Not reading the CD

So it's like upgrading it basically... I guess what I'm wondering is, I want the DVD drive for me, but since I'm not really the person that's going to be using it most of the time, I'd like it to work fine and not be a hassle for everyone else...

But don't you have the same problem? Are you getting a DVD drive?

Yes its upgrading your computer. Having a dvd drive in the computer shouldnt be a problem for anyone else. You could make it a Chrissy present for your parents :D But seriously it is up to you. I think I read that there will be a port to Macs, but when I don't know.

No. I have a dvd drive on my comp and Civ works fine. I was just looking through here to see if anyone was playing the music cd that comes with Civ4 in Civ4.

Not you shadow, I thought it was kipper that was having the same problems... I think I read something about it coming out on Mac next year... not sure I want to wait that long! Why is it never easy!

Yep I don't think I could wait that long either. And I agree with you, with everyone posting that they are having problems and the computer not belonging to you it make it difficult to decide what to do. Best of luck.

Seems as though there may be a few people in AU with blank DVD's in the box - well at least one more over on Apolyton - one is hapstance, two is coincidence, three - well three just has to be a conspiracy by no less than Sid himself :)

Well that kind of throws a spanner in the works of me going out and getting a DVD drive....

Does it at least read the DVD?

What it does is spin the DVD, then it opens the DVD folder. Inside there is nothing, although the properties show that 1.3GB space is occupied on the disk. There is no autoplay feature direct to install. There is nothing to click on inside the folder.

I would report this formally, if I thought any support would be forthcoming. I hope, hope, hope, hope, it is just me, and that they have not shipped unplayable DVDs to Oz.

If you want, go all the way. Get a DVD writer. Then you can read/write CD's and DVD's.

Here's a "INSTALL A DVD PLAYER 101"

These are the steps you do to REPLACE your current CD-Rom drive with something newer:

1) Open up the case.
2) Disconnect the power connector, data connector and (possibly) the audio connector from the CD-Rom unit. If there is no audio cable (small, thin cable that leads to your sound card or main board), don't worry about it.
3) Find all the appropriate screws and unscrew the device from its position.
4) Remove the drive.
5) LOOK at the CD-Rom drive and find the jumpers for Master/Slave selection.

- The jumpers for master slave selection usually look like a row of pins sticking out from the back of the drive unit, usually near the data connector (which looks like a LARGE row of pins). The often have the descriptions "CS, SL and MS or MA" on them, and a little plastic cover covering one or more of the pin sets. You only need to worry about one plastic cap if there is more then one, and that is the one on either CS, SL or MS (sometimes MS is MA).

- Note where the jumper is on on your CD-Rom drive. Now pick up your new DVD unit, and locate the same jumper on the back of the drive. Set it to the SAME selection as the CD-Rom drive.

- In MOST cases, the selection is "CS" or "Cable Select" on both the old drive and the new one, and that means you have to do nothing. If it is on another setting, match the DVD drive setting to the CD-Rom drive setting.

6) Push the unit into the computer, tighten the screws.
7) Connect the power, data and audio cables. Again, if there wasn't an audio cable don't worry about it. :)

8) Close the computer box back up and turn on the power! Your good to go.

Here's some pictures:

Powercables look like this:

Datacables look like this:

Audiocables look often like this:

Jumpers for Cable Select, Master, or Slave often look like this:

I know it may look incredibly complicated reading this, but once you have done it once, its going to be very easy the next time :)

Ordinarily, this would be a good idea (and thanks for all the how-to!). But I have a reader/writer and it doesn't read. Mine is an NEC N-6500A -- a recent install.

It might just be that some of us in Oz have received unreadable DVDs. Doesn't bother me. I'm over it. I'm not going to exchange this disk for a 'working' copy that will require 100 fixes and then might not even work. I will exchange Civ IV for a credit, to obtain a product that works out of the box.

I would try updating the DVD driver. Do you have problems with other disks?

I'm not sure that you have a DVD. The system requirements only say 4xCD-ROM.

That's wierd. With all the other requirements a DVD reader would be expected.

So do other DVDs work in the drive?

Well, I have a similar problem to the above ones.

I bought the game yesterday (DVD version - in Australia), and the game installed fine but it wouldn't run due to the ATI problem that others have had. I followed the fix, and after the reinstall I had a new problem.

When trying to load the game, it says 'Please Insert the Correct CD-ROM'.

Problem is, I have a DVD writer! I tried fiddling for hours last night to get the sucker to work, including a couple more reinstallations, but no luck. Not sure whether to wait for a potential fix or to get my money back...

I`m having similair problems. Put it in my DVD drive to install and nothing happens, just clunks as if it`s trying to read it but cannot. The DVD drive works fine with all other DVD compatible games. Soooo F*****ing annoying as i`ve been wanting to play this game for a long time. What is it with these modern games, they just don`t seem to be compatible with many `normal systems these days. My system is Xp,Pent 4,runs at 2.50GHz,768MB RAM, Ge Force 5200256MB, Loads of memory
