I downloaded and bought civ4 from gamestop.com recently. I can play the game fine but when I try and download the latest patch from direct2drive.com I get an error message saying Failed to load:DLL:DSETUP, then the patch setup closes. I reinstalled the game and tried this again and got the same problem. I tried using the patch off of the official site and it says "This setup has detected no version of sid meir's civilization 4. This requires a previous version to be installed"

Can someone help me with this please?

This is my problem exactly. Has anyone found a fix for this?

It's pretty ridiculous when you go into Civ4 and choose "find updates", then it finds the patch and downloads it and then tells you that Civ4 isn't installed.

Since I got mine from Gamestop.com as well, I tried the D2D patch, also with no luck.

You'll have to get the patches from gamestop.com. Direct2Drive patches are only for the D2D distribution of the game.

wrong. Gamestop doesn't offer the patches, and I'm almost positive that Gamestop's digital download section is managed by D2D.

What finally worked for me was deleting the direct3d files from the system32 directory (I believe the ones you want to delete are dx9_24.dll, dx9_25.dll, and dx9_27.dll - you should probably back those files up), and reinstalling Direct X 9.0c.

Now I'm working on the .XML failure bug. Finally was able to reinstall Windows Installer, which should let me reinstall the MS XML parser, which should *hopefully* allow me to play BTS...

I can assure you, Gamestop's digital store is not managed by D2D. =)

You will have to contact their customer support and ask them nicely to make a patch.

Or you can use the D2D patch, which works. I believe that it's reinstalling Direct X is what was causing the problem. After reinstalling Direct X, I was able to apply the D2D patch with no problem.

And, my bad, it's actually Trymedia that manages Gamestop's direct download site. So, other than D2D, Trymedia would be the place to go for a patch.

No, it's not reinstalling Direct X. It's where you download it from, and how you go about getting it. What people are doing is downloading it, then just leaving it alone, hoping it would take effect. That won't work. You have to extract it to a folder that you crated. For example, I put it in "dxd", then went into dxd, then went to DXSETUP, and followed the installation process. That's how you do it, and it'll work just fine.

I'm getting the same problem, but I downloaded civ4 from gameworld. However they lack patches and said when I bought the damn download that it was the latest version, which it clearly isn't which is why I'm here.

I reinstalled DX9c, I moved the files like Barry said and I'm still getting that buggering error when I try to install the patch.

I'm really interested in what you did. Would you elaborate further? This error is driving me nuts.

I wish someone would make a tutorial with screenshots for this kind of problem, since it seems to crop up fairly often.

I've still had no luck fixing this.
