Our Galley was lost in Treacherous Waters

What is the chance of a Galley going down in treacherous waters? I'm trying to get a 3 move Galley across a 5 tile stretch of open water and I've tried 7 times, each time I lost my Galley.

The Americans however can traverse the ocean squares safely despite the fact it is well before Navigation or any other advanced seafaring tech. Unless they are extremely lucky that is.

I was doing alright on Warlord but I'm slipping back now. Once again I am well behind in tech, military and score - even though I've got a really good start this time.

I think their is a 50% chance it will sink per square you move into so the odds after even 2 squares are not very good unless you get very lucky.....dread:nuke:

Remember, there are 3 types of water tiles to contend with.
Coast
Sea
Ocean

Once Astronmy is discovered you can travel safely over Sea, as well as trade over Sea. The Great Lighthouse enables safe travel over sea tiles as well. Perhaps it is sea tiles you are seeing the Americans travel over with impunity, and they have Astronomy or the GL??

You need Navigation or Magnetism to travel safely on Ocean tiles.

I am pretty sure the odds of your galley sinking in sea tiles pre Astronomy, (or Ocean pre Nav/Mag) is 50%.
You flip your coin and take your chances. ;)

I've had as many as 7 in a row sink trying to make a 1-turn transit. That's the worst, though, so maybe your luck is about to change. :)

According to Soren at Firaxis, the AI won't attempt unsafe water crossings.

A simple question - but a puzzling one for me:

Is there a hidden bonus for higher levels concerning the probability with which galleys sink?

Example: last game, 1 Galley was at risk in ocean for 4 turns consecutively, another for 2 (Turns 3 & 4 of the first), another for 1.

None sank until turn 4 - then all sank.

What makes me wonder is: on turn 3 I gained contact to 1 other civ, on 4 I met all remaining ones (through the galleys and trade).
I had been on an island with another civ I killed earlier.

Now this is somehting i alos see the AI do - the one isolated guy has remarkable success with suicide galleys.

So: are the mechanics of sinking as advertized or is there something in it that makes it easier for 'lonely' civs? I

the probability of a galley sinking does not change according to difficulty level. further, the ai never sends its galleys on suicide missions. if you see them seem to get lucky and survive, it is because they have the Lighthouse/Astonomy for safe travel over seas or they have Magnetism/Navigation for safe travel over oceans (these techs affect galleys...)

Galleys are able to sail freely in ocean squares without risk of sinking once either Navigation or Magnetism is discovered. This applies both to the AI and the human player. Also, galleys can sail in sea squares once Astronomy is discovered. There are no special rules governing AI ships.

I've encountered it a couple of times before, usually with galleys on sea squares more so than on ocean. It's certainly not as regular an occurance as some others have claimed, but it does happen.

In any case, I just figured that if the AI has access to knowledge of the placement of all units on the map, it may very well have 'prior' knowledge of the random number string when considering it's moves.

the only time the AI will ever have a gally end its turn in a sea or ocean square is if it has the tech which allows it to do so without risk of sinking (Astronomy for sea; Navigation/Magnetism for ocean)...

maybe I should add this to my sig?

Being isolated is not a killer by itself. You may need to go ahead and pay Lincoln the exorbitant fee to get contacts. The sooner the better, to get yourself into the tech trading game.

You can also build up your cities so they'll be ready to pump out troops for an extended period when you do get off the island.

It's supposed to be 50%, but it may seem like 10 to 20%. Keep in mind that the 50% chance applies to each galley, not the sum of them, and that the RNG doesn't have memory.

I've had galleys survive six or seven turns on the high seas. Of course the other six or seven galleys sink on turn one or two.

i can never get em to travel teh seas anyway

I have made it 9!!! TURNS through the Ocean and found a new continent. I thought it was a bug since I just downloaded Snoopy's Terrain. It was not a bug;) I was just soooooo lucky !

Hmmm so the AI will never attempt to cross ocean/sea squares if it doesnt have the tech. That explains a lot. I've had games where the AI is only seperated from another continent by one or two ocean squares which they could easily hop over with a 3 movement galley yet they never did until navigation.

i blocked off te japanese from further exploring north america by cutting their gallery off with 2 cavarels. The gallery could have simply wasted 1 movement waiting for the next turn and skipped accross but because i never traded map with the poor poor japan they might think that there are still ocean squares after my cavarel
