I like how Andu Indorin named his opening move for his timeline the "Philosopher King's Monarchy Variation", kinda like in chess, where you have the Queen's gambit, open Sicilian, etc.

Well, post your opening moves here, and give it a creative name.

I press b unless im on a mountain or something bad, i build two settlers and place them on shielded grass preferably.

These two build two, then temple then militia.

And the next four do the same.

I go for monarchy, then philosphy/republic, pick up masonry/pottery, then go for democracy and invention.

I call it the... The canadian way. ( lol )

My personal way is known as:

Aristotle's Toot Toot with a Dem Big Musket

This is because i go all out for philosophy ( and Colussus of course for SSC), then Gunpowder and Railroad in rapid succession.
Whilst others flounder about with,.., I dunno, Polytheism or something, one just does the medieval equivalent of going nuclear.

Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you.

I NEVER build on grass, diamond or not.
If I can't build on a river, I'll build in the forest.
I also like mountain cities, if there are specials to help. Awesome defense.
Depending on map size, Bronze/Horses, path to Monarchy, path to Chivalry, and see from there.

oops forgot to name.
How about SlowwHand's Sojourn ?

I call it Expansionist's Feast
I build a city on a spot that guarantees ar least 4 food/turn. Build an explorer (warrior), then a settler, which will build city on another fertile spot. Repeat, don't stop 'till barbarians or other civs start showing their ugly faces...

Though my strategies do vary from game to game, I open every game with the same move . . . I call it pressing the B key!

I press the 'b' button unless I'm on a mountain of a swamp or something. Its best not to waste any time in the begginning. The game really gets started around turn 15 or so.

I call my opening move: 'Make dang sure I have no living neighbors.'

------------------
"What do we want? Tickets to the Met, Broadway, the shops, civilization, man, that's what we're looking for. Oh, we may stumble along the way, take this fellow for instance. . . *BLAM*
Now was that civilized? Fun, yes, but in no sense civilized."

I call it build city.

Build warriors

Then build settler.

Then build city.

New city builds warrior (or phalanx)

New city build settlers

As soon as first city produced three settlers (two for other cities, one for terrain improvements), begin other things, like improvements(library), or maybe a wonder.

I usually build pikemen when Bronze Working is available, because on Raging Hordes the Barbs can kill Warriors easily. As soon as it becomes availabel, I send the Warriors out exploring, or disband them to aid production of their replacements.

The irrigators of the Civ world.
Build a city, build a settler, start working that land.

Actually, the "Openings" refer to initial research programs. I have distinguished five characteristc such openings based on the first 10 to 15 techs researched and the principal goal these reseach programs pursue. I've named them: the Warrior King's Opening (war); the Philosopher King's Opening (happiness); the Merchant Prince's Opening (trade); the Ancient Mariner's Opening (exploration); and the Natural Philsopher's Opening (science).

My research, I do a few things.

Get pottery so I can build pyramids as soon as Possible.

Then I go either straight for Gunpowder or straight for economics.

WoWs to pursue: Great Wall; King Richard's Crusade; Sun Tzu's War Academy;
Rationale: You believe science is best pursued by conquest.
MidGame Objectives: Gunpowder, Metallurgy, Leadership

Philosopher King's Opening (12 advances)
Alp,Cer,Mys,CoL,Wri,Lit,Rep,Phi, --> Pot,Hor,PT,MT
WoWs to pursue: Great Library, Hanging Gardens, Oracle, Michaelangelo's Chapel
Rationale: Happiness and Population Growth will lead to a bigger civilization, which will be more able to dominate other civilizations in the later game.
MidGame Objectives: Democracy, Sanitation, Explosives

Merchant Prince's Opening (13 advances)
Bro,Alp,Cur,CoL,Map,Wri, --> Tra,Lit,Rep,Bank --> Ast,Sea,Nav
WoWs to pursue: Colussus, Lighthouse, Magellen's Voyage

MidGame Objective: Economics, Magnetism, Democracy

Ancient Mariner's Opening (10 advances)
Alp,Map,Pot,Sea; --> Cer,Mas,Mys,Mat,Ast,Nav
WoWs to pursue: Lighthouse, Magellen's Voyage

MidGame Objective: Magnetism, Steam Engine

Natural Philosopher's Opening (13 advances)
Alp,Cer,Mys,CoL,Wri,Lit; --> Mas,Phi,Mat,Bro,Ast,Univ,ToG
