Ok I'm a bit of a newb, but do you guys think the Numidian mercenary for Carthagians is a little over powered 2/3/1 and all you need is bronze working. Is this some kind of bug because it is suppose to replace pikeman? I have Civ3 Gold ed 1.27f.

It costs 30 shields and normal spearman only 20 shields so it's not overpowered. That attack is useless BTW

The 30 shield cost makes up for the jacked up stats. I have many more problems attacking Greece in the Ancient Age than Carthage, due to the lower cost fo the Hoplite. The AI can rarely pump out enough of them to be truly effective defenders. Also, the attack isn't that great. Good for picking of a few units here and there, but not an offensive force to be reckoned with.

Well I used a force to take down my arab neighbours before swordsmen were available, it worked ok. Though I am only playing regent diff. Forgot about the shield cost. Seems fair now, but I believe the civilopedia says they replace pikemen.

They replace Pikemen, and for good reason; 30s 2.3.1 vs 30s 1.3.1!

While you should not fear to make opportunistic attacks with your Numidians, I'd never plan on using them as main attackers - Archers have the same AF for 33% lower price.

I never build numi mercs in the ancient age unless I want a GA. They are too expensive for what you get. I would rather have swordsmen or archers instead of numi. But once you get size 12 cities, then numi mercs are very good and if you use leo's to upgrade them to musket, you can pump a lot of these things out.

for PTW 1.27, I prefer to use France if I want those civ traits. I consider the Nums to be a disadvantage due to their cost.

I don't believe in ancient age ga's while in despo. I also like using leo's to upgrade numi to musket/rifle/infantry/mech inf.
