I have never been in a game where the AI can build nukes. I am playing regent level. France is building the Manhattan Project. France is my only real competion left in the game. Will Joan use her nukes? She is furious with me, but we are at peace. Should I get her to sign a MPP. Will that help. I need to know what my next move will be. I think I will be able to beat her in the space race if neither of us uses the nukes.

Joannie may use nukes, you never know. A MPP doesn't help you. She only promises you to help you when you're attacked by another civ. You promise the same. This is not very pleasant, because you can get dragged into wars you don't want to get involved in. She could always attack you regardless of the MPP.

Since she's furious, it's difficult to get her on your side more. But trading may help. Or giving her presents, like the world map. Useless now, but it could help.

It's impossible to say. In my last game, France right next to me the whole game, and had an ROP and many trades. 6 turns before I would've finished the spaceship, she attacked out of the blue (not with nukes however). She only nuked me after I responded with my nukes.

However, I have played games where a civ declared war on me and their first act was to nuke my capital. The best thing would be to make sure you have discovered all the techs needed for nukes by the time she has discovered them. At least you can retaliate that way. Once you get the techs, set every good city to building ICBM's, and switch them over to spaceship parts when each time you get a new space tech. ICBM's make great pre-builds for spaceship parts, and if you end up building some, hey, they are nice to have around to retaliate.

Yay! A strategy I discovered all by myself being praised by a pro! Weee, I must be doing something right trying to learn this game then...

PS: I didnt mean I discovered the above strategy, I meant I found out anyway in the game before reading it here

Note to self - always pre-read your posts..

Thanks for the compliment, but I'm hardly a pro:). My best game ever scored at a bit over 3500 and that was my last game.

I started a new game late yesterday. I picked China, cause I'd only played as them once and gotten trounced. I built my capital, and when the borders expanded I saw a goody hut to pop near the capital. I popped it, and out popped 3 barbs. The first one slaughtered my warrior without losing a HP, and I had no reserve defense. I switched production from settler to barracks so I wouldn't waste many shields. They took all my money and knocked my population from 3 to 1. That meant I was losing money, and before I could change it, my barracks was sold off due to no money. That crippled me so bad that I missed several key city locations and ended up way behind on everything.

The closest civ was Greece. Hoplites are a ***** when you have only horses to attack. I attacked anyway, got one city, and couldn't take out size 12 Athens. I was about 30 techs behind and Greece was attacking me with Knights when I finally called it quits.

Pros don't do stupid stuff like popping goody huts near the capital with their only defensive unit. If I had 1/2 a brain, I woulda waited for my settler to build and pop the hut by settling near it.

I recommend not to use nukes if you can.the first who fires a nukes go to hell inmediatly and everyone declares war on him.
besides, the world will be like tattoine

Thanks for the advice. I am hoping to beat her in the Space race. I have a 3 tech lead. She has finished the Manhattan Project, but has since offered several lux for cash trades to me. Therefore, I think she will remain peaceful.

Sounds like a close finish. Those are always fun:). If it does come down to nukes, remember, nuke her capital city first, and her main resource cities after that (coal, iron, aluminum, uranium, etc). Nukes destroy all roads into cities, so if you hit Paris, most of her empire will go into disorder because luxuries no longer work if not connected to the capital. Keep tons of workers around, cause she will surely hit your capital first (don't leave workers inside your capital, leave them scattered around outside of cities). If she hits your capital, get a road rebuilt into the capital ASAP.

Also, if she does hit and you respond, try to get at least a few military units onto her territory. As long as you have any military nearby, her workers will hide in the cities and not repair her road links.

Hopefully, it won't come to nukes, but if you are going to use them, use them to maximum effect.

that's not always true. A few times i have gotten away with firing nukes and not having anyone else attack me and declare war.

Thank you for the nuke advice. I am hoping it will not come to that, but it is helpful to have a plan. Nuking Paris would be the first move of course, I had not thought of the strategic resources though.

well, maybe you're not a Stanlin like me

I think if you turn off space race victory and diplomatic victory the ai will get to build nukes more often.

I think you're wrong about this. I remember reading a thread a while back discussing the role of the capital in providing luxuries. Cutting roads to the capital will only cut off trades. Luxuries and resources connected to your network by roads or rail will still be effective.

Nuking the capital will thow them into disorder only if they've traded for a lot of their luxuries or resources. If most of that stuff is from their territory, they'll only be pissed.
