Open game: Civ IV BTS custom game huge terra 18 civs Prince/Roosevelt

Turn 132:

I trained a scout and scouted the south. Got some heavy pounding from rabid animals, but now ok. Nothing but Ice down there. Some silver though.

I just ran into Kublai Khan who seems to be way southeast near the polar region. Not too good for him, as Charlemagne will occupy all the land to his north. No way to expand. I'm sure he will declare war at Charlemagne at some point. On the other hand he is bound to become a Buddhist and as such will have too good relations with Charlie the inferior who founded the religion. ;)

Nothing special in the diplomacy screen; we are all cautious.

I put a red square on the map where Kublai Khan is located. I think it is his second city - he is imperialistic so he would have one by now.

Washington will pop it's first settler in 1 turn. Then I'm going to build a warrior. Then a galley and a settler. 8 turns for The Wheel, then either masonry or meditation.

Turn 145:

I have put my scout to autoexplore, as I grew tired of the slow animations. The game runs sooo slow in window-mode. :(

Well, anywayz he ran into Wang Kong in the far north easter corner.

I looked at the diplomacy screen and voila:

Wang Kong is the one who founded Hinduism. Charlemagne and him are annoyed towards each other. So is Kublai Khan and Wang Kong towards each other for no apparent reason. Kublai Khan has not yet adopted any religion and they have a +1 in relations... weird.

None of them are connected to the trade network - that is weird too... are they all landlocked? Those fools! :)

I finished my first galley and sent it on a suicide mission to scout the ocean. That land mass in the NW turned out to be a large island and there is a tiny island to the NE of it. I'm going to look what is over there next, and if there is some more land, I'll put the Galley to autoexplore as well.

Got the wheel and now masonry is 9 turns away. I have used the whip once in Washington as it grew to size 6 and those unthankful citizens started to show signs of discontent. We can't have that in a democracy, so on with the whip!

Now I'm training another settler, then I'm hooking up those horses to train a chariot. The settler will go to the spot I have marked on the map, right next to New York. Then another galley, if the first galley finds new land.

After masonry comes pottery, meditation, and finally priesthood.

Turn 160:

Ok, a lot happening here right now.

I got The Wheel and masonry. Now going for pottery.

Ran into Justinian I just a couple of turns ago and lost my scout to a bear. I did not see Justinians cities anywhere, so it must have been a scout.

No one else has a religion yet, except Wang Kon and Charlemagne... and Roosevelt! Yes Buddhism has FINALLY spread to Washington!! Ou jee. :D

Now my ship has just reveled a red border to the north... wonder who that is?

I think I have deserved a break - going to the kiosk and pick up cigarettes and some beer...

Back to business! :)

Still turn 160... I just checked the diplomacy screen - we now have good relations with Charlemagne (both Buddhist) and as it was his city that spread the religion to ours, we also have trade relations now. Very good. :goodjob:

He just has not anything we want and he won't trade anything yet.

Turn 170:

The red borders int the north belonged to Tokugawa. Said hi to him. The next turn he demanded that we cancel our open borders with Wan Kong. I did that - Now He is mad at us for we are heathens and stopped trading. No big deal - he is far away and Charlemagne is his neighbor - who is also our friend. Somebody just founded Judaism - how exciting... bleh. :) We need monotheism though, I checked back to our original plans and we wanted organized religion. But there is time. Pottery is one turn away! Hooraa! :D

Turn 180:

Nothing much going on here. Got pottery and now researching meditation. Qin Shi Huang of the Chinese just stumbled with a scout from somewhere - he must be really far away. I checked the diplomacy screen and he has open borders with Kublai Khan and Wang Kon. And now me! He must have come form the far east - how peculiar for the chinese... :crazyeye: Jesus Christ Superstar this game is getting sloooooooooooooooooow.  Have to change to fullscreen soon.

Hello!!! anybody out there???

Aww... :( Nobody cares about the Americans anymore -sigh-. Poor Roosevelt is left deserted amidst these cunning civilizations. But fear not we pulled America out of the depression and won a world war. I think we can manage ;)

Ok, it is already turn 200 and this game is obviously a monologue. And it is running awfully slow in window-mode. So I'm going to finish it in fullscreen.

Was fun though, for a while...

You know, you said there would be room for advising, but you only give us like 15 minutes each time. This is way to short for anyone to give comments etc. Next time, give us like a day and then play 20 turns in a row (or more). What you are doing now is just spamming the forum with a monologue.

Do not feel sad, its just that people are not interested when they are not involved.

You're right. I was stupid to expect a huge audience and play the game in a row. Especially since I am in Finland and most of the peaple around the world are prolly sleeping when it is noon here. :)

That's it; no more monologues.

P.S. The game also sucked big time with all those 18 civs and a huge terran map on marathon speed. I got bored and did'nt finish it eventually. I will prolly play the next game on a large map with standard civs and an other map type. Maybe I'll also import some modded civs and play with one of them. :)

Domination would be very possible, but I don't know if Pericles would be the best for it.
Otherwise, I think you have overplanned, especially without already generating a map.
Why putting off Iron Working so late and wasting time researching up the Mysticism branch? Beeline to writing/alphabet, pop some Great Scientists and trade for techs you missed.

Like a friend said, CIV4 is not for winning after all, it is about building a pretty empire. Satisfying oneself :)
But anyway if we want to "win", we will follow a path.
First let me tell that I always play in huge world. I even sometimes use overriden map sizes with some downloaded scripts. About victory IMO,

Space victory: I did it a few times with pure peaceful scientific strategies. But I find it toooo easy and not enjoyable for BTS, as you finish the game earlywithout taking the joy of corporations much. That's why I generally don't allow that in my games.

Cultural Victory: This is also easy, and ends the game early.

Domination Victory: If you have 17 AI, it is long and boring to end with a domination victory. If you select 11 AI, more possible. Let's say you have 25-30% land of the world. I suggest you to fight with one of the other largest AI, and take over all its land. ıf that is still not enough than ally with one of the other largest ones. So the game will end earlier. If you have 6-7AI, it is shorter.

Conquest Victory: Not depending on AI number much, it would take veeery long time. I never tried it. I don't have time for this! As I am not a student...

Diplomatic Victory & the other one ( I forgot the name): I find this type, not enjoyable.
Time Victory: I don't accept this one as a victory. It is something like a sandbox mode, for me.

So shortly, I generally play with either domination victory with 6-7 rivals or cultural victory. Having 6-7 rivals instead of 11 makes the end of the game shorter. But I prefer like that. Let me explain more in detail.

As I don't want war to stiffle my economy, I generally only fight after I have tanks or infantry at least. With those units, I can eliminate a rival totally in 5 to 15 turns. After eliminating 2-3 rivals, and after reaching the end of tech tree, I'm satisfied. So I immediately want the game to end so as to start a new game. Starting a new game exciets me more when I reach that time. So I cannot wait no more.

Unlike Pericles, who was really a wussy and a coward. No one ever won a war by fancy oratorical skills... or bribery or patronizing the arts (although he constructed the PArthenon)

The greatest thing Peri did for civilization was democracy, then Parthenon. In Abraham Lincoln's words "government of the people by the people for the people"'.

Actually screw Parthenon. It is a building. It was democracy, which was established first. The first time in history the power was shared amongst 30,000 free men, all treated as equals (http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/greeks/greekdemocracy_03.shtml). No Kings, nor rulers.

Too bad slaves still existed, but for the first time, they had the right of their own enterprise, and could even become free men, if shew valor in battle, or contributed high community service.

Women were also excluded, but we cannot judge the world of 500BC with today's standards. Women had many rights comparing to other communities (with the exception of Sparta, where women enjoyed many rights).

As for coward hell no! Peri preferred to remain faithful in his believes, and even lose his generalship than betray them.

If you like military achievements, I will remind you for as long as Pericles was in power Athens was winning the Peloponnesian war with Sparta - Spartans even offered negotiations in Athenian terms. Fool Athenians refused! Even worse stripped Pericles off his power! No wonder, why they lost...

Pericles attempted to seize a "cultural victory" over Sparta. He knew Athens was the dominant power of his era. Therefore, refused to battle Spartans in their strengths in the land, and opted naval engagements, where Athenians were stronger.

Most strategy critics believe his strategy would eventually lead Athens to a marginal victory. As Spartans would never be able to beat Athenians, or seize Athens. Unfortunately, those succeeding him lacked his abilities and character. They attempted to meet Spartans where Sparta was stronger, in the land. Then turtle like p... inside Athens.

While Pericles was in command, Athenians were constantly harassing the coasts of Peloponnese, not letting the Spartan army to lay a siege at Athens, in fear of counter attacks in their lands.

Which version of history is this? Read something here...

Domination can be achived relatively easily, till the Noble mode, with almost all the leaders. From this point and up is getting much harder

Think I just saw this for the first time - coastal, with Roosevelt, and what appears to be another landmass northwest? Sailing, lighthouse, GLH, build as many coastal cities as you can, win.

That's the winning play for a coastal roosevelt imo. If this had been an epic or normal game, I'd probably have shadowed, but marathon is too long for me.
