This mod adds North Korea, officially Democratic People's Republic of Korea, to the game. The mod is attached to this post.

Leader: Kim Il-Sung

Unique trait: Songun (Land Unit maintenance reduced by 25%, -15% experience required for Promotions and Great General Combat Bonus increased by 15%)

Unique unit: Korean People's Army (It has an extra :c5moves: and costs 40 :c5production: less than regular Infantry that it replaces and starts off with the Morale and Nationalism Bonuses)

Unique building: Collective Farm (It replaces the Hospital. It gives +4 :c5food: and +15% :c5production:)

Consequentially there are also a few, but necessary changes to the default Korean civilization:
- renamed to South Korea
- city names list changed, now without North Korean cities
- colors changed to white and blue

Suggestion:
My Juche Tower and Arirang Festival wonders mod might be a fairly good addition to this mod.
Also, jmknpk's RealCiv wonders mod might also be useful, so when playing North Korea, only you can build these two wonders. Can't find the link now.

Additional info/comments:
This is my first mod of a new civilization, so any comments are welcome.

North Korea is a modern, politically-born state as a result of the Korean War and not a civilization in the proper sense, but I still think it's fun to play with, especially as in reality it is one of the most militarized countries in the world (finally some incentive to adopt Autocracy :)).

Secondly, I know that all data in the mod is not 100% accurate history-wise. For example:
- the Korean People's Army in reality is the name for all combined armed forces and not for a specific unit
- the Songun military-first policy was adopted by Kim Il-Sung's successor, Kim Jong-Il, after Kim Il-Sung's death

In the end, though, I think the fun factor has an advantage against historical accuracy, as it's a game, not a history contest. Still, I'm open to any suggestions regarding the UA, UU and UB, if you have some ideas. I think there's much potential regarding the two main focus-points of North Korea - propaganda/cult of personality of the country's leaders and the Songun military-first policy.

Thirdly, my opinion is that the addition of a modern South Korea civilization would be much better than just those few changes to the default DLC Korea civilization, but it will take some time, until (and if) I make it.

Notice:
The leader/diplo screen for now is Sejong of Korea. I tried hard to add a 2D screen of Kim Il-Sung, but the game kind of crashes (see below) already when selecting a civilization, so I removed the corresponding .xml and .dds files for the screen:

If anyone cares to help, I'd be grateful, especially as I want to continue making mods, though without unique diplo screens it's not a complete project. I checked, copy-pasted what others did (Zulu and Celt mods for example), but with no results.

This could be a cool civ to play as, but a few comments:

The UT and UB seem overpowered, and the UB does not make sense since starvation in North Korea is a real problem. That being said I think making it easier to field a large army is the right direction for North Korea.

As for the diplomacy screen, it's actually really easy. Just create a new xml file and copy and past the following into it.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<LeaderScene FallbackImage="AtlasDiplo.dds"/>

Replace "AtlasDiplo.dds" with your diplo screen art. That's it. If you want to see an example you can get my Atlantis civ mod. The xml for the leader diplo screen is in my art folder.

Thanks for the feedback, especially regarding the UT and UB, as I had similar thoughts, I was in doubt about both of them (I feared the UT seems overpowered and that the collective farm maybe was not a good choice as in reality it revealed itself (though much later, not when implemented during early Kim Il-Sung's era) as a disaster.

I'll definitely make an update, to try with the diplo screen and modify the UT and UB.

hmm tried again, followed your instructions but no luck with the diplo screen. I also downloaded your Atlantis Civilization mod and it seems I did the same as you, but still, those sky-blue distorted icons appear instead of my icons for the leader and the unique unit. And even if I wanted to continue to the game, it crashes. The unique building (although it will be changed in the next version) uses the default Floating gardens icon, so no problems with that.
Anyway, I attach this modified version to this post.

If those distorted icons come up, I guess there's something wrong with the icons, though it's strange because the mod alone (without a new diplo screen, but with Sejong instead) works, the icons too. Maybe some clash/collision in the .xml files.

I just put your North Korea (v 1.2) (v 1) files into my MODS folder and loaded up the civ. The civ loaded fine and did not crash. I played as North Korea and against. When I played against, your diplo screen came up. The icons were still blue and distorted though. When I open your icons with Gimp, I get the following problems:

For NORTHKOREA_256.dds, NORTHKOREA_128.dds, and NORTHKOREA_64.dds, the icons are blue and distorted just like they appear in the game.

For NORTHKOREA_80.dds and NORTHKOREA_32.dds, there are no icons and no white spaces for icons. I get the same thing when I open your mapnorthkorea512.dds. In all of these cases your file sizes are incorrect.

I cannot open up NORTHKOREA_45.dds

The problems that I am having with your .dds files could be on my end with using Gimp. What program are you using to convert your art to .dds? You may want to try my approach which was to use Gimp to open someone else's art, then paste in my art and then anchor in my art over theirs.

hope this helps

I'm using Adobe Photoshop.

I was curious, went to check the .dds files and  exactly as you said, distorted blue icons or similar. I didn't notice that before, because in the normal, first version (without unique diplo screen) there was no such thing, everything was fine, and as you can see on the attached thumbnails, it worked in the game.

EDIT:
Just copied my art files from the working version to the distorted, v.1.2, and now it works like a charm. Looks like somewhere between building the project I somehow crashed/distorted them by copy-pasting and similar. Now it works, so I'll focus on improving everything and later release a second version.

providing this ends up being balanced with the other civs I will definitley check it out.

I agree, I'd love to also see a korean war scenario with this.

Do i need to have the South Korea mod to play this pack?

The mod automatically renames Korea to South Korea and removes the original Korean cities that are situated in the South. It's all good.

I Downloaded this and used it (BTW awesome job, it looks so good and fun to play).
But, whenever I research "Steel" or go enter the "Renaissance Era" the game crashes EVERY time. I spent about 3 hours looking on the internet but I got nothing. I am running G&K.
Do you know why this happens?
Can you have a fix?

I really really want to play as the North and go against it as well but cant do it because it crashes all the time whenever the civilization researches Steel or enters the Ren Era.:(

The civ files must be missing spy names. That's the most usual cause for the Renaisance crash. The mod was probably made for vanilla and never updated to G&K. The author may not even be around anymore.

Damn, there has to be a way though. Maybe I can try to re-modify it? (That's how dedicated I am to making this work).

Oh wait! What if I disabled Espionage from the beginning setup??:eekdance:

Awesome! I just got to research "Steel" and entered the Renaissance Era without crashing!
For those of you who want to use this mod on G&K, just simply disable Espionage in the beginning setup of the game.

I think TuringMachine meant the cities in the North in his last post, by the way.

Although if both Koreas are playing, then it is almost certain that the DPRK would found Pyongyang first. I've noticed that if two civs have identical city names, then whichever gets to the name second will skip over it. For example, I've been playing as one of my modded civs recently (Kansai) and seeing as its capital is Osaka, which means that if Oda is also in the same scenario, he skips from Kyoto straight to Tokyo. (Which really should be Edo given the time period)

Thanks for the mod anyway. It provides infinite humourous diplomatic situations with the United Kingdom mod on. Who ever knew that Buckinghamshire and North Korea had signed a research agreement? (This actually happened in one of my games)

hey, Not sure if this has been changed or not but I would just like to point out that North Korea isn't a single party state. everything else though looks awesome.
