I know this is only tangentially related but what are some resources for figuring out which video cards work as upgrade for which macs? I have a feeling that because my current monitor has an ADC connector that my options are going to few and far between in addition to being expensive.

Hello, welcome. I think video card upgrade is well within the scope of current discussions.

You can get a DVI to ADC adapter, though depending on what screen you have, by the time you pay for one a new screen may be more cost effective.

Google is the best bet. Enter "Mac video card upgrade" and you get a wealth of hits. If you include your Mac model then it'll narrow the results down further. Or mention it here and maybe someone has already done the research for that Mac.

What mac do you have? I am also looking at upgrades. Tell me what card you currently have and which mac you have, and I can give you some help.

Thanks, I've got a first series dual 2.0GHZ G5 and I believe that it has a Radeon 9600 64MB in it. If a DVI to ADC adapter is $90 then the $150-200 price for the Radeon 9800 256MB does not seem so bad after all.

If yours is the first series, is it PCI X instead of AGP? This is important to know before you do anything else.

And you're right about the price of the adapter. You could sell your current card and the adapter separately on eBay for about 120-150 bucks. This almost covers the cost of the upgrade.

It is an 8X AGP slot.

The game arrived today and the game defaults to 1024x768 with details set to low and it runs well through the early and mid-game on a normal sized map that I'll probably hold off on upgrading. A slow end game may change that.

I played the game on my friend's PC... it was so gorgeous compared to the way it looks on mine.... almost worth a better video card.
