when I try to install the patch 1.74 I get an error message saying that it can't find CIV 4 installed. The installer then exits. has anyone found a fix to this problems?? (this happens on both XP and VISTA)
then it is trickier...
is Civ4 registered in the control panel? i.e. could you uninstall it from the control panel? And of course: what version of Civ4 do you have? retail, gold edition, complete, download version?
it's registered in the control panel, and I have the downloaded version - from trymedia.com I believe. so what should I do?
BTW, thanks for your help Ori.
the patches you get from here, ingame or from firaxis only work with the CD versions of the game. The digital versions require their own patch versions, I know that steam and direct2drive provide them, I fear you will have to contact trymedia for this patch
I found a patch at d2d, but when I start it up THAT patcher gives me some kind of unhandled exception error and shuts down too. I downloaded mine from gamestop, and the patch on GS's page is the one for the CD version. I wasn't able to find any other links for the dl version patch.
the problem is that all the digital versions out there differ between vendors - which makes patching them a pain since the vendor who sold it to you needs to make his own version of the patch - some do and some don't. The patches for the CD version cannot work if only for the reason that their .exe requires the CD to be in the drive to startup the game...
Ugh and I think I know what THAT means... I did shoot them an email already, so I'll keep things update on this thread as to how that pans out just for others' info.
Bought mine from Gamestop.com same problems nice to know im not the only one expirencing this lol i play WoW with no problems at all and i have the same exact problem with the 1.74 patch as everyone i just read
Ok i dont know if any1 else had this happen to them but the digital patch from Direct2drive.com (For everyone who bought their game digitally) for me is trying to un-install my game O_O!
I should add, trymedia did also contact me a week ago or so, and gave me the link to their 1.74 patch. it installed good on my Vista machine, but left the XP machines searching for a dll. I just copied the dll file to the XP machine and no problem since. so yeah - a shout out to trymedia's customer service.
I got the patch installed, but unfortunately, Beyond the Sword won't install. It complains that the patch failed to install. Makes no sense since when I go into Civ IV, it plainly says version 1.74. I've sent another e-mail to TryMedia, but if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
I am having the same problem i think. I bought the original from a download. Never had any problems. I bought Beyond the Sword from a retailer. Said i needed a new patch. I updated to 1.74 (ithink that is the exact number) and then restarted my comp and tried to install BtS again. The same thing happened.
On the install shield screen it says its going to update to a new version, then an error message comes up and says "the patch failed to install! Aborting installation."
I started Civ4 again, to double check and it says its the 1.74 version.
If any of you guys can help i would really appreciate it.
Welcome to Civfanatics
unfortunately this might prove to be unsolvable - I know that the steam Vanilla install will not allow you to install BtS retail - while the other way round its well possible. I am pretty sure that this is because the BtS installer does not know that there are such things as digital versions of Civ4 out there. You might want to take this up with Take2 directly - since they sold you the game...
Ori,
Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the quick response. I really appreciate it. I just submitted Take2 a question. I am not really into a lot of pc games, but really enjoy Civ4. I cant understand why this is so complicated.
I was too having problems with the patch 1.74. I purchased the game through Gamestop.com also. I followed the link below and the patch installed for me perfectly.
I had the same problem installing BtS. I found the patch from trymedia and was able to install it, but BtS didn't recognize that the patch was installed.
But I figured it out. The problem is the patch is put into the registry as 1.74.0000, but the BtS installer is looking for 1.74 only. Add the following keys to the Registry and BtS will install.
