"You aren’t the Thirteen Colonies declaring for liberty, you’re Rhode Island and Delaware sneaking off in the night."

This about sums up the way you win the WoI. It's a quote from the Gameshark Review, and I have to but totally agree.

It still bugs me. A lot. You have to know in advance how the mechanics work to win the game. You can't adjust to any changes during gameplay. If you miss the one-way track, better start anew.

So, please, Firaxis, include in the manual of your next game an A-Z "how to win" solution. Or just include a "win the game" button. :crazyeye: Would spare me some frustration.

Back to the old SVGA Col ...

No one here noticed it yet. That is why every one was so enthousiastic about the game. one way to ruin every ones time bro...

I disagree. I did not know the supposed 'one-way' track to win when I started my first game and took a completely different path. I concentrated on liberty bells from the start but still won. See this thread

Since then I have continued to use the same tactics at increasingly higher difficulty levels and and haven't lost a game yet. I'm playing Revolutionary now and if I do lose this one it'll be because of the damn Incas not the REF. :)

If you don't like fighting a long battle against a large REF then this strategy may not be for you. But it is still a successful winning strategy so there is more than one way to win.

It isn't a long war with REF that worries me. It is the slow, boring buildup to get to that point. Am I doing it wrong? Should there be more action while building up? Do I need to provoke the natives to get my thrills or somthing? I did try once attacking other European settlements, but they went down without a fight.

Well, that's the thing about colonizing - it's not all wars early. You can very easily play a game where you don't have a single battle until you fight the REF. If you're a warmonger, it's not the best game for you. If you like managing citizens and resources, then it's not so bad.

It isn't so much that I'm a "warmonger" but it woudl definately be nice if there was some challenge to settling the New World. Maybe some direct competition from other European settlers. Like in regular Civ you sometimes have to take some decisive action early on to secure a reasonable amount of land and resources to have any hope of being powerful later on.

War is part of colonization. When you take a people's land, you have to kill them. The Indians give up their towns/land way to easy in this game.

You can concentrate on your colonies, then lose at the end because the REF steamrollers you. Try putting 13 colonies on the coast where the Royal Navy can bombard your defenses to nothing.

You can play the whole game with an eye on the REF, and break for DoI in a hurry so REF is not too large. That's a little fun ... once.

The King of England never declares war on the French and orders you to fight too.

It just feels like an empty sack. Looks good from the outside, but not much to find when you reach in.
