Occ

Persia and Germany have been duking it out too long and are both way behind the Dutch. The Dutcha re actually in a war with PErsia with Korea weighing in on the Dutch side (through MPP I think). I'm trying to keep a low profile and trade for techs that I can use for a wonder but the Dutch are a runaway on techs now and are building ToE. (I sound like a news report!)
Since I have no prebuilds possible, I'm getting some defensive rifles as they ahve no resources and am trying to rail while I have deals for iron and coal.

That inevitably happens, splunge. One city just can't keep up with other empires. Wth savvy tech trading (for things like Chemistry and Metallurgy) you can usually get to the industrial age okay, and then beeline either Industrialization (Universal Suffrage) or Sci Method (ToE) depending on how safe you think ToE will be.

Assuming you got the Great Library, it's usually a decent technique in OCC to just shut down research after Theology (or research Printing Press and then get almost all the way there on Education and then wait a bit and see). Then, with some cash in the bank, my preferred path is usually Education - Astronomy (grab Copernicus early enough and the research time to Shakespeare's is not much if any longer) - Banking-Demo-Free Artistry (for Shakes). You can usually trade along for the likes of Gunpowder and Chemistry from semi-backward AI, or if needed Democracy usually makes fine trade bait. Then onward to Newton's and hopefully trade for Metallurgy and maybe Magnetism, though it's likely that you won't be the first to ToG--but hopefully you can be first to Newton's.

Still, for a 20k win, most of the heavy lifting as far as culture is already done, and it's more a matter of keeping the AI from deciding to kick your ass.

I don't know your tech position, but it might actually work out as faster to get into the modern era, build the U. N., gift everyone 100 gold or so the turn before it finishes, and take a diplomatic victory. Not saying you want to or should do that, but it's a thought.

Thanks for your interest. I made a beeline for Shakespeare- should have detoured to Astronomy. Mathematically, I'll win by the time the game's over even ignoring doubled culture for old improvements. Just have to keep alive and avoid the AI winning. If I lose, maybe I'll replay not as OCC just for the cultural win.

Do old wonders give more culture (after ,what is it, a thousand years?)

Not just wonders, but all culture buildings the you've constructed (not gotten for free via the Temple of Artemis) double in culture after 1000 years. Well, the Palace doubles, and you get that for free, but that's the only exception.

Yay! I won my first cultural and first OCC! Not HOF material by a long run (I did reload for some stupid moves mostly involving espionage for techs I didn't need and for refusal to pay extortion).
It was fun and fast!

Might as well join the club. This string motivated me to try a 20k OCC--I had never done either before. I was tenterhooking about being able to keep out of the AIs' clutches, but once I got over that, things went pretty peacefully. I found that I could build up a nice little deterrent in my one city, funded on the proceeds of tech trading, if I truly needed it. Best of all, the game took only 7 hours to complete.

Of course, it was only a Warlord win, the histographic score was lousy, & I am now known as Theodora the Pathetic but what the heck

Congrats Snarkhunter. I found it was a lot of fun and realy got me thinking hard about my tech trades.

Congrats to General Meng too!

congrats, my first occ win was one regent, but ya, i was Hannibal the pathetic....
