Is there any point to them? They have crap attack and Defence air dropping them is pretty cool. But in the end they just get killed because they are too weak

They look cool? The only use I have ever found for them is as a throw-away unit dropped on a mountain in enemy territory. They are so weak, the AI will generally attack them, which keeps those units from attacking a unit with actual value. In my war-gaming days, we used to call this kind of thing a "soak-off".

Soak-offs were useless then, and they still are. I never built paratroops unless I'm running away with a game and I just want to watch them deploy.

So, to answer your question in a word: no.

they're cool, and their always nice when either

A-attacking a REALLY far behind AI, and you're paratroopers for some reason have an advantage on the defending AI
B-the AI has a large military, and you're trying to distract their army from getting to the front line, so you paradrop lines of paratroopers and use them to block the front lines and basically act as scape goats so the AI doesn't attack your advancing army

in my mods, i make them stronger, so they have an actual point. i can block 'choke-points' with them. when the AIs use them, it gets pretty annoying:backstab:

I thnk the only thing I've used Paras for is emergency defenders until I can get more there. The airdrop range is pitiful, but sometimes it works out.

I'd rather load a defender up into a helo and rebase it.

They can be useful. They also have recon mission capability as well, so that frees up a fighter/bomber to bomb instead of wasting the move on recon.

I've also modded them to be able to carry tracked units, and that makes them more useful.

I find Paratoopers and Helicopters fall into the "filler units" catergory. They have a signifcant place in history, so they made it into the game. But, and I think Firaxis relized this, they're literraly there just for show, not for actual use. I made a copy of my Civ files (b/c I'm a dedicated vanilla player still to this day) and modded Helicopters to carry 8 units so they're like a flying transport, which made them a tad more useful. And I increased the paratroopers drop range (equal to Bombers) and increased their attack equal to that of a Marine, so they have more of a place.

Argetnyx is right.... unless you modded alot of other things (like costs, etc...) then I'd say 8 units is a bit unrealistic....

I did, Heli's cost the same amount as ICBM to build ^^

One thing I haven't seen anyone say so far...

I have vanilla with no mods, so this might be pointless for some of you all, but I will save any infantry that manages "elite" status and make sure not to upgrade them to mech infantry (since usually I get helos and mech around the same time). I then use the elite infantry on helicopter airdrop missions in enemy territory as a screen before attacking. If you get a half-dozen or so infantry on a mountain within enemy territory, especially one a few squares from roads/rails, the AI will attack it with everything it has and usually lose a lot of units in doing so.

You can do the same thing with cavalry if you want to ruin the countryside or destroy resources/luxuries. Plus, I was always tickled at the idea of a helicopter dropping off a bunch of guys with guns on horses. CHEEEEAAAARRRRGGGE! *plays bugle*

No, the Bradley (which is what the MechInf is depicted by in the game) is a glorified troop transport. It has a light machine gun and maybe rockets. But they do carry a whopping six troops each to rapidly deliver them to the battlefield.

There's a pretty funny movie that shows the development of the Bradley. The name escapes me, but Cary Elwes was in it. Kelsey Grammer as well.

well, the bradley fighting vehicle doesn't just let its troopers out when, say, a main battle tank shows up. It can do a pretty good job against light armor and personnel with it's 20mm cannon and I'm pretty sure most of them now are fitted with TOW missiles or whatever they're using now... hellfires? javelins? I dunno.

Personally, I wish they had an advanced mech infantry unit after robotics or the first future tech that was like a mech suit... basically just up the attack value some and make movement equal over all terrain (like an explorer). hint hint to people who can make that sort of thing :goodjob:
