The Chronicles of the nation of AVALANCHE following the Great Cataclysm
As recorded by Chief Advisor and Command Scribe, Hikaro Takayama

Prologue: As the firey spectre of the giant Meteor hurled toward the bustling megalopolis of Midgar, Cloud, Tifa, Cid and the rest of AVALANCHE watched from their vantage point on the airship Highwind just when they were about to give up hope, Holy suddenly sprang up from the planet as the world's very life force rose to attack the foreign planetoid. As Holy wrapped around Meteor, there was a blinding flash, followed by an earth-shattering explosion, and that was the last anyone on board remembered.....

Chapter I: A Phoenix From the Ashes is Born

I, Hikaro Takayama, Chief Advisor to our august leader, Commander Cloud Strife will endeavor to relate the events of our great nation after the shattering of worlds. My own world seemed to have suffered the same fate as theirs; one minute I was getting ready for work, and the next I wake up in a strange land with strange people. Largely due to my knowledge of military tactics and technichal matters (I was a weapons systems technician in the armed forces of my planet), Cloud saw fit to appoint me as one of his advisors, and as chiev Historian. Also in his council were others, some old friends of his, some whom he'd just met, and even one who he had a....history with. We all had to work together, though to survive in this strange new world....

The survivors had slowly gathered from among the wreckage of the dimesional storm, setting up camp beside a river at the base of the last mountain in a long range. Cloud, the blond, spiky-haired leader gathered his advisors together to make an important announcement. His voice rang out as he spoke, "We have all ended up here today because of things way beyond our control, however, we now have enough surviors gathered to begin rebuilding what was lost. It will take many years of suffering, but we will rise out of the ashes once more. First of all, I need reports from all the advisors on our current status, and where a good place to build a town would be."

Cid Highwind, the Science advisor stood and said, "$***!! We're lucky to be alive, let alone worrying about rebuilding. Unfortunately, we've only managed to recover three of the lost technologies. First of all, many of the people here are animists, so we have shamans who can get us to building shrines, secondly, a number of farmers joined our group, and so we've managed to preserve the techniques of pottery and using ceramic pipes to irrigate our fields. Finally," at this he nods towards Cloud and some of the other advisors, "since we've got so many brave warriors leading our people, we have established a warrior code, and can build bows to train archers. The shamans and me've been lookin' to see what else we can re-discover. Our possibilities are writing, wood working, metal working, mysticism, tribal council, animal domestication and masonry."

After speaking his piece, Cid sits down, and Tifa, the domestic advisor, takes the floor. She says, "Now that we have gathered almost a thousand survivors, we must settle here without delay!!"

At that, a blue-haired warrior wearing strange armour and a long, curved sword by his side stood up and objected, "Negative, some of the villagers said that they spotted what was either the ocean or an extremely large lake just accross this river. I'd advise settling beside the ocean so that we may be better able to explore and search for other survivors."

Cloud nodded and said, "Chief Advisor Takayama has a good point. One we've made contact with others, it would be much easier to trade by boat than over land." Tifa nodded and sat back down. Cloud then turned to look at the next advisor, who was grinning like a cat that had eaten the canary. "Well, looks like you've got some good news for us, Yuffie," he wryly commented.

"You betch!!" Yuffie Kisaragi, shouted leaping into the air. As the youngest advisor, and being naturally hyper, she was prone to outbursts like that. She then regained her composure and said, "My prospecting team has discovered a buttload of precious gems in these mountains, which oughtta make a lot of people around here happy!! I vote that we call them the 'Mineral Mountains' and this river the 'Diamond River'." The other advisors nodded in aggrement, and the mountains and river would bear those names ever since.

Yuna, the Cultural advisor suggested that once the city was built, they should immediately start work on a shrine so that she could recruit more shamans and summoners and increase the frequency of sendings and thus reduce the risk of fiends appearing near the city. She was vetoed, however, by the Sephiroth, the military advisor, and most of the other advisors.

Thus the plan was set into motion to move the main group of settlers accross the Diamond River and build the first city by the sea. In the meantime, a worker party was formed under the leadership of the trade advisor and ordered to build a road to the gem deposits on the mountainside. After the council meeting was adjourned, the group of survivors prepared to break camp for the journey ahead. In commemoration of this momentous event, Commander Cloud decreed that this would be known as the Year 1 after the Apocolypse (1 PA).

The survivors gathered along the Diamond river:

After a long journey and 14 years of hard work, the town of Tifa's 7th Heaven was founded between the Diamond River and the Great sea. Almost immediately, the domestic advisor established a tavern bearing the same name in the basement of the palace, and it was there that most council meetings would take place.

Immediately West of the new city, ancient ruins and relics of a long-lost civilization were found. Yuffie and Yuna suggested that maybe one day the sacred relics could be enshrined in temples throughout the land, but for now wandering laborers from the city would gawk at the strange stone structures, and work the meager plains nearby for food as well as occasionally pulling up pieces of the rubble for construction projects in the city.

In the meantime, a group of young bucks raring for adventure were being trained as fighters, and once their training was complete, they would be sent to scout the vast unknown territories outside the city. Cid and the local shamans and sooth sayers suggested that after we figured out metal working, we might want to get started on researching Tribal Council since, as Cid put it, the current way of running things was p*** poor, and with the new government in place, everything would run smooter. To help support that, Tifa plowed 90% of all tax revenues into scientific funding, but the new government was still a long ways off.

In 66 PA, the first group of figthers journey forth from the city to scout the surrounding area, while another batch of new recruits enter training. The working party still hasn't finished the road to the gem deposits, mainly due to the rugged charachter of the mountain, but they report that it will be finished shortly.

In 92 PA, the scouts reported bac that they'd found the mouth of the Diamond River beside a solitary mountain, but not much else worth reporting. The mountain was named "The Lonely Mountain" due to its isolaiton from the rest of the mountain range. In addition, the worker party had finished the road to the gems and was told to build a road to where the ruins were, and once there to begin irrigating the fields so that we could get enough people to settle another city.

Thus ends the beginning of our adventure in this new land.

Okay, picking up where I left off before my ISP went off-line for maintainance....

Our obviously pleased trade advisor reports that we've now got a steady supply of gems flowing in Tifa's 7th Heaven.
Gemroad.jpg

Our second group of fighters is soon ready, and they go exploring along the coast to the southwest. The First Fighter division discovers that the lonely mountain is not so lonely, but there is one ther peak nearby, so the mountans are renamed "Twin Peaks."

In 157 PA, the First Fighter division discovers several fields of wild rice in grasslands and some more gem deposits in the tundra to the Northeast. They also say that they've found a good spot for the second city almost due North of Tifa's 7th heaven. This city would have access to the rice for food and both of the twin peaks for minerals and raw materials. The Second Fighter divison, exploring to the South discovers what appears to be a continuation of the Mineral Mountain range. Our workers finish building a road to the relics and are told to start irrigating the plains. Tifa's 7th Heaven now has a population of 2000, and has trained the a third division of fighters, who now head inland to the east. Cloud holds another meeting of advisors to decide what the city shold work on next. Tifa suggests building a settler, but as Hikaro points out, the city didn't have enough people to try that yet. Sephiroth wanted Archers, and Yuna begs for a shrine so that she can train more priests to help with sendings. Cloud, seeing that with just the shamans that were trained at the palace, the influence of the city had still expanded thought of siding with Sephiroth, but then he looked at the financial ledger: They were close to supporting all the troops that they could without breaking their budget, and since shrines didn't cost the government anything for upkeep (they were paid for by the donations of pilgrims), he declares that Tifa's 7th Heaven will build a Shrine, followed immediately by a settler party.

In 183 PA, the 3rd Fighter division reaches the East coast of the land. Both Cloud and Chief Advisor Takayama begin to suspect that they may have ended up on some tiny, remote island. The 1st Fighters discover a bounty of Kelp and Sea Serpents in the sea surrounding the frigid tundra where the gem deposits are. The 2nd Fighters see what appears to be a small group of survivors in a tiny village. Sephiroth, army high-commander, orders them to proceed with caution since the village could be abandoned or worse, populated by fiends that had devoured the original inhabitants. A small desert and more gems in a hill are discovered south of the village.

Reports coming back from our scouts indicate more and more that we may be on an island, but the 3rd Fighters report seeing a strange citadel in the hills just south of a the eastern half of the desert. Upon arriving at the massive stone structure, they are greeted with hearty shouts of Rally-Ho!! Our scouts are greeted by the strange inhabitants of the village: Short stocky people with long, thick beards who call themselves dwarves. After exchanging pleasantries, the Dwarves politely decline our invitation to join our nation, however Dain Goldbeard, their king, said that if we ever settle a town nearby and build a road out their way, they'd be more than happy to help us out in any way that they could, especially seeing as we had several mountains full of gems that they didn't yet know about.

After a night of feasting with the dwarves, the 3rd Fighters continue on south toward a small lake in the desert.

In 222 PA, our first Shrine is built in Tifa's 7th Heaven, and Yuna moves out of the palace and into the shrine, so that she can start training new summoners full-time. Cid, in one of his better moods, repots that Metal Working has been discovered, and is told to get his researchers working on trying to figure out how to implement a tribal council. The workers have finished irrigating the fields among the relics, so they are sent to another set of fields in the plains and begin irrigating that. The 2nd Fighter division heads toward gem hill, but are told to avoid contact with the nearby village until reinforcements could be sent to the region. The 1st Fighters find a similar village located due Northeast of Tifa's 7th heaven, on top of the easternmost mountain in the Mineral range.

Upon reaching the top of the gem hill, the 2nd Fighters see dinosaurs in a small forest accross a shallow bay just south of the dwarven citadel. Cid suggests that if we were to re-discover the techniques for animal domestication, we could tame the beasts and train them to aid us in battle. Cloud tells him to keep working on the new system of government.

In the year 300 PA, the 1st Fighter division is sent to the spot beside the wild rice where our second city is to be built, just as our city produces it's first group of settlers, who also are sent to that location. Sephiroth grins when he's informed that we'll be putting our new metalworking techniques to good use, and Tifa's 7th Heaven starts making brass spearheads and training our first group of Warriors.

The known world as of 300 PA:
Avalanche300PA.jpg

Soon after, the 2nd Fighters find a village of lizardlike people who call themselves Bangaa. They said that they'd be willing to fight for us if we proved worthy and built a city nearby. Since that was a long ways of, our fighters move on. The 2nd and 3rd Fighter divisions also simultaneously discover that we're on a huge penninsula with a narrow isthmus connecting us to who knows where, and both are told to find out what lies accross the isthmus.

As the 2nd and 3rd Fighters begin the journey down the isthmus, the 1st Warrior division completed its training under Sephiroth in Tifa's 7th Heaven, and is sent to investigate the village to the northeast. Sephiroth ensures Cloud and the other advisors that with their superior weaponry, the Warriors should be able to handily defeat any fiends that may be lurking in the village. Tifa suggest that Tifa's 7th Heaven should organize another worker party, especially since Wutai, our second city, has just been founded on the coast between the Twin Peaks and rice fields to the northeast. The new city of Wutai begins training our second Warrior division.

The founding of Wutai:

Our first run in with fiends occurs in 376 PA. The Second Fighter Division hears bandersnatches howling on top of a nearby hill, so they hurriedly trow up some earthworks and other crude fortifications and hope for the best. The 3rd Fighters spot bannannas in the ancient forest to the south of the Bangaa village, and shortly therafter the Second Fighters are set upon by the fiends. The Fighters, though badly outmatched, make full use of their crude fortifications and defeat the frumious bandersnatches without taking a single loss! Some wandering Bangaa hunters who witnessed the battle said that they were impressed, and a celebration was held in the Tifa's bar back at the palace.

Not long afterwards, The First Warrior division discovers a group of figters in the mountain village that are willing to join our cause! The new recruits are sent to guard the passage through the Southern Isthmus in case any fiends or hostile nations were discovered to the South. The 1st Warriors are then sent to secure the location that has been picked for the 3rd city. This location is in the middle of the plains and deserts, but will be within reach of the dwarven citadel, not to mention it would be key for helping secure our Southern regions from fiends and potential competitors. A second work crew is assembled in Tifa's 7th Heaven and sent irrigating plains towards Wutai. Tifa's 7th Heaven then begins training a second group of Warriors under Sephiroth's expert guidance.

Thus ends the second chapter of our tale.

BTW, is anyone actually reading this story? I started this about two weeks ago, and haven't got a single response...

Anyways, I'm going to try moving things along a bit faster, with less reporting and more story. So now we begin chapter III:

Chapter III: No Man is an Island, but Nations Sometimes Are

In 416 PA, Commander Cloud calls an emergency meeting with all of his advisors after recieving reports back from his scouts. "Military Advisor Sephiroth, you are absolutely sure about this?" Cloud asks.

Sephiroth levels him a cold stare, "I went down south with the Chief Advisor so we could verify this first-hand, and what I'm telling you is the truth: we're all alone on a large island..."

"Actually it's a small continent," Chief Advisor Takayama interjected.

"Whatever," Sephiroth growled, "As I was saying, we're all by ourselves on a small continent as our Chief Advisor, Mr. Know-it-all said. Furthermore, there are some old ruins down at the southern tip of the continent that are crawling with fiends. I've ordered the fighters to clear out the fiends and see what they find in the dungeon, and I've sent our second group of warriors to investigate the small village in the desert."

"Very well," Cloud mumbled, "Do any of the other advisors have anything to add?"

"We finally got the road to Wutai finished, and our merchants have been shipping gems to the city," Yuffie replied.

"We're nearly finished with drafting up the basics of a tribal council government. Of course, we're going to have one hell of a mess until everyone gets used to the new system, but I'd bet my last gil that we'd double, if not triple our production and research rates," Cid said.

Cloud nodded, "That's good, so any suggestions on what our immediate and long-term goals should be?"

Tifa spoke up, "We need to build more cities, and lay claim to this entire island before anybody else comes here and gets a foothold."

Hikaro, the Chief Advisor, nodded, saying, "Yes, that should be our goal, especially securing those dinosaurs and bangaa with a city on the Southern Isthmus. That way we can build a canal accross the isthmus at its narrowest point so our ships, when we get the technology to build some, won't have to go the whole way around the Southern Peninsula. Speaking of Ships, I say that we should research the technologies that will allow us to build ships, as well as writing. Then we will be able to get the Morhen Lighthouse, which will allow our ships to venture further out into the ocean."

"Sounds good," Cloud nods, "Also, Sephiroth, as soon as better troops are trained, send all of our fighters south to keep after the fiends that seem to be popping up down there."

Sephiroth nods, and since there weren't any other questions, the meeting is adjourned and everyone files out of Tifa's Bar in the palace cellar.

Several weeks later, messangers report back from the forward scouts in the Southern Penninsula. It seems that the entire 2nd Fighter division was wiped out by the Bandersnatches in the dungeon, but not before puttin the fiends in a hurt locker. The 3rd Division, was then able to finish off the few surviving fiends. After looting the dungeon (and recieving the "quest complete" sound :p), they brought back some "eyedrops" that were only worth 25 gil, but with the national treasury only containing 10 gil, every little bit helped. Not long after, Wutai's finishes training its first warrior division which promptly takes up the city's guard duties. The 1st Fighter division proudly marches down the road to Tifa's 7th Heaven for thier triumphant return, banging thier spears against their shields and singing rowdy marching songs. Cid has to cover Yuffie's ears until they've passed into their barracks and out of hearing range. As the fighters departed Wutai, another group of the city's citizens, seeking to escape the crowded conditions of the rapidly growing town, start forming a work party to irrigate the rich rice fields near Wutai.

After several months, the Second Warrior Div cautiously enters the village in the desert and is greeted by another band of fighters willing to join our cause! The green fighters are sent on Barbarian patrol just as Cid bursts into Cloud's office at the palace. "We've figured out how to run a tribal council!" He whoops. After doing some hi-fives all around, Cloud immediately tells Tifa to begin impementing the new system of govenment. Things then proceede to go straight to hell for several months as bugs are worked out of the system, but when it's all said and done, the new government lived up to the hype that Cid gave it, and raw materials and trade goods began to pour in where they only triclked before. It was during this time that our surveyers determined that the sites for the third and fourth cities weren't in the best places, and the warriors that had been sent to guard the areas against fiends were sent to the new locations that were picked.

A settler group is formed in Tifa's 7th Heaven, and moves to a site to a site picked out on the coast to the SouthEast of Tifa's 7th Heaven, and the city of Ft. Condor is founded. The happy pioneers build a shrine to show appreciation to the spirits for their safe journey.

Shortly after Ft. Condor is founded, Cid bursts into Cloud's office again, shouting, "Boss, we've figgered out wood working, as you can see by this finely crafted Item I've got here." Cid then presents a finely carved scepter with a large Emerald from the nearby gem mines set into the top.

Cloud repspectfully takes the offered scepter, and says, "Excellent, we're on our way to getting off this 'small continent'... But I've been thinking, Cid: You realize that we've got several thousand acres of plains, grasslands and forests, yet no rubber, spices, herbs or anything of that sort.... I think we should work on Animal Domestication before we start on writing, just call this a hunch, but I'm willing to bet that we've got at least a couple herds of cattle and maybe some Chocobos out there as well." Cid nods, "Yeah, we sure could use some, especially around the capitol. I'll get my boys on it right away."

Several months later, Animal Domestication is discovered, and a herd of Chocobos is found in the forest outside of Tifa's 7th heaven!! In addition, Ft. Condor starts training the first ever archer batallion, as another settler group moves to settle in the hills on the southern coast between the Dwarves and the Gems. Some workers building a road toward the proposed city site report seeing a bandersnatch coming from the general direction of the Southern Isthmus. The warrior guarding the potential city site is sent to protect the road construction crew, and a new group of Archers recently trained at Tifa's 7th Heaven are rushed to reinforce Ft. Condor's garrison. The Bandersnatches attack Ft. Condor and get stuck full of arrows and spears for their trouble. This is just the beginning of what would be long rememberd as the Great Fiend War.

After the first bandersnatch is defeated, the warrior guarding the road crew moves to the dwarven citadel on top of the hill, and spies another unearthed dungeon crawling with fiends. After getting the snot beat out of him, but killing all the fiends in the process, the warrior finds a treasure chest in the dungeon with 25 gil. When he hears the "Quest complete" sound, he gets the uncontrollable urge to do some cool victory poses.

In 636 PA, the fourth city, Cosmo Canyon, is founded SW of Tifa's 7th Heaven, and once again starts building a shrine (well, we are a religious people, after all :p). In the meantime, one of the Fighter divisions on fiend patrol in the untamed jungles of the southern penninsula spots a huge horde of fiends moving right for him. Sephiroth gets a grim look on his face as he relates the messanger's report that not only are the run of the mill bandersnatches leading the pack, but a large number of ancient machina known as Custom Sweepers are also on the rampage. The fighters move into the nearby forest for protection. After several agonizing days, the Fighters lose the fiends, but when they move to the top of a nearby hill to get their bearings, they discover that they're right beside yet another dungeon. Ft. Condor finishes training a group of archers which are promptly sent to Cosmo Canyon, as the fighters from Cosmo Canyon are sent to try keeping the fiends contained in the Southern Penninsula.

Every spare Warrior and Fighter is sent to the Southern Penninsula as the last group of fighters down there die in a full frontal assault on the fiend-infested dungeon. Another group of settlers are sent to settle between the gem hill and the dwarven citadel on the Southern part of the Mainland as the troops start pouring into the Southern Penninsula.

In 672 PA, North Corel is founded and, as you may have already guessed, starts building a shrine. Meanwhile, yet another Bandersnatch appears on the same hill to the South of Fort Condor, withing striking distance of several workers irrigating the desert south of the city (side note: boy am I glad I picked an Agricultural civ on this map, otherwise I'd still only have maybe two productive cities :crazyeye: ), and one of the Archers guarding the city are sent to protect the workers.

Some weeks later, as construction on a new barracks is started in Tifa's 7th Heaven, Cid calls a meeting of the various advisors in Tifa's Bar in the Palace cellar.

"We've finally got writing done," he says, "and on top of that, we've been able to decipher the writing found in the ruins to the west of our city. You see, these ruins were built by a people that called themselves the 'Al Bhed' and the ruins were once their capital city, Home. You see, this Island's name originally was Bikanel, and it was much dryer than it is now. I'm guessing that they got wiped out in the same Apocolypse that brought us here."

"No, that's not what happened," Yuna, the cultural advisor blurted out, "My mother was Al Bhed, and Home was destroyed by the Guado several months before everything got caught up in the massive Farplane storm that brought us all here. I thought this area looked rather familliar..." Tifa and Yuffie quickly moved to comfort Yuna as she started softly crying, and the other advisors bowed their heads in silence.

After a few moments of sullen silence, Chief Advisor Takayama finished praying (as he was wont to do under such circumstances) and said, "I have an idea: what better way to remember those who inhabited this land than to translate their history and write great epics about their heroic deeds."

The advisors nodded, and thus the research into writing good literature began in earnest.

As the weeks go by, the Fiend Wars enter full swing. A pack of Bandersnatches attacks two warrior parties south of Ft. condor and the warriors gain enough experience to level up after defeating the bandersnatches! Wutai builds settler, which is sent to Southern Isthmus to build a key support city for the on-going anti-fiend campaigns and to gain access to the Bangaa and dinos. At the same time, a simultaneous assault is carried out on both the Northern and Southern Dungeons. One regular Warrior is wounded, but kills the bandersnatches and finds 25 gil worth of crappy treasure. The veteren Warriors from the previous battle are sent to guard site for the 6th city. The battles with the fiends reach a pitched crescendo, as a group of rookie fighters from one of the villages attacks first, and gets killed without even denting the hull on the Custom Sweeper there. One of the regualr Fighter divisions wades into battle and gets mowed down by heavy machinegun fire from the machina. The second group of rookies from the other village, attacking at the same time, damages the machine before being gunned down as well. Finally, one of the Warriors is wouned by a missile salvo while carrying out their attack, but he defeats one of the machines in the process! (note: Warriors are 2.2.1, Fighters are 1.1.1, Bandersnatches 3.3.2 and Custom Sweepers 5(8).4.2). After downing a few potions, the warrior attacks another Custom Sweeper, but succumbs to one of the machina's gas attacks.

An illustrated map showing the progress of the Fiend Wars and southern expansion.

In 756 PA, Literature is researched, and Tifa's 7th Heaven breaks ground for the first library to be built to store the great works of literature that are now being written. Cid suggests that maybe if we opened Tifa's Bar up to the general public and hosted formal "debate sessions" that we might get some good ideas flowing, so research on Philosophy is begun. Shorthly thereafter, Gongaga is founded between the Dinosaurs and Bangaa, earning it the nickname "Lizard City," and the first Bangaa show up at recruiting stations accross the country in order to whoop up on some fiends. A Veteran Warrior that has made it to the battlefield on the Southern Penninsula attacks one of the Custom Sweepers and wins.... Barely.

Thanks to all the shrines we've been building, the dwarven citadel falls witing AVALANCHE's sphere of influence, and the dwarven king pledges allegience to our cause. Niebelheim is founded on the tundra penninsula Northeast of Wutai, where gem deposits and off-shore kelp beds and sea serpents are to be found. The Veteran warrior in the Southern Penninsula downs a few hi-potions and defeats another Custom Sweeper.

In 792 PA Cid formulates his theories on Philosophy and the first "debate" is held at Tifa's Bar. As a result of the debate session, we discover shipbuilding right away, and start researching iron working. Wutai then starts building the Windhurst Lighthouse, while one of the Regular warriors down south defeats another one of the many fiends there..

A few weeks later, the nation's first library is built in Tifa's 7th Heaven, and work is started on the Temple of the ancients. Th City of the Ancients is founded on the mountain where one of the villages used to be and Corral Valley built over top of one of the most annoying fiend dungeons on the penninsula west of Gongaga and North Corel, ending the threat from that area.

In 810 PA, Yuna opens the door to Clouds office in Tifa's 7th Heaven announcing some visitor. Four strangely dressed men walk into the office and shake Clouds hands.

"What brings you guys here?" Cloud asks.

"The Flying Deathtrap we were travelling in crashed a ways north of your city," one who identified himself as "Thief" replied.

"Yeah, we should never have bought something that was just dug up from a swamp somewhere by a slick-talking used machina dealer," the one named "Red Mage" snorted.

"Well, anyways, we just came from a country called Alexandria and wanted to tell you that they just got finished building the Tomb of the Unknown King," The evil looking one known as "Black Mage" stated. After shaking hands all around, the visitors, who called themselves the "Light Warriors" departed to continue on their journey. Afterwards, it was discovered that several valuable items were missing from the palace.

"Why those no-good sons of...." Cloud muttered.

"Well, at least they left some interesting books in the Library," Tifa said, trying to comfort him. Cloud then goes to the library and finds the rest of his advisors reading the new books. Cid was reading a book entitled "The Secret and Arcand Artes of the Light Warriors" by Red Mage, Sephiroth was reading "The Techniques of the Art of Sticking Pointy Things Into Fleshy Things" by Fighter, Yuffie was reading, "How to Rip off Friends and Bamboozle People" by Thief, and Hikaro was reading "How to Solve all Your Problems Through Stabbity Means" by Black Mage. After going through the books himself, Cloud shakes his head and returns to his office in the palace. (Note: Thanks to Brian Clevenger of 8-Bit Theater who has given his support and permission for me to use some of his material in this mod).

Iron Working is researched, and unsurprisingly, there's not a scrap of Iron on the entire continent. This ticks the dwarves off to no end, since they were hoping to have access to quality Iron to train warriors to "Barsh us oop sum fainds." Our philosophers, once they were sober enough from the kegger they threw on occasion of discovering the new tech, are directed to research Map making, then to go straight for Monarchy. In the meantime a New fiend den is found on the Southern Penninsula . A warrior defeats two roaming fiends in the process and levels up.

826 PA marks a momentous occassion as the First division of Bangaa Trackers are trained in North Corel and sent South to help clean up the fiends. Upon defeating the last fiend on the Southern Penninsula, our first Bangaa Tracker is wounded but levels up! We get another lousy 25 gil from the dungeon and the Southern Penninsula is clear of fiends. In addtion to that, The ACS (AVALANCHE Command Ship) Aeris Gainsborough, our first Galley is built and prepares to explore the vast seas beyond our small continent. What will the brave explorers find? Ah, my friend, that's a question that will be answered in the next chapter of our story....

I'd like to see how it goes. I don't have much background knowledge of this mod. I'm reading it and I enjoy it so far.

I was tracking this page for a while now, and surprised also at the lack of posts. Maybe FF ain't their thing, eh?

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it!

A few things though:

miRageR, if you want some more BG for this mod, just go to the Final Fantasy Mod Project link in my sig. The mod hasn't been released, since it's still in the Alpha version. Some people were wanting a demo, so I decided to do a story of the latest playtest to kind of show what this mod is like.

I'm liking this. I'm not a big FF fan, but I'm a fan nonetheless.

By the way, what does the Dwarven Rally Hol do? You keep mentioning trades. Does it act like an airport or something that lets you trade with a Dwarven civ or something?

"Rally Ho!" is the standard greeting of the dwarves in Conde Petie in Final Fantasy IX. Dwarves are a strategic resource, and I added the "trading" as a way of symbolizing that we obtained the resource, and I'm sorry about the confusion that caused.

Dwarven villages are extremely rare strategical resources (along with Bangaa Villages, Elvaan Villages, Goblin Villages and Giant Spider Nests) that allow training of a full 4-era minor civ unit lineup. I wouldn't be extremely surprised if I'm the only civ with a Dwarven or Bangaa village in my territory (let alone both). On the flip side, somebody else no doubt has exclusive or almost exclusive access to Giant Spiders, Elvaan, or Goblins. Basically this adds more variety to the gameplay by having resource-based quasi-unique units that tend to affect the strategies of both AI and Human players. For instance, If I'd have had Goblins instead of Dwarves, I'd have a slightly different unit build priorities based on the fact that Dwarves tend to require additonal resources (Mythril, Iron, etc) and be more expensive but tougher than the standard Human units they correspond to, while Goblins are fast, cheap, weak and require much less resources to build...

Since I don't have Iron, and the ancient & middle age dwarven units require Iron (as well as dwarves, of course) to build, my dwarven village resource is currently worthless. :( Bangaa ancient units (Bangaa Trackers) don't require any resource other than Bangaa, so I'm good to go there, and thus I'm cranking out Bangaa trackers, which have the same stats as Warriors, but +1 movement (and they ignore move cost over hills and mountains). I'm also working on cranking out some dinosaur units, since, without Iron, they'll most likely be the best offensive units I'll be able to build all game..... But we'll just have to see what I discover accross the uncharted seas. ;)

Your story telling is very good - love the maps, and the mod looks quite interesting!

Just one question though form someone unfamilar with FF...what are the cities meant to be? Large lumps of coral? Forest grove? industrial effluent? The secretions of Jubba, blue beast of a thousand noses? :D

Lage lumps of some land-growing coral... You see, the Ancients (or Cetra) in FFVII and one of the ancient lost civilizationsin FFVIII (the Centra) built such cities, which is why I used these for the ancient ere of the culture group representing FF VII & VIII.

I'm curious, how did you make the date PA rather than the usual AD/BC?

Labels.txt file has all the stuff like what the dates are measured as, gold (which I changed to gil), and stuff like that.

BTW, once I've played a bit more this evening, I'll post an update. Let's just say that this map appears to be a cold, normal moisture archipelago.... (tundra galore :ack: )

Interesting so far :)...I remember you mentioning this in the mod thread, but I had forgotten about it. Looking forward to reading more.

This looks very cool, all though I don't have time to play anything as addictive as civilization right now ( college ), could I ask when this mod will come out?
