It seems to me that Open Borders prior to 'Writing' should be the opposite, in that anyone is free go any where. Once writing is acheived (or maybe the tech should be changed to something else) then no civ is permitted to enter your lands (unless they grant you open borders)

I suspect the game logic (the designers logic) is pre-writing, when things were more or less tribal, home-territory were pretty well defended against intruders with a kill-first-loot-the-bodies-later attitude. Anybody who has watched a gang of chimps or young men who live in small towns/nieghborhoods can see this mentality pretty quickly as fighting starts because "they" came into our turf.

but I disabled open-borders due to the fact the AI doesn't use it well and it becomes a way of 1-turn killing the AI when the time comes.

I'm hoping for a mod/patch that changes Open Borders to only scouts/explorers, great merchants, and missionaries (maybe some ships), and changes the current Open Borders to "Military Access" giving access to all units. I want to be able to trade etc. without having the AI armies all over my region, or attacking another civ via my land when I choose to remain neutral. (It might also be a way to solve your "one turn killing" problem with the AI.)

that's really smart Arman, I'm not smart enough to make the code, but I betcha it can be done....it's all unit_class stuff which the AI likes in deciding how to do stuff. now all we gotta do is bell the cat and we're on our way to a handy mod.

How so? When war is declared all your units are moved our of their terratory before you could attack. It's not like Civ 3's RoP.

I had a drill instructor who told me the problem with assuming, whatdoyaknow the bassi'd was right....

I had disabled it because I got sick of every other turn the AI asking for the treaty, and assumed it'd be like civ3 where you could do remarkably bad thigns to the AI once you had the treaty in place....so it wouldn't 'hurt' anything. now i see I have just been robbing the AI of intellegence gathering resource with no benefit gamewise. oh well, I suspect they'll forgive me, and if not, I can find another 300 civs just waiting to take thier place *grin*

sometimes ya win, sometimes ya lose, and sometimes Victoria just rains on the whole game.

I completely agree with this. The main point is that trading between two civs needs to be separated from military access. The current system makes absolutely no sense.

I only know enough to mess around with the parameters in the XML files, so this kind of modding is way out of my league. Maybe one of the SDK/Python mod gods can swoop down from above and grace us with just such a mod.

(I think there was a long discussion thread about open borders/military access somewhere - but that was before the SDK came out.)

I think what should be relatively easy to do (read: I might be able to get around to it at some point) is to make it so that civs will have trade routes with eachother if they have cautious or higher relations. I would then take trading away from open borders and make it harder to sign open borders.

That would be great, Gunner. I'm looking forward to it!

I'd like to see that too.

I'd vote that military units should only be allowed transit when you have a mutual defense pact or vassalage with a country, or are at war fighting a common enemy. Face it, the US and Canada are friends, but their aren't Canadian Armed Forces wandering over the United States...

Open Borders should really be renamed Free Trade, with only non-military units being allowed transit within borders.

You're right - but we call them the Salvation Army.

P.S. Just teasing a bit, nice to see you guys are in danger of getting a more suitable military up North...
P.S.2. Quit buying second-hand equipment...
