P2P Client Question

I have this question. When you choose to download a random file on KaZaa, in some cases, you can manage to get the html address from where your client actually downloads from. Which means I have tried to copy and paste into DAP and then click "Download". It works just fine, apparently - UNTIL, the download reaches the same size as the file inside KaZaa, which means that the download speed decreases to the same level as KaZaa. Why can't it just go on until the file's been downloaded, what makes it stop? And is there any way to bypass this?

KaZaa's download speeds irritates me, especially when you're sitting with a broadband connection - you still dowload with 56k speeds. But when you switch to DAP, speeds increase to 500-1000 kb./sec!

KaZaa uses a central server (or better more than one) to distribute the necessary P2P data between uploader and downloader. And it tags a person a certain speed with which he can upload, or better a certain rank.

Most people on KaZaa have a rating of 0. This means that whenever there is more than person downloading a certain file from an uploader, the ones with rating 0 only get what remains of the bandwidth. The higher your rating, the more bandwidth is dedicated to you. Unless you are the only person downloading, you will never get anywhere near the uploaders bandwidth limit, though. :yeah:

What you experience is related to another feature. The speed you experience is not refering to an actual download, it is "downloading" the file from your own comp. All internet connections share or can access a certain tempory download file. In KaZaa´s case, you can see the DAT files in the download folder.
When using the browser to download the same file as KaZaa is downloading (as long as they can both access the temp files on HD or in memory), the browser will not download the same file from the web again. It will just use the temporary copy instead. And that of course stops at the point KaZaa reached when downloading the file. :mischief:
It´s the same you can experience when downloading pictures or smaller movies.
For example go to the CFC main page!
Then click on a screenshot and let the picture load. Then use right-click to save the pic. You will see that it saves immediatly, you probably won´t even see the download box.
Now go back to the main page and right-click on ANOTHER SOTD. Select "Save target as..." and save that, too.
Unless you are very fast you will get the download box and see it download within a few seconds. ;)
In the first case, IE or whatever browser, saved the SOTD once you loaded the pic in Temp. Internet Files or another temp directory. When you save the pic, it will NOT download it from the web, instead it will copy it from the temp directory.
In the second case it will download it from the web as it has no copy of it in the temp directory. (so select a screenshot you have not looked at recently :p)

That´s the same principle, the 500-1000kB/sec is not your actual download speed. In fact most web servers do not allow such a bandwidth for a single connection. It displays the speed it copies from the temp file instead.

So, to answer your question, to get a better download speed at KaZaa, first increase your ranking by letting people upload from your comp. And for downloading, order your search results by bandwidth and select the highest before clicking download.
:D

Okay, thanks, Lucky! :)

Although, I must say that I got just a little complicated! ;)

Hmm, the ranking thing seems to be a new thing, or what? Well, it's bad, because I hate sharing that kind of stuff with people. :D

But thanks again.

Hehe. ;)
I just started writing and it somehow didn´t want to stop. :mischief:

Since KaZaa only exists as long as people share, this system will stay intact and you have to put up with it.
:D

Are you sure that Kazaa uses the windows temp directory? The reason I ask is because when I.E. uses the temp directory it keeps the file that is downloading in the temp directory until it is finished then it moves it to the final destination. You can see this especially when you download large files 100+ MB. Kazaa uses the .dat files as the "temp" file until it finishes the download then it renames the .dat to the actual file name.

On the participation level I have a 1....is there a way toget higher or is there just 0 and 1?

The highest ranking is 1000... But I can tell you that after getting at that rating, it's not faster. The best rating would be between 200 and 400 (again speaking from experience, no scientific stuff here). But for let's say 5 files downloaded at 1000 of rating, I never got speed more than 2-3 kb/sec... And at 250, I always download at top speeds. Ok... Maybe I was unlucky with my 1000 rating, but the fact that it comes back often makes me think the system doesn't like supreme beings (rank name for a 1000 rating... :mischief: )

No, that´s not what I wrote. I meant that both IE and KaZaa are able to access their respective temp files. KaZaa is based on the IE implementation in Windows, thus this is possible.
So any IE based browser or application can be able to access the DAT files KaZaa uses. :yeah:

Concerning the ranking, of course you have to see that a person uploading the file you want may also just have a modem or something slightly faster.
The 2 or more persons bandwidth that take part in a file transfer is the first reason for the final speed, only then the number of interested people and their respective rating is flowing into the calculation.
:D

Ah, I am up to 69 now. :) You know, I never aw any problem with being a 0. I always seemed to be able to download big files in a few days....let's see how this works out for me.

But you gotta share, right? But either you share or you simply don't, no? Anyway, what's this "My Participation Level"? It's definitely something new, because I've never seen it before, i.e. pre-newest version. Don't suppose Lite makes a difference in anything, it logs on to the same network etc.

The Participation Level is this ranking we have been talking about. For everything you download, the score decreases, everything you upload increases the ranking.
:D

Great. Communists. :p

If you have the right tools, you don't have to share... :mischief:

Perfect. You know what I want to hear... :D :)

Well, I tried out Lucky's advice in his first post. I now have a rating of 534 and my DL speeds are amazing. The bad thing is, if you take a few days off, or turn off your computer, your rating drops quite a bit.

I never used Kazaa and will never I think. There are so many better choices.

you're right why waste time with kazaa when there's a emule which is by far better

Bah DC++ all the way. ;)

Okay, I am now up to 1000......I wish I could get the program to stop sharing with 0s.

I'm not sharing, and I'm at 1000 participation level ;)

Plus I have no spyware that actual Kazaa gives you :-D

What you using, Jertain, Kazaa Lite? That is what I am using.
