Obelisk & Library - Double Culture?

Earlier in my game, each of my Obelisks were producing 1 culture and each of my Libraries were producing 2 culture. Now, at 400AD, two of my six cities have Obelisks that are producing 2 culture and Libraries that are producing 4 culture. But when I mouseover the building name in the city screen, it says each is supposed to be producing 1 and 2 culture. One city is population 11 and the other is population 8.

Does any one have any idea what would suddenly cause the Obelisks and Libraries in these two cities to double their culture output?

Thanks!

1000 years have passed?

The mouseover text, like with the wonder obselescence thing in another thread, describes the base output of the building when it is not obsolete, which explains the discrepancy. The net culture value of buildings is increased over time, as it was in Civ 3, to represent the increased cultural value of ancient monuments etc surviving for many centuries.

All culture generating structures produce twice the normal amount of culture after they have stood for 1000 years.

Ah, that's right--I remember that game mechanic from Civ 3.

When I discovered Calendar, I thought my Obelisks would no longer generate any culture, even those that were generating 1 culture point. I guess discovering a tech that obsoletes a building only prevents one from building more of those buildings, not from realizing the benefits of those that were already built.

Actually, an obsolete building cannot be built and any effects (other than culture) are lost.

Kinda strange since obolisks do nothing but culture, so in a way, as long as you get one, I guess it never becomes "obsolete"

Since Obolisks are being discussed, I'll post it here...

If you build Stonehenge, why are all Obolisks are removed when calendar is researched? But if you build the Obolisks yourself, they remain?

Because the ability "a free obolisk in every city" is no longer active when Stonehenge goes obsolete. So your cities no longer have those "fake" obolisks

Dang it, all the games I played I avoided calendar as long as I could to keep the culture:p
Well, if those obolisks are from Stonehenge you should, but if they are real ones, then there is no point putting off calender unless you plan on building them in the future.

Don't feel bad, I did that too my first two games ;)

Yeah, I understand the game mechanics behind it, I think it's kind of silly for those Obolisks to just up and vanish. If it weren't for those early great person points I wouldn't touch Stonehenge with a 12 foot spear.
