Hello everyone.

I'm brand new to the ladder, and am absolutely thrilled to find such a group exists. I LOVE Civ.

I know that ICQ is the ideal place to organize games, but this game would take a little more planning than your avg duel. To make such a large game sucessful I'm looking for individuals who would be willing to commit to an agreed upon time to play each week. This game could take a good while to complete but I think it would be ALOT of fun. Imagine the diplomacy and trade possibilities not to mention the war (alliances could bring on a world war

). Though the winner would achieve a victory, such a large game offers more than the chance for a point. It would be intended mostly for fun.

If you would seriously consider taking part then please email me at mattceloria@hotmail.com or my ICQ is 48547459. When everything is ready I'll email the participants to determine a mutual playing time.

Now games like this may be common for all I know, but this has been my "Civ dream" since I was a wee settler. If anyone has comments or questions please respond.

God bless you guys.

I would like to express my interest...i would like to comment that connection speed is important too!

I'll be in contact by icq...

I am interested in the same thing, a large game with a CHANCE of finishing. But...

As Kitty said, connection speed is important, but I never have too much trouble moving games along with my 56k.

I will be in contact also

Thanks for your response. Does a slow connection simply slow down play time for the individual or everyone involved?

Either way thank God for cable modems.

*waves goodbye to dial-up*

This makes 4 potential players as of now. Hopefully we can get this worked up, and please by all means, tell your comrades. You guys proabably know many more civvers than I do. Any recruiting you could do would make this much easier.

I guess I'm in too .

Yes a good connection is very helpful, but is not essential. What is essential is reliability and compatibility of time zones.....and I hate to rain on everyones parade, but organizing a game between an american and a bunch of euros will be very difficult, unless one side or the other is very flexible.

I'd love to play, but I'm afraid I'm not available for another game right now, as I already have one going.

Good luck though guys, hope you can work everything out!

Yes he is right about time zones...

so! Who is flexible in here?
(I presume the game will be american so euros will have to stay up late)

Well, it seems to me that I'm the one who will have to be flexible. If most of you live 7-10 hours ahead of me then we can find a time that is managable for me but most convenient for you.

For instance, if you played later in the evening, say 8:00 p.m., it would be 10:00 a.m. for me. I could do that. I'm sure there will be times we can all agree on playing. If someone is unable to match their schedule we'll just find another person who can.

Realistically, we'll be doing well to get over 3 hours in a week. It'll take a while. But as people begin dying out the process will speed up because there will be less people to build the play schedule around.

Please keep posting. Let's do this.

Well in that case let's bring people from ICQ too!

I have watched with keen interest how Drake's game has progressed (At Apolyton), and have determined that it is practically impossible to keep a game going

Really, you have to have people willing to play AFTER they realize that they CANNOT win. That is a hard sell for most, plus there is little leeway in time. If a player is not there at a certain time, then he or she is not playing. And that pisses alot of people off, especially when those few turns ran by the AI screw all of their plans up.

In the end you need a bunch of people who are willing to play the game for the fun of it. It will be fun, but sometimes frustrating.

As for the time zones, I think if you get enough people interested, that shouldn't be a problem. But I also warn you that it will be VERY hard to get a cohesive group together, even with the best interests at heart.

With that, I will tell you that I will play in your game, BUT I will probably only be able to play for about two months before I will disappear from sight for awhile
wink.gif
. Then about a month later I'll be back.

I don't have any problem letting my Civ go to someone else, as long as you can continue your game.

so far if Kitten, Az, Fox, and myself play we are 3 short. I spoke with one person over ICQ who said they were interested but I really don't know what kind of player he is.

For something like this we'd need advanced players who would take it seriously. BUT like Drake said the bottom line is that this game would be played for fun. Winning and losing would be fringe benefits.

PLEASE, guys like you, Az, get in touch with gamers that you know and see if anyone is interested. I don't know anyone. The people that you've played with are more likely to be the type of person we'd like involved in the game.

One thing we shoudl start deciding on are the rules. Here are my suggestions:

1)Play King (don't really know what's best)
2)1X troop move 1X resource
3)Formal alliances allowed (perhaps only after a certain date, like AD 1000)
4)Bloodlust
5)Random map (medium sized)
6)Wonders allowed
7)Caravans allowed
8)Embassies allowed
9)No bribing of cities or troops
10)No technologies traded unless formal alliance.

There may be some serious problems with some of those suggestion. Post what you think.

People keep up on our game huh? Thats cool

Anyway, you're right fox, it is damn hard to keep a long term game going. You have to have the right combination of players. They need to be patient, reliable and 100% dedicated. Also, having a "sub list" for when someone can't show is key. Communication between players is essential. If someone can't show, drop a message somewhere, don't leave everyone hanging out to dry. That pisses people off. Also, don't start a game that you know you can't finish. It's not worth it, really it isn't.

If you can get 7 people (in different time zones!) to get together every week for a few hours to play civ, believe me, you've done something that's very difficult to do in the civ world. If you can do it for a whole game, you are among a select few.

I played an entire game (until 1911) with 4 players earlier this year and it was great fun. Also, with 4 people, things were much easier to coordinate than this 7 player I'm in now.......so that's something to think about....consider playing with less than 7, it might be worth it.

I would love to join this game. I play Civ a lot and should have no problem finding the flexibility to play.

I agree with all these rules but I just don't get the last one...
"10)No technologies traded unless formal alliance."
What's the purpose of that?

Perhaps we should aim for less than seven players. The game won't take so bloody long and will be much easier to coordinate. If we decide to go with 4 players would we want to use AI? Also, a smaller map would be helpful in bringing civs in contact earlier.

Anyway, if we only want less than seven people we could start this game up this week. The time that is best for me is Saturday (morning in America-afternoon in Europe).

Oh, Az, what I meant is that we should not be allowed to trade technologies with each other unless we are formally allied. Allies should be able to trade technology because they are sharing everything in common. BUT alliances would only be allowed after a certain date or upon the construction of a specific wonder. The reason I suggested this is so that civs that happen to be closer to other civs early won't have the advantage of trading tech before others do and getting a jump on every one else. Alliances would be a "modern" strategy only. In the Ancient and Medieval world it'd be every one for themselves.

ok I guess modesty is always helps. 4-5 players is ok...

Ohhh

well if we say : no tech trade before 1000 BC it would be ok.

I would be willing to join this game. I have plenty of flexibility on the weekend, but I am toast during the week. If you need a player to play regular, or to sub for a no-show...just let me know.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result...

I would be willing to sub for a no show, if I am online & have enough "play-time" to do it. Call on me .. if you need to. I am flexible about the civs I would take. I think that the suggested no-trading house rule is strange..& will not add much to the game. The non-bribe house rules are not really necessary either.

The giaman is in, but only if it happens on the weekend. just to let you know that I have tot in case that is a problem, let me know on ICQ add my name to your contact list and I'll O.K. it
