Sorry if Stupid Question:

What's the affect of the optimal city number? Are there penalties if you go above it?

Thanks

If you found more cities than your optimal city number corruption will begin to become really bad

OCN decides corruption but it also decides when you can build an FP. An FP increases your OCN and acts to reduce corruption through OCN.

So how bad does corruption get, and how many cities are optimal on tiny maps?

Corruption can get pretty bad.

OCN on a tiny map is 14,
Small:17
Standard:20
Large:28
Huge:36
but this is modified by difficulty level.

Chieftain: 100% of OCN
Warlord:95%
Regent:90%
Monarch:85%
Emperor:80%
Demigod:70%
Deity:60%
Sid:50%

So there you have it;)

Once you exceed the OCN is the extra corruption in the extra cities (the ones above the OCN) or on all cities?

Thanks

It starts affecting the cities over the OCN. Your core cities remain unaffected. BTW, note that the Forbidden Palace ant the SPHQ each increase the OCN by 50% so make sure you build them.

Thanks ibhhh

I will play on tiny deity settings from now, so that means under 9 OCN (but i don't care - I go for conquest)

Frosty :)

You're welcome.

Have a nice game.

I wish to thank Ibhhh for providing the list of how OCN is modified with respect to difficulty level. However, I have some questions concerning the effect of Forbidden Palace (FP) and the Secret Police HQ (SPHQ).

Let us say that we play a game on Chiftain level, just to make our calculations simple, and that the game is using huge map. According to the Civ3Conquest Editor, the OCN is then 36. Would this mean that for the Huge World Size, the ONC is 36 without having available FP and SPHQ, and that FP increases it to 54? Or is ONC rather 18 for the Huge WS and that FP increases it to 36? (I think that this was the case in the original Civ3 game, before there was expansion packs)

Could you, please, tell me more about the effects of FP and SPQH?

Regards,
Alex

The FP increases the OCN by 37.5% (3/8), not 50%, except in Communism. In Communism, the FP and SPHQ increase the OCN by much more (150% each).

Also, the OCN is not a hard limit. You get OCN corruption from the moment you build your second city. It's just that the rate of increase with number of cities doubles when you go over the modified OCN.

Everything about corruption

So does this mean that on a huge map on chieftain with a communist government, SPHQ and FP the OCN is 144?

(1+2+3+3)*36=324, actually. :)
(My 150% figure, above, was off)

Of course, rank corruption works differently for Communism (all your cities affect corruption in every other of your cities, so it's not quite as good as it sounds).

However, it's easy to see why Communism is so good for large empires in C3C.

Care to explain that part a bit more? Where are the number coming from? ANd waht is the exact increase to OCN in communism if 150% is in fact incorrect. Thanks for any clarification.

See the formula in my article.

1 is for the map OCN
2 for Communism
3 for the FP
3 for the SPHQ

Great. Thanks for the info.

If I understand correctly, the exact increase to OCN in Communism is 300% for each relevant Wonder.

For Huge map where Commercial trait is ignored the formula,

OCN * (1 + c + Gr + Gp*Nwe)

gives this:

(1 + 0 + 2 + 3*2)*36 = (1 + 2 + 3 + 3)*36

[c=0 because Commercial trait is ignored, Gp=3 because of Communism , Nwe=2 because of the presence of both FP and SPHQ, and OCN=36 because of the Huge map]

Yeah I had got that. Thanks. I made a little excel sheet so the OCN calculation can easily be made. You just input the variables in the cell where they are required and it calculates the OCN for you. Thanks to Alexman for the formula.
