Can you start new 1.52 games and load them? Could be an issue with save games from earlier patches being incompatible.

I receive this same error when starting a new game. This is from a clean install of the game, and update to 1.52.

Before, the game on a base-install could play until around 1000AD then it would crash. Update 1.09 didn't help much. Harkonnen's hack worked fantastically, and I could finish games with it. In short, 1.52 has made the game unplayable for me.

Man, civ is so weird. I restarted my computer after i got that error, and it works fine. really strange.

I have no idea what was causing it, but obviously a restart was enough to fix it. hope u guys have some luck too!

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem as you. I installed the patch 1.52. After that I get the crash with the message:
"Your system has run out of video memory. Please trying reducing your video setting.".

Sadly a restart of my system doesn't work. Civ4 is really strange, but I love to play it now, so pleassssse help me!

Thanks,
Sebastian

I have the same exact problem as above. The game ran perfectly until I downloaded the new patch at which point i recieved the same error box asking me to reduce my video settings. I went to the options tab in the game and reduced my video settings, but no luck. Then, I updated my nVidia drivers, reinstalled both game and patch, and still no luck. Hopefully someone has an answer??

I think they pulled the patch. It popped up for me to download but the file size was -1 bytes so it wouldn't download.

The patch from here was bad not the one you downloaded from in game.

Besides if you get an error saying you ran out of video memory it means you ran out of video memory.

How much video ram do you have?

post some specs instead of spec ulating.)

I have minimum system requirements and it worked before, so i can't quite see how the hardware would have anything to do with it, but anyway:

Pentium4 2GHz
512 Mb of RDRAM
nVidia GeForce4 Ti w/64mb of memory
Windows XP SP2

I was playin around earlier and it ran...once..., but then i exitted and tried to reopen but I got the same message.....again.

dxdiag please

shows your vid card specs more clearly.

The patch changed memory management. It forced memory into video ram where it did not do that before.

Sigh....I could play the game (before 1.52) into the 1800-1900's before it would crash EVERY time.

Now it gives me the same FATAL_ERROR message as above anytime I try to begin a saved or new game so I can't play at all.

BUT, I also have another errror (I'm sorry I can't post a picture as it's on another computer):

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: ...Civilization 4.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

Computer stats:
P4 3.06 GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 (128 MB)
768 MB RAM
Win XP SP2

I know, I know....I should know better than to think I could fix anything! I wanted to let everyone know that I tried turning on the "Memsav" function in the config file, (It's not "MemorySaver" like it says in the readme file) to fix this problem, unfortunately it did not change the problem in any way.

ok two things.
1) increase the page file size on your computer to 1500 initial 1500 max.
In the control panel click on: system/advanced/performance/settings/advanced/virtual memory/change
use custom settings. 1500/1500.

2)Your card is kinda old and using the newest drivers would not be so good.

In order to load the driver right turn off everything in the background.

start/run

type in

msconfig

Under startup tap disable all

under services tab check the box marked hide all ms services. Make sure that is checked or bad things could happen. After you have verified that ms services are hidden, disable all apply and reboot.

Download this nvidia driver. 44.03

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_44.03.html

follow the driver hints to clear the present driver then install this one.

I get this very same error message after playing the game maybe 20-30mins. I have a 256mb NVidia GeForce 7800GTX. As soon as I installed the game I downloaded the new patch v152 before playing. The game plays flawlessly, no problems with all settings high; wonder movies play perfectly etc. Just this strange Crash which started as a complete freeze without going to desktop. Now I get a CTD with the above error. and something about a runtime error. The only thing I've done to rectify this is to update drivers to the latest (mine was 77.77 or something) but to no avail.
I'm running a Athlon64 4000+, 2G RAM, MSI Neo4 Platinum motherboard. DirectX diagnostics came up with no problems all round.

AUGHH everything was great before huge mapes and high graphics and now nothing.....no virtual memory huh? Before it worked fine and now when I put on the patch that is suppose to make room for your virtual memory....it crashes \
I tell you... computers and this game is like a woman when she's P.M.S.ING
You turn her on and God knows whats going to happen

I had this exact problem but I got past it, just for reference all my specs are ok except my 32mb geForce 4 440 video card.

Here are a couple things I did that helped me out:

1. Update video card drivers (right click desktop - properties - settings - advanced - adapter -properties - driver - update driver)

2. Increase Virtual Memory minimum and maximum (my computer - properties - advanced - performace [settings] - advanced - change virtual memory)

on Windows XP.

along with the v 1.52 patch these quick fixes solved my "black terrain" problem many others have had.

hope this helps someone....

I'm getting this error too with the new patch. I've tried the things suggested in this thread with no luck. The game worked perfectly before.

I have a Radeon 9600 Mobility with 128MB of video ram. Ironic this patch was supposed to be aimed at improving performance on low end systems. :-(

You folks need to delete the game cache. I was having this same problem after installing v1.52. If you had the Harkonnen patch installed on v1.09 the dll's from it will need to go too. Might be wise to just do a fresh install and make sure to delete the stuff in mydocuments/mygames/civ4 as well as anything lingering in the programfiles/firaxis folder. Note: uninstalling does not clear out everything nor the game cache.
