Should there be an official Civ IV theme song and a cut scene for losing a well played game??

I lost my second but most contested game at emperor. :( I was doing absolutely great and diplomatic relations were off the roof with charlemagne, caesar, napoleon and bismarck. We shared the same state religion and whenever the AP vote came up to declare war on the infidels wang kon and hatty, i was just so happy to oblige. With the combined power of our armies made up of medieval units, we literally obliterated the heathens to kingdom come. I was able to expand my empire down south with my newly conquered cities. After the religious wars were over, I began building research and civilian infrastructure looking for an early and easy space race win. But when the AP vote for diplomatic victory came up things just crashed down on me. In a few turns, Charlemagne won the Apostolic diplomacy vote by a landslide even if i voted for the other candidate. I was stunned and sat there like a fool barely able to keep my tears from falling

Instead of reloading back to a couple of dozen turns to change the outcome, I kept my composure and just accepted defeat. It was to me a great and satisfying loss all the same.

I turned my winamp on to seek consolation in music and guess what, my player shuffled Coldplay's Viva la Vida. The tune's catchy (i know the music fundamentals of the song were [allegedly] ripped from one of satriani's masterpieces) but then I noticed the words to the song and how the song completely captures my own bitter demise as once being the greatest ruler of the world.

Here's the lyrics of the song:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sweep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Ohhh)

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh :king: :crazyeye:

So there...I nominate and vote for viva la vida as the future "civ IV (or V) loss theme song" should the game developers believe in rewarding points to losers like me for sheer effort. That way losing a well-played game wouldn't be so bad. :)

What's yours? :D

Heh... I find it amusing that your MP3 player selected that song at random after a Civ loss. There was a thread about that song here on the board back when it first come out. I suspect Chris Martin may be a closet Civver. (Can't you just hear Gwyneth? "Honey, when are coming to bed?" "Just... one more turn, luv..." )

Any of Queen's "We are the Champions", Tina Turner's "The Best" or Carly Simon's "Nobody Does it Better" would be wonderful after a win, as I'm sure most professional athletes and their fans would attest. Or even all three. :D

The song sounds appropriate for an honorable mention finish.

As for Queen music...

"I Want it All" for a conquest victory, "We are the Champions " for a domination win, something from the Flash Gordon soundtrack for a space victory, "Who Dares to Live Forever?" for a time victory, etc. Bohemian Rhapsody for cultural victory , of course.

yeah i bet chris martin plays civ too! i suspect he's not that good at civ hehe. Because how else would he have been able to come up with such a beautifully written song? A song about losing against the ai in an early AP diplomatic vote, as is clearly the idea behind "Viva La Vida", if it were not one inspired by chris martin's personal experience? jejejeje

"My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world"

@ Sisiutil

I found it amusing that the song was on cue right at that time of my bitter loss too. I can say I would never forget that game ever. I think i'm scarred for life. I won't ever take chances with adopting state religions! hmpf!

hmm. Sadly. There are not many songs about losing. Only this one, made just for me. :king:

ugh, that's a tough way to lose. I hate it cause it feels like the thing you're most powerless to stop. It just comes out of nowhere.

i know right? just right out of nowhere!

it's already been days since that game but still i find myself in constant need of a hug huhuhu.

I suppose "My Way" as performed by Frank Sinatra would do as a losing song.
Or, if the developers really wanted to rub it in when you lose, the game would play "Yakkity Sax" (you know, from the old Benny Hill shows) while displaying a message like "Ha Ha! Better luck next time, LOSER!".

If I remember correctly Viva La Vida was a reimagining of a classic depression-era song. I believe it was the same song that was written as Hoover's re-election song... but of course it was done sarcastically. Jajaja.

LMAO...:rotfl: :trophy: Winner idea

Glad you liked it.

What was that Billy Joel song.."Second Wind" ?

..".You're not the only one that's made mistakes,
But they're the only thing that you can truly call your own."
