I was wondering whether anyone has been able to pre-order Civ4 on CD-ROM in Australia. All I can find is DVD-ROM. I don't have a DVD-ROM player and I'm not planning on getting one unless I absolutely have to! Any help would be appreciated :)

I'm afraid its time to upgrade - Civ is pretty Big - and more and more games are now dvd only (hey - its like only 25 UK pounds for a DVD writer - hardly gonna break the bank)...

I think the last 7 games i've brought have been DVD only ...

I hate to be a jerk, but I am in the opposite boat. (I am by no means rich btw, not even close)

I am getting tired of switching 3-4 CDs through a DVD drive that I have had for years.

The sooner everything comes on one DVD, the better.

EDIT: I apologize ahead of time if DVD drives are more expensive where you live or any such scenario.

So far in the international pre-order list I've only found one Australian site that has pre-order - and that doesn't seem to indicate CD or DVD - but if you have more, let me know. It seems there's a lot of confusion as to whether the game will be on CD or DVD. The US will surely have CD, but in EU I've seen a lot of mixed box art and no solid statements.

Once you start getting into the business of putting in your details at this site, it becomes apparent that what you'll be getting is Civ4 on DVD-ROM. That's in fact what prompted me to start this thread :)

Just rang my local Electronics Boutique (Cairns); they have release date 3 Nov. and DVD-Rom listed :(

Not that their info. is always correct mind . . .

edit
Civ4 _ _ _ $89.95
DVD-Rom_ $41.00
Playing the best installment of the franchise in 2 weeks time . . .

Damn. I might just wait till it physically hits the shelves in Melbourne. If it's DVD-ROM I'll just stop by an electronics store and get a player as well. Apparently EB games will hold a copy for you for a small deposit...

I picked up a DVD-Rom driver or whatever it's called for about 35 bucks CDN At Future Shop so I could play Settlers Heritage of Kings. Good buy dont rember who made it or any specs on it but it works great.

I pre-ordered on EBGames, so I'm getting the 4 CD-ROMs I think. I'm in the exact opposite situation. I have a DVD-ROM that I almost never use (I mean I can't watch movies on the computer sorry) which I want to use. But instead I'm going to get 4 CD's! :(

Did you pre-order though their website? Do they have a website?

i have the same problem willowmound, you can only get civ4 on dvd-rom in australia apparently, at least this seems to be the case. I'm going to see what happens when it gets here but i have found a number dvd-roms that range from $37.95 to $39.95 AUD, but i'm holding off getting one until the situation is more clear.

On a related note. Is this game going to come with Starforce copy protection?
If it does I won't be buying it until I get a new DVD-ROM drive...my 2001 or so drive does not like Starforce:(

Well it's official: You (and I) will need a DVD-ROM player! Better get used to the idea, and just go get one I suppose... :-/

Official system requirements listed on the CFC homepage.

Oh..I have the dvd-rom drive, but the starforce copywrite protection does not like some older dvd-rom drives..if it doesn't have starforce protection I'm o.k.

Australia is a PAL territory and serviced by the European distribution chains. As it seems that Europe is getting only DVD, looks like we will only get DVD here in Aus.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I noticed you can buy the game on Ebay.com.au for AUS$66.95, and it is the CD-ROM version. See here.

However, I am not sure of the downside of buying the game this way.

Edit: spelling

Unfortunately as official as those specs may seem, they are not necessarily correct when it comes to the CD / DVD choice when there is no message that indicates for which release these specs are correct. It has been widely established that there will be a CD version in the US (they're not behind there, are they?). If it's true that Australia follows the EU release, then it's likely that DVD is required in Australia.
