...or do you take your chances and go with random? I prefer Pangea.

PS-Did I spell Pangea wrong?

In order of preference: Pagea, Continents, Archipelago. My reasoning: I like the diplomatic environment of pangea... generally you're going to have contact with everyone much earlier. Wars/fighting/trading happen sooner, and more often (IMO). Secondly, I'm not a huge fan of naval operations. In fact, I rarely build any boats beyond 3 or 4 Curraghs/Galleys. Finally, and especially with Archipelago, corruption can be a real bugger. It almost requires a communist gov't. I do, however, plan on tackling an archipelago map one of these days.

I usually play Archipelago with lots of water. I love exploring the little islands and sending settlers out all over the place. Pangaea is my least favorite since I'm just not an early warmonger. I do hate to get stomped before the AA is over.

I love playing on archipelagos, partly because it makes naval power (and also air power to some extent) that much more important, but mainly because I like developing in relative isolation - I'd rather be on a fairly small island with only 1-3 other civs with me.

It depends on what level I"m playing, warlord to monarch "Pangua", Emporer and Demigod Continents and Deity\Sid Archipelago (although I did win a couple of Deity games with continents. :)

I did not play much but prefer Continents, gives me the chance to conquest a full continent to me keeping other opponents unharmed in the other continent (and thus bringing balance to The Force! :p )

If I played a lot I guess I would be selecting Random, so to master all kinds of them.

I picked Achipelago but definitely Continents feel very real - global. Archipelago feels more provincial - like we're all playing in one little corner of the world. Reason I like more water is that I love amphibious landings! I just wish the AI were better at it. To have a stack of AI land on my continent, establish a foothold and plant an airport would excite me to no end! Never happens. They land 1 or 2 units at a time and NEVER use airports to the exploit potential that most human players do.

here i am late in the game clicking the map 200 times a turn to move my units when im at war. well at least they get to use the railroads and move all the way to the edge of my empire in one mouseclick. but with archipelago they have to move to the ships which slooowly move across the map and drop them off in danger of being sunk. yuck. yeah airports help. but i guess i prefer pangea.

i do like naval wars though.

Archipelago...i just like to use navy and aircraft :) also helicopters become useful in archipelago maps

Random is definitely the way to go--in 4000 BC the world is truly unknown. That's kind of the whole point behind exploring.

Here's something unexpected: I'm finding out I have a preference for 3 million year maps! The map generator then produces a world with genuine mountain ranges across whole continents. Gives the world a realistic feel, and also introduces some extra strategic considerations (think defensive perimeter).

I prefer pangea on the lower levels (regent and below) because the techrace is a bit faster. On higher levels I prefer continents or even archipelago when playing on Emperor and above because it slows down the techrace.

I love pangea, I like monstrous nations. Continents are fun if I can get an East v. West continent war going. Archipelagos i hate. I dislike naval exploration.

(NOTE: THis is not spelling police, he was asking for the right spelling)
it's Pangaea.

I prefer archipelago caus I capitilaize as Carthage. :D
