I think there needs to be some work put into the compatability with using these cards and this game. I am an owner of the 6800 OC. I've yet to have problems with other high end games.

It seems my computer just has trouble running any map larger than a standerd. and even standards don't run all to well.

I've got a pent.4 3.0ghz. 1 gig ram. 6800 OC. very nice system I must say.

I've noticed a lot of others having issues with Nvidia. ATI cards seem to be running the game fine(on a good system). but I could be wrong here. I'm not crashing, but things are pretty slow on those huge maps.

I suppose all we can do is wait and see if firaxis comes up with a solution to these nvidia cards. Although, i don't see this happening because there are so many factors that go into ones computers.

where do we go from here? I've read anough threads and I understand that even updating drivers, ect. aren't exactly doing the trick for the majurity.

thanks.

Could be that the game has issues with Nvidia cards. I know I have the same problems running an older (?) 5600XT on otherwise similar system. The part I'm not getting is the cards meet the system requirements listed on the box. It should run no problem. But it doesn't and nothing seems to help.

Shut off background process.....no help.
Update drivers.....no help.
Place game at higher priority....no help.
Vitrual memory setting to max....no help.
Defrag....no help.
Low resolution setting on graphics....no help.
Small map...no help (still lags and CTD unexpectedly)

In game, it seems to happen about the time gunpowder and railroads start to appear. The game runs fine until about then. Maybe it is linked to something that happens in the time frame. It is my only guess....

yeah im in the same boat. on standard maps the game works alright, it turns black on me whenever a wonder or religon movies pops up. i save reload and its good again but i have to do it more and more often as the game goes on. ive got the latest drivers have tried all the suggestions ive found on here to help. turning down the graphics level did help the map some and the patch did fix all the movies. im thinking about getting the 6800 since it has a setting just for civ IV to see if helps at all.

I have the same problem as you guys, and i think we are never going to get a patch which solves all problems. i don't get one thing : How the F*** can Gamespot.com give this game 9,4 of 10 when it doesn't work !!!

Mine doesn't.

Anyway, owners with ATI cards have reported critical bugs as well. While I must admit that I also see Nvidia cards everywhere, I really don't know if it's because of a very human tendency to see patterns in things, or if Civ 4 actually has more problems with those cards.

I have a Geforce 6600GT 128MB and the game runs quite ok for about 1.5 - 2 hours. Then it starts crashing. When I start my PC the next day I can continue the savegame for another 1.5 - 2 hours until it starts crashing again. I think in my case it is a heat problem. I monitored the CPU and mainboard temperature and these are ok, so this leaves my graphics card. I will now try to leave my case open and blow air with an external fan into it and check how long I can play. Somebody else did so, too and he had no crashes anymore.

At least for my PC this game is quite dangerous as it definitely heats it up very much. I already have an extra fan installed and never had any issues. Playing other games my PC never gets that warm.

BTW at first I also had jerky gameplay and black terrain. This I got fixed reinstalling the drivers for my mainboard.
