Hmm...just finished researching Refining, so I figured I'd go look for some oil. So I looked. And looked. And LOOKED. But there's not one square with oil in the entire WORLD. (yes, I've explored it all) There's dozens on the coast, but NONE on the land. So...what do I do??

"Dozens on the coast"?

I don't get you... But any time the strategic resource is in an area you have cultural control of, you "own" it. Plunk a city nearby and put in some +culture items like libraries and temple and cathedral, etc.

I thought there were no sources of coal in one game until I attacked an AI player for access to aluminum. While pillaging some of their works I uncovered coal in a mined area! I assume oil could have the same problem, being "covered" by the mine cap.

Good luck with it. I'm off to try another game. :) I didn't get wiped up last time, but it wasn't a cakewalk either!

ctrl-shift-m

I was convinced there was no oil in the world. After I removed all the cities and improvements, there it was. . . RIGHT UNDERNEATH ONE OF MY CITIES!!!! I never would have found that in a million years.

If it was right under one of your cities then didn't you have access to it?

A few things I've learned about resources:

1) You don't need saltpeter to build riflemen
2) If you lose an undefended colony to barbarians the resource remains (you can rebuild the colony)
3) To benefit from a resource that is inside your borders you must have a road on the map tile containing that resource
4) Tires (aka rubber) looks to me like coal!
5) You lose your colony if it falls within the borders of another civ (if it builds a new city right next to your colony for instance)
6) You need iron and coal to build railroads
7) Iron runs out...

Not the coast, rather right OFF the coast, so that I still get the commerce bonus but can't use it as a strategic resource. Oh well, I just started a new game, it's not that big of a deal...

domestic advisor when you discover a new resource. She will tell you if you have any (and where it is), so you can then start looking around only after this fails. When I discovered Oil I was looking all over the place and then checked with the advisor and got the info that I needed!
