Now, does anyone has Jaguar yet?

I'll let you know next week. It's going to take me a bit longer than most to install since I have a new hard drive coming with it. This is going to be the mother of all clean installs. :D

My copy is in a UPS truck somewhere -- should be here Monday. :) My two (2!) 512 Mb DIMMs arrived last week -- my Cube's now cooking with 1.25 Gigs of RAM :D

Now do any of you know, since I'm still on OS 9.2.1, am I going to have to do a clean install of my computer? Do I need to back up everything before upgrading to OS X??

It's been a while since I've upgraded the system on an existing computer -- probably going from 7.5 to 8, since I went to OS 9 when buying my current computer.

I recomend that you at least backup the important files... just in case...

There shouldn't be any problem installing OS X but I think you should upgrade your classic OS to 9.2.2 .

Thanks, I'll definitely backup the important stuff. And thanks again for the reminder on 9.2.2 -- I keep forgetting to do that.

Best,

Dunno, been reading the discussion boards on Apple's site... lots of people claiming Jaguar isn't working quite right just yet.

Me personally, despite people with beige G3s telling me that it works, I'm hesitant to upgrade to it. 10.1.5 crashes my mac... I'm afraid to see what jaguar will do.... not to mention that I need to pay for what people are already claiming is as buggy as 10.0..... calling Jaguar's recent release "beta"

I just finished getting to the point where I can print. I had to use the Jim Derry "How to Print to Network Printers" workaround to use my DeskJet 1600C.. Just finished installing GhostScript7.0.5, and adding drivers for the DJ1600C, then running a "make install"

I don't know if I'll have to go through that whole circus once more once I get the nerve to use Jaguar.

If any of you have a beige G3, let me know how Jaguar works out for you.

Well, Jaguar's in and running on its own brand new hard drive. Civ III seems to work just fine - no surprises so far. :)

Depends. What's your hardware config (especially the video card)?

I have a g4 533mhz, 384 of ram and a gforce2 with 32 ram. Basicly this is it.

And I still need to know if the server os will do the same job as the client...

I don't know about the server, but you should see a nice speed improvement with your setup. On another note, I have heard that, if you have a dual boot system like mine (OK quad boot - OS 9, OS X.1, OS X.2 and UNIX), once you run Classic in Jaguar, you can never run it again in X.1. I haven't verified this, though.

I've been running Jaguar for about three weeks now and have had very few problems with it. I held out on upgrading to X for as long as possible, as I was very unhappy still with 10.1. I got the final candidate release a few weeks ago and have stuck with it. Much faster than previous versions, with many added features. Worth buying.

So did you buy it? ;)

Jag-u-ahr. Can't help slipping into that goofy English accent from the car commercial. It just sorta rolls of the tongue: Jag-u-ahr. So much nicer than "Jaag-wire," ya know?
Bought it on the family plan so my wife can run it off her iBook, too, yet both of us can legitimately call and complain. Okay:
Is it worth it?
Depends (as in super-sized "Huggies"). If you're running 9.anything (or less, assuming it's on a G3 or better), than yes, it is worth it. If you're already running 10.1.whatever, than no, it is not worth it... yet. Wait until 10.2.1 (due out soon, according to Thinksecret.com).
Why "Yes"? Well, OS X is indeed more stable. Unlike most MacEvangelist propaganda, it isn't the rock of Gibraltar or anything, but it's better than the average of 9. If anything, OS X manages to give big graphical Brass Ones to an underpinning otherwise known as "Unix." It is, at 10.1.5 (or 10.2) speedier than 9. And, since 9 is teetering on the edge of no support, 10 is the way to go (word on the streets is that the Amish may officially adopt/endorse OS 9). Also, if you're 10.1.5, 10.2's new print center is a step in the right direction. Though maybe only a baby step. Jag brings back "spring-loaded" folders, and that was enough reason for my wife, alone...
Why "no"? Well, if you're 10.1.5 already, the 10.2 improvements are subtle. The mods in the iApps aren't too bad, but the system reqs are bigger. The snazz-n-flash of Quartz Extreme may not be applicable for some older machines (like my crotchety ol' TiBook 400... which makes me somewhat crotchety, too). Some of your custom OS tweaks (like ASM, Windowshade and Tinkertool) need updates, not to mention the cold-blooded full-price slap in the face I got for moving to OS X early, only to have to pay full price for this new brand of kitty to purr on my laptop. Sorry. I try not to sound bitter. I will now engage the grapefruit filter...

Ran it over the top of a very stable 9.2.2 install on a G4/500 512 MB RAM. (originally a B/W G3, chipped up)

Runs great. 9.x apps are faster running in Classic mode under X. Very nice. Vid card, if anyone wants to know for compatibility, is a Radeon Mac Edition 32 MB DDR. Had it in when I installed 10.2

My first X purchase. My wife just got the new laptop she always wanted, too. Gotta love Mac.

Just installed Jaguar (and 10.2.1 update) 2 nights ago. My G4/450 (768MB RAM, Radeon Mac Edition 32MB DDR) seems to be quite happy.

I did a completely fresh install on my 2nd internal drive, and then began migrating my stuff over. Civ III runs well, Toast burns CDs well, other games (Diablo II, Fallout, Escape Velocity Nova, and more) work fine, the iApps work well, and the Adobe apps (Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign) seem OK too. I didn't notice any huge speed increase, but things seem 'snappier'. Classic, in the extremely limited time I used it, seemed faster as well.

I'm keeping a 10.1.5 install on my other drive for a while though, just in case.

I just got Jaguar and so far I am very pleased. I did have to turn off the quartz rendering on CivIII, as things ran very slowly with it on. I have resisted OSX, having loaded, tried and dumped 10.1 several times. I have used Jaguar for 3 days now and have not switched to 9 a single time.

You're hooked. Welcome aboard! :D
