get into the "just one more turn mode"

Yeah, that "virtual RTS" feel is what I love about the game. It has the same intensity, but you can also do a lot of tinkering and strategic planning. Plus, it doesn't punish poor reflexes.

Good enough for me.

And I'm not kidding.
