Where do you like to be positioned on pangaea maps? I most prefer to be put on the end of the continent, but I always end up in the middle somewhere. In my current game as the Russians, it's rather irritating - I'm right smack in the middle of the map, and all the civs to my West are small (the Germans were almost as big as I was, but got wiped out by all the other computers), but the three civs to my East (the Persians and Arabs were big - both are now gone) are huge, each about half my current size (after conquering 5 or so civs). I would upload a save of my current game, but it won't let me , as it's too big (the Autosave is 5.29 MB).

So a couple questions ...

1) Is there any particular advantage to starting in the middle or on the end of the continent?

2) Is there any way to have the game place the player's starting position at an end rather than the middle, or is it random?

Thank you.

I like starting on a coast because it's easier to consolidate your position.

First if you save the game manually the save will be much smaller and can surely be uploaded.

The locations are place at the start and cannot be changed. If you make the map via the editor, you can then place the start locations.

Start place matters if you are going for a special kind of win. IOW if you want to play a AW game, you probably do not want to be dead in the middle.

1/

If your In the middle then you probaly are going to have to militaristic about it, And you will see alot of war opportunities.

And being on a end of a continent. You will only have a few civ's borders, Less chance of war. Also the ocean nearby helps for trading early resorces.

2/ You can pick a Seafaring Civ, That Increases your chances of being at the end. Other then that, Just keep searching maps Intill your near the ocean.

One way to guarantee a coast start is to play a seafaring civ. :p Ok, so it's not the answer you wanted. I believe vmxa suggested the editor.

Given an ideal choice I'd prefer to be on a river about 3 or 4 tiles in from a coast. You can always build a coastal city close to your capitol, and it should become pretty powerful (given decent terrain). If your capitol is on the coast, you can't benefit from 1 or 2 nearby low-corruption cities on the side with water.

If you restart, looking for a near-coast map start, you can't tell east or west from the mini-map, but you can tell north or south. :)

Edit: x-post with lucashp

And it still won't let me upload . This one was a manual save too, not an auto-save.

I know coastal starts are better than inland ones. I wish I could get that save uploaded - it's 526 KB - because it has two good, if rather extreme examples of what I'm talking about. I guess a peninsular start is close enough to what I'm talking about. Where you're at the end the of the continent, and only have a couple of neighbors, like lucashp wrote, as opposed to being in the middle of the continent, with half-a-dozen.

Middle - you get to meet everyone faster, more trades, but you need to build 2 or 3 times more military and workers, since the chance the terrain will be desert or jungle is bigger, unless you get very lucky.

Coast - an early curragh will make contacts faster too...you don´t need that much military and can just grow and pressure your nearest neighbour, altough if you get no strategic resources nearby, you´ll have a hard time too, but its not fatal...

On your game i´d kill one of the corners with my offensive units and pin the other down on the center, and then do the same to the rest :D

In the middle by the coast is the best place if you ask me. Then you can take out either the left or the right side of Civs, and then you can have a central capital, and that will make it easy to conquer the opposite side. A start in between the middle and one side is also dang good for the same reasons.

Use the general Upload feature instead of attaching the save to your post. The link for it is near the top of the page, just under

Civilization Fanatics' Forums > CIVILIZATION III > Civ3 - Strategy & Tips > On Pangaea Maps ...

Once you've uploaded the file there, simply paste the resulting link in your post.

also access to a small island across from the starting position, just in case things get a bit rough. usually only happens when its on 70-80% water

I like starting near the coast but not on it. Also, I hate the center of the map (jungles are hell) or if I'm too close to tundra.
