nothing to build in my cities

First up I am a builder type player rather than a warmonger - so this is aimed at similar players..:)

I often find especially in the middle and later ages that a particular city will runout of improvements to build (until the next tech advances) - and as I don't want to build any more millitary units - I have enough already and enough workers for what I need so I end up building wealth which seems a big waste.

Do other players experience this or is it just my bad play :crazyeye: ? If so what do you do in that situation ? Or what am I doing wrong?

Just curious.......

You can build wealth, but if I expect to be among the first to a new tech that unlocks a wonder then I build up a headstart by building half of a Palace ;)

i rarely encouter that, it is an indication that you should step up one level.

Do not build weath, the ratio is vcer bad, build troops and conquer!

Killer beat me to it, but in situations that I don't have anything to build, military gets the priority. This mostly occurs in the industrial ages for me, just after factories are built. Best time to get a lot of artillery and later on tanks. For the final(?) blow...

@joycem10: Pre-building only works for one or two cities. What about the other 8 to 20 cities?

I have that too on occasion.
I pre-build for a wonder or build wealth. I mostly don't aim to conquer (I like the space ship) and too many troops doing nothing are just wasting space and costing money.

Building defensive units is never a bad thing. They upgrade all the way to mech infantry, and simply having them around will protect you from AI agression. A plus even for a builder.

I believe 'wealth' is even more wasteful. I'm a builder as well, mostly, but a big military is necessary to earn respect. Yes that's how it works, also in CIV3.......;)

I always did Wealth, but sometimes I forgot to turn if off and build an improvement.

There are two reasons to build wealth:

1) If you have all improvements you want in every single city you own.
2) If you're lazy and don't bother with optimal play.

Let's assume that 2) don't apply. What sometimes happens to me is that all my core cities are fully improved, and I don't need more units. In this case, the best you can do in these cities is to build the unit that uses your shields most effectively (normally the most costly unit), move it to your border cities that has yet to build some improvements, and disband the unit there.

This works wonders for the border cities. A few tanks disbanded in a city, and voila - your corrupt city now has corthouse, temple and barracks.

This is 4 times as effective as building wealth in your core cities and hurrying the border improvements with gold.

Yes this sometimes happens to me after I have all my Stock Markets built and I got Hoover (esp when all my cities are on the same continent). I do what TheNiceOne said, build units for disbanding - I'll even save them for disbanding during a later war. Occasionally I'll run some wealth if for some reason I need it to be able to max out my science slider. This can happen if I don't have access to many luxuries.

TNO is right! It's a bit more effort than just doing weath and buying the improvements in the border cities, but it's worth it!

Wealth is handy for upgrading or rush-building military units. With Wall St it also earns you 5% interest (though limited to 50 per turn).

If you have (say) 10,000 wealth and you are subject to a sneak attack, within one turn you can have all your cities turn out a tank/infantry, say 30 in one go! Using this strategy you can tempt a civ to attack you (no war weariness) and then counter-attack with your new instant army.

It is boring to build wealth though: try a higher level or a mod with more units/improvements

Cavalry tend to be my favorite unit to stockpile for disbanding. Good shield value and they can get there fast. I'd never consider disbanding a tank for shields, personally. Even if they're not all that great, a tank is still and end-game unit, even if they're second-rate quality.

And as for military, if you have positive cash flow, your military is just fine, keep making units. :)

I often run into this problem and I usualy build wealth. I find that too many units (above 400) slows down the PC. There are some neat ideas here though with regard to disbanding the units. I never thought of trying to "store" shields as opposed to buiding wealth. It would certainly be more helpful than buying all of my improvements in the corrupt cities.

Good Idea!!

Try the dyp mod and you can build endlessly but I would charge yourself a little more for your units to keep things balanced. I play on monarch level and charge myself 4 gold per unit with democracy as my govt and 1 freebe per city. I make democracy everyone elses shunned govt so they dont use it.......dread

Same here. Wouldn't be nice to have the game remind you after a predetermined amount of time?

Hey, thanks for a great tip. I never thought of that. Will try it in my next game.

Play "Double Your Pleasure" by Kal-El and you will be much more hard-pressed to run out of new improvements to build!
