I can't add a poll to my other thread, sorry.

EDIT: Next game is PR girl Cathy, UN diplo win.

I'm also away for 2 weeks over Christmas so vote whether I should start before then or not.

The game will have same settings as before, normal speed, standard size, barbs on, random opponents.

EDIT2: I voted I love Cathy so as not to bias the votes ;)

Big/Small at monarch and before christmas.

Oh, and I love Cathy (and courthouses)

I dislike B&S a lot more than other players. Must be the need for island hopping without a true need for naval power.

I like spamming games so of course before xmas and possibly in the next 2 hours.

Monarch or Emp is your choice as far as I care.

And the Civ IV version of Cathy is greatness. Screw realism, I want my leaders HOT.

Uhm the leading options (which I ofc voted for) are:
Start before xmas
and
:love:Cathy

Other than that I voted for Emperor level, Chuck Norris, B&S, Continents, Fractal, M&S.

I've finished the write up of my game now. I'm going to try and win at Immortal for the latest HOF gauntlet for the next week probably, so I'm not going to start round 3 - PR Girl Cathy for a bit.

Well, just been battered by barbs on Immortal.

Everyone seems to want me to start before Xmas so I'd better start soon I think.

Last game was Fractal, are you sure that's what you want again?

I've only won 3 times on Emperor you know, but last game was a HOF win at my first attempt so I'm not too bad. That was Epic speed though, and this is definitely going to be a normal speed game.

I don't mind trying Emperor in public though because (a) good advice is always forthcoming and (b) I think the monarch game wasn't very hard, so Emp would be a better challenge.

I just like playing games with barbs in, that's why I suggested the barb HOF gauntlet (maj39)!

I understand that they can make the game more viable/exciting early on, but a couple things about barbs really piss me off:

1. Animals killing military, particularly units used to scout (or escort! I actually lost an archer to a bear a couple times...), can change an entire game on 1 bad-luck odds loss (that isn't even that unlikely).

2. Like virtually everything else, they don't scale well with speed. Barbs are a laughingstock on quick, and pretty rough on marathon. In forced slow speed games at high levels such as g major 40, they make less sense.

3. They're kind of artificial difficulty, but their impact as such is completely arbitrary. Playing a high difficulty in isolation or a lot of nearby land can really hurt with them on, while if you get a close spawn you can ignore them with just warrior fogbusting. Meanwhile, the AI just stomps them flat with archers and forgets about it.

4. Mixing them with random events is flagrant stupidity. (I turn random events off at all costs though, typically). This decision came after still getting an archer uprising at 2950 BC in 3.17. Huge map too, so six archers. Care to try to whip enough garrison to stop 6 archers in 2950, especially on epic? Trick question! You don't have bronze yet! Insta loss. It's a joke that default settings allow this.

5. A lot of top HoF players disable them ----> depends on the goal of competition vs fun and what you prefer.

6. In my case, they create a lot of annoying and unnecessary micro...often repeatedly blocking them until their extremely variable on a turn by turn basis attack courage makes them strike my unit.

7. Again based on chance, spears and axes can hurt if you lack metal! If you have metal they're easy!

8. There is no time the RNG can screw you like in the early game. In 15+ troop wars, the odds of losing to a bad RNG roll go way, way down. When your 1-2 fogbust units die at 90% odds and you lose tiles, it's not all that unlikely, given the number of times those 90% odds are going to be placed on a single unit. Again, this is extremely obnoxious if you can't field a unit that can actually ATTACK the barb, and it ignores your fogbust on RNG rolls. Does it happen every game? Not even close. Can it ruin or at least damage an otherwise good one that was played optimally by the player? Absolutely.

How do you feel about goody huts? I kinda wish their was a 'no techs from goody huts, but everything else is alright (minus stuff that you don't get for difficulty)' option.

I'm not sure on them yet. Recent discussion on them has me wondering why I didn't notice their effects . Of course, part of that is I only recently moved to immortal, so I've not been at a difficulty where they'd *for sure* give the AI more benefit until recently.

My gut feeling after thinking about it is that they don't distort the game as much as barbs though (but I may play with them off). Keep in mind, too, that I frequently play with barbs on...just not in HoF ;). It's random events I absolutely, positively can't stand . Part of that is because of reason #4...but that's not the only event that can really hurt. My personal favorite is chained forest-fire events really early in the game where you don't have money, accruing 2 or in one instance 3 whip anger arbitrarily, while you still only have one city.

I'm pretty sure I broke a mirror or somebody hexed me when it comes to random events though...they seem to bother other people a lot less. I lose 2-3 forges sometimes, or have 3 mining accidents in the BCs on my copper. Unlike barbs, which one can at least plan for (they're semi-consistent in spawn rate and power given a difficulty), random events force you to either 1) play suboptimally in anticipation of an event that never comes or 2) risk taking considerable early or mid game damage from them.

I've already hijacked this thread like 12509872340987 times too much though.

Paradigm, I apologize. Obviously your games, both here and in HoF, can be played in any way you deem best for yourself (well, provided it's within the rules in HoF, that is ;) ). I'll take my complaints elsewhere now.

You definitely need to love Cathy. Cathy can never get enough love or treaties in pockets. I personally feel you could wreck @ emperor, you're a solid player (unless there's enough alcohol involved perhaps ), but that's your choice too. Sometimes it's more fun to be on drunken binges!

As for barbs, high level barbs are much more dangerous. I tried that deity Mao game by ABCF and ugh. Learned a thing or two. Snaaty's guide about getting archery early after either bronze or AH (but not both) really helps. If you move to emp you may want to keep that in mind, although again since you're playing normal it should feel much, much easier even at emperor than G major 40 did.

I don't mind the rants or derailing of the thread ;)

Looks like it will be Emperor, Fractal then. I'll do a start tonight before having another go at GMaj40.

Barbs I can handle normally, I even had a city razed in GMaj39 (raging barbs) but still got an OK (mid-table) time in.

I also beat a barb uprising in GMaj38 (Gilgamesh, space, emperor) by some handy whipping of axes (I think they were barb swordsmen, only 3 I think though).

So barbs on, huts on, events on guys.

I did turn off huts and barbs for my 1 attempt at a deity major (well, it was more like 30 attempts ;))

EDIT: I want to see if I can be competitive at normal speed on emperor anyway. The only normal speed win was my first emperor win, warlords expansion, small continents dominatin, but that was with praets so it doesn't really count ;)

Long wars get really painful...make sure you're ready if you declare on someone.

I've found that for non-war games, the faster speeds are easier to win actually, although you won't get a finish date record!

Probably one of the game's greater challenges is high level war on quick, but even that's doable if you prep right and hit really, really hard.

Yes, I probably wont attempt an early rush in the UN game if I can REX peacefully.

Ideal situation is me and 2 AIs on a landmass early on, REX and get a buddy, then repeated short wars against the bad guy to get lots of shared war bonuses.

I'll try not to build the pyramids in this game, people might think my whole strategy relies on them ;)

Again it will be a key wonders only game I think.

What are people's opinion of the Great Lib in a diplo game? The scientists are nice but you really need to go sci meth ASAP to build the UN unlike say a space game where you can get assembly line etc. before going sci meth.

The game is afoot! So no use voting anymore chaps and chapesses.

Emperor, Fractal won.

If you were on of the 17 who voted who didn't also vote "I love Cathy", shame on you ;)
