Just got ahold of a copy of Civilization 1 (There was a site on the internet that claimed Civ 1 can be termed "abandonware" and that because it is no longer sold -anywhere- not even from the manufacturer, it is free to distribute... any word on if this is legit or not?) When I load it up it gives me 3 options, for which I select VGA, Soundblaster, and keyboard + mouse. It then tells me that there is insufficient memory, it wants 8000 and there is only ~5470 (this number varies slightly) and suggests I unload TSR programs. If it is requesting conventional memory... isn't the max that can be available like 640KB? I tried cleaning up programs and tweaking with HIMEM and EMM386 (most of which I don't know what I'm doing) but it still says the same thing each time it starts. Suggestions anyone?

All our information here still says it is not legit. Civ1 is not abandonware. Just because someone says so for their own benefit doesn't make it so. You can still get Civ1 bundled on CD with other games though I haven't seen a Civ1-only CD for a while.

I have a machine reserved only for Civ1 and other similar old games. It's a 486/33 with 20Mb RAM and 200 Mb hard drive. I always select 1-1-1 for the options which gives me no sound but then it works just fine. Pity - I like the sound.
