Have you ever had or do you have obsession keeping cities?

I've now started third prince game in a row, just because two AI opponents have allways declearewd war against me at certain point of a game and usually got city or two captured. Now I just can't stand it! I load and load and load and try to play those critical ten turns even a week to still have those cities. But when it seems impossible, I'll explode and curse and start new game. I don't want or will lose any of my cities. I just don't know why it's so hard.

Actually, I think it is a good thing to occasionally lose a city. If you're not losing at least one city a game, it is probably time to bump your difficulty setting up a notch -- you've mastered your current difficulty setting. Losing a city now and then just lets you know you're playing on the right level.

Well it really depends
There was one time when I was like you, just quit the game when there was no way to keep the city
But now I've learnt my way, unless the loss is so drastic that have me totally flinged out of the competition, or that there is no possible way I would be able to defend my civ from ultimate destruction, I'll just let them have it, try to halt their advances, build up a gigantic army, and have my sweet sweet revenge
But then the chance that I actually lose a war is pretty slim, since normally my cities are so productive, the only reason that they could take my city is because I haven't pay much attention to building up military thus giving them a chance
But normally after the first war, I tend to have this mental flip over to emphasizing on military construction, therefore generally I was able to get my city back in 30 turns time

i was the same. i really hated when an AI captured one of my cities, sometimes i even quit the game.
but then i realized that it doesn't really hurt to lose one city (as long as you're not up to a occ or 3cc/cultural), you will either get your city back or conquer some other. if the enemy masses his troops at your city in the south, just conquer two of his in the north ;)

Quite true, this is threshold what I have to cross in my mind. I'd say this is battle of minds, can I keep my nerves and can I be better than computer. I face the problem and try to solve it.

Or then I'm just too possessive that what I've got with hard work and devious plans, I don't want to lose it.

Losing newer cities, or those I've captured isn't that bad. But one of my 'core' cities? No way!
And losing a city that was under cultural pressure isn't that bad either.
Just make sure they pay dearly in # of troops lost :)

Just whack on raging barbarians. That will help you get over your issues with loosing a city. Heh.

Aye. If you aren't losing something, you should be bumping it up a notch. But, you still have to go back to learn new tactics. I have working on my warmongering skills, something which I never did until Civ 4. I was always the one doing the tech race to space race victory, the easiest one, IMO.

So, if you only plan on playing one way, you should be forcing up the difficulty. If not, you should be forcing yourself into a different mindset and play style for awhile. :)

Losing is part of the game, and some you will. Just remember, in that moment of frustration at losing that city, to pause a second and learn the lesson as to why you lost it in the first place. :)

No, barbarians aren't the issue. Well they was until I realized to build units instead of obsolete buildings.

I used to have the same problem. It still really pisses me off, but i've realised losing (or the possibility of losing) is what makes the game fun and challenging. If you know you're never going to lose anything/worry about losing anything then it's just a countdown until you win.

Unpredictability makes life more exciting.

I always think I handled losing cities pretty well. I remember in a game of Civ3 (I'll admit, cities are more valuable in Civ4) I was reduced to 4 cities in a war. By the end of the game I had built myself back up to 24. I haven't had any major rebuilding phases so far in Civ4, but I know that losing cities isn't too big of a deal, unless it's a core city. I just promise myself sweet revenge on the bastard Montezuma, or Genghis Khan, or hell, even Gandhi, and try to build myself back up. I've never been a sore loser, either, so usually if I'm getting conquered I'll wait out the game until I've done all that I truly can do.

In my current (first time) Monarch level game, I moved 3 wounded units out of a city and let the AI have it and then retook the city a few turns later. It did not hurt the city very much and was a great battle tactic. First time I have ever abandoned a city.

If it's a city founded by me, then yeah I'm anal retentive about saving my people. If it's a city I captured from somebody else, then meh, especially if they put it in a crappy place.

I used to be like that, but not any more. I've found that some of my best games were ones where I fought back and won a war after being pushed back to the brink.

bizarre! i just stopped a game to get to work. i lost a city to a sneak attack and went ballistic. i retook it a couple of turns later, though. when i get home it's pay back time!

Loosing the occasional city is not so bad. But when the AI razes my capital that makes me mad. I don't get it why would they want to raze a city with multiple wonders in it? It's like they do it just to be disrespectful. Or I'm just egocentric.

I've had times where border cities were showing me a large stack of AI units on their way towards my city. Pre-flight I would generally leave a medic promoted unit as well as maybe two city defense units, and hope they did a fair bit of damage while some of my other untis withdraw. Strategic withdrawl can be a good thing, there are times where even if you left a full compliment of defenders you'd still lose the city.

Other times I'll cling to a city like a fat kid to the cake.

/shrug

I just bumped up a level to prince, I'm oing through the game and not really losing cities (maybe one, usually a captured one though) and most of the time win by time, i haven't gotten to the point where i can play not lose a city and just dominate, when i can do those three things then i'm bumping up to the next level

i look at it like: "i'll be damned if that !@#$!^ Cyrus is going to get one of my cities" pitty the poor bastard stuck between he and me.
