i just got this game and its immpossible. its on the so called "easiest" mode but i cant make it past the 1970s without being invaded by a 6 country alliance against me. ive played 3 games so far and havnt been able to survive.
the "easy" mode is god damn hard...my science is way way behind, my army is very small and weak and all the other countries screw me over all the time. ive played civilization 2 and its so much better.....this game is too damn hard. i need a cheat program for mac to get everyone to leave me alone.

if someone knows of any mac trainers could you email them to me at DrwHem@yahoo.com

Read the manual that came with your game. It helped me move up to Warlord level after reading it. Try playing as Greece. 3 pt defensive units will help you survive most ancient period attacks. If AI attacks you and you don't have any offensive units, give everything you can offer to other AI for military alliance (golds per turn, all the golds, techs, and etc).

Giving away two techs for one AI tech might not seem smart but you don't have any choice. Is better for you catch up a bit than AI leaving you in the dust in tech race. Another strategy is to not use any gold on research and just buy techs from AIs.

Hi, welcome to the dark side (well it's always dark outside when I'm playing).

If you're making it as far as 1970 (I assume that's AD?) you are not doing so badly, but you probably need to do more of it, and do it a bit earlier.

I found that my game was transformed after I read a few posts around here. Look at the War Academy. If you can get a good early start it really pays off later, and Cracker's article on starting moves is a great intro to doing this. Getting a decent sized empire going early keeps the AI civs off your back, and you can start to take the initiative in deciding whether you want to go out ad slaughter them all or play a diplomatic game.

Trading, together with deciding when and whether to bother doing your own research is another critical factor. At the "easier" levels you probably need to research yourself, but as you move up (and you will, trust me) you can use the AI civs as your research labs until you outpace them.

Then there's the choice of units and buildings and wonders and where to put them. These are all decisions that can make a big impact on how fast you grow.

It's a complex game, and you really need to learn at the feet of the experts. Look for strategy articles by SirPleb, Moonsinger, Aeson, Cracker, Bamspeedy to name just a few in random order. Follow through some of these players' Quick Start Challenge time lines to see how they do it for real. These are detailed turn-by-turn descriptions of ther moves. You'll find them by tracking back through the Game of the Month threads. Another great learning ground is the Succession Games and Training Games forum. A sequence of players play ten turns each in sequence, and they write it all up and discuss their tactics and options in the forums.

Don't worry, you'll make it. Just forget about sleep and work for a while ;)

First, have you patched the game from 1.16f to 1.29_beta_2? If not, do so. In essence, if you're playing 1.16f, you're playing a different game than everyone here. So much has been fixed or improved w/ the 1.29_beta_2 patch. The link is here in the mac forum for the upgrade.

In regards to a cheat program, the chieftain level is the cheat program. :D ;) What you need to know about this level is that the AI civs have restrictions placed on their production and research rate. You have the advantage in thiese areas. Try to expand ASAP to 6 - 8 settlements, building barracks along the way. You really don't need temples early at chieftain, unless you're going after a cultural victory. Also, build offensive units. The AI is bullying you becasue its unit total out numbers your unit total.

I'm linking a regent level game that I've been playing in between GOTMs and SGs. It'll show you what structures are built in cities and what units are used in battle. Also note, the majority of my cities have only a single defensive unit protecting them. This is because they're my core cities, away from front lines, and I've got a rail system that allows for immediated reinforcements if someone was to land near such a city. Last thing, study the techs and put to memory what benefits each one brings. For example, Pottery will allow you to build granaries which will then allow you to expand quicker through building settlers. Also, build workers to lay down roads for commerce and military logistics. In the uploaded game, I'm Persia (Xerxes). Remember, if you're not patched to 1.29_beta_2, you'll not be abe to run my save file.

Persian Save file.

Compared to a lot of others on this site, I stink at Civ 3 and I've been playing for over a year...however, I love the game, win or lose.

Hang in there, read what the CFC experts have to say and more than anything else....keep playing!

well i finaly figured out that the best civilization is the aztecs so far. my first was the romans in the tutorial, my second were the greeks and my third were the english. my aztecs rule over everyone, it really helps that im only sharing a huge continent with 4 countries though...the other 4 countries are on separate little islands. jaguar warriors are sweet early on cause of their 2 moves a turn and so i had about 10-15 cities by the begining of the ADs. thanks for the tips though.
by the way im using an iMac OS 9. will the patch work on it?
